LEDs offer many benefits over conventional light sources for plant photobiology research, including long lifespan, controllable light beam and intensity, and multiple spectral emission options. However, changes in spectral properties might lead to misinterpreted data. Proper and regular light measurements are recommended, especially in thermal stress environments.

The spectral properties of conventional lighting systems vary during warm up, when dimmed, and over time. LED spectral properties are impacted by their junction temperature, and the degree of spectral shifting varies depending on LED color. External environment factors such as ambient temperature and humidity can affect LED performance.
