To contribute to the state-of-the-art of the wideband SIR filters by discussing in detail a filter structure that uses simultaneously capacitive and inductive coupling irises to enhance the out-of-band response.

The article validates the design procedure of a wideband waveguide filter structure with very good out-of-band response through several designs, comparisons between simulations and measurements, and a detailed tolerance analysis. A folded E-plane hybrid SIR filter is shown to exhibit the best overall performance.

The filters designed are very sensitive to manufacturing errors, with acceptable in-band response only achievable with manufacturing errors below ±25 μm.
