Investigating the effect of photonic crystals on the light extraction efficiency of GaN-based LED for different polarization modes of spontaneous radiation.

The LEE of different polarization modes have been simulated using FDTD for three photonic crystal structures. The TE-mode and TM-mode LEE will reduce when the discontinuity of the structure from the propagation direction changes. Both TE and TM mode enhances in cylindrical-PhC LED, but TE-mode LEE is always larger than that of TM mode. LEE of TM mode surpasses TE mode from 530 nm to 540 nm in compound-PhC LED. Based on this, a multi-layer-compound-PhC-LED is proposed, in which TM-mode LEE is increased by 1.45 times at a wavelength of 532 nm, and the TM-mode illuminous intensity will be larger than that of TE mode. We can change the domination of TE and TM mode by using photonic crystal without changing the energy band.
