PoE lighting is the most efficient and cost effective way of power and data transfer on the same low-voltage cable infrastructure; conventional networked lighting systems require a multi-layered infrastructure; one to power and another to communicate. Innovation in product development and implementation of more efficient standards, will make PoE a key component of building services, and companies that create enabling technology for this new technology will drive the LED lighting industry through this change.

Networked lighting systems are difficult to design and commission. The commissioning process needs to be standardized and simplified for boosting adoption significantly. Software required to manage a PoE powered lighting system must be affordable, simple and user friendly. Currently most of the PoE systems are based on proprietary systems, there is a need for open standards and inter-operable systems that can simplify integration with the remaining building services network.
