The study provides fundamental understanding of the operation of ECL-based light-emitting device platforms and practical guidelines for advancing device performance. The results show that the luminance of the device initially increases with increasing operational frequency but eventually rolls off at higher frequencies due to the decreased rate of the electrode reactions.

1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
A model based on the diffusion and reaction rate equations is developed to predict the operational frequency (f)-dependent luminance properties of the ECLD.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
An ECL active model solution comprising a benchmark ionic transition metal complex (iTMC) ECL luminophore (tris(2,2’-bipyridine)ruthenium (II) hexafluorophosphate (Ru(bpy)3[PF6]2)) and an ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([BMIM][TFSI])).
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
Cyclic voltammetry analysis, linear sweep voltammetry performed with an ultra-micro electrode (UME), and a homemade voltage-luminance (V-L) measurement system.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
The dynamic process occurring during the operation of the ECLD was modeled by considering three types of reactions involving the luminophores (i.e., charge injection, excitation, and emission) and their diffusion near the electrode.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
The model was numerically solved using the reaction and diffusion constants obtained from separate electrochemical analysis techniques.
