UTUC detection is feasible with UroVysion? FISH in one mL of passively collected upper tract urine, suggesting its potential use as an outpatient triage test to reduce the number of follow-up ureteroscopies after kidney-sparing surgery of UTUC. Further studies are needed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of FISH for this pathway.

The influence of concomitant urothelial carcinoma of the bladder on FISH results and cytology findings remains to be investigated. The study did not assess inter-observer variability of FISH interpretations or explore new interpretation methods for urine cytology.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
A case-control study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of UroVysion? FISH in detecting UTUC in 1 mL of selective urine. The study included ten patients with biopsy-proven UTUC and five patients with negative diagnostic ureteroscopy findings.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
Selective urine samples were collected passively via a ureteral splint during ureteroscopy under general anesthesia.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
UroVysion? FISH bladder cancer assay, Olympus V2 or Karl Storz Flex XC ureteroscopes, Piranha? forceps or French Zero-tip baskets for biopsies, and a fluorescence microscope (Leica DM 5500B) for FISH enumeration.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Urine samples were collected, fixed with Carbowax, and processed into cytospins within 24 hours. FISH was performed according to the manufacturer’s protocol, and slides were analyzed by a blinded observer.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
FISH results were compared with selective urine cytology findings and the patients’ UTUC status to assess sensitivity and specificity.
