研究目的
To analyze theoretically the one-dimensional photonic crystals (1DPCs) with both permittivity and permeability varying periodically along the same direction using the coupled-mode theory, and to derive approximate band edge frequencies, center frequencies, and bandgaps for axial propagation.

The coupled-mode equation and the dispersion equation for the Bloch wavenumbers vs. the angular frequency was derived. The approximate bandedge and center frequencies, and bandgaps are derived using the wave equation for the electric and the magnetic fields to derive the results for two alternative approximations. A comparison with the rigorous results showed that one of the alternative forms can be more suitable in a given situation.

The study is theoretical and relies on approximations which may not capture all nuances of the physical system. The accuracy of the results decreases as the order of the bandgap increases.
