Investigating the effectiveness and limitations of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma (BCC).

Topical PDT is an effective treatment for low-risk BCC, with excellent cosmesis and safety. Excisional surgery resulted in highest efficacy; however, PDT had superior cosmesis. PDT is a welcome addition to the photon-based treatment modalities available to dermatologists.
研究不足
PDT needs to be performed in centres with appropriately trained nonphysician healthcare professionals. Intense pain during treatment can occur in some patients. The need for purchasing a PDT light source and the sporadic use of such equipment limit the widespread availability of PDT in dermatology practice.
