To develop selective and sensitive fluorescence recognition of Pb(II) in aqueous medium by organic nanoparticles of a urea linker based tetrapodal receptor and to study the effect of linker molecules in a sensor on chemosensing.

P-ONPs showed selective chemosensing of Pb(II) with a limit of detection as 1.56 μM via PET-OFF mechanism, while R-ONPs did not recognize any metal ion. The study reveals the application of a tetrapodal ligand having urea receptor as a selective chemosensor for Pb(II) in an aqueous medium.

The study is limited to the recognition behavior of P-ONPs and R-ONPs towards Pb(II) and other metal ions in aqueous medium. The effect of other environmental factors and the practical applicability in real samples were not extensively explored.

Synthesis of tetrapodal receptors P and R, preparation of their organic nanoparticles (ONPs) by re-precipitation method, and investigation of their recognition behavior towards various metal ions via fluorescence emission spectroscopy.
