Pd NCs were successfully coated with a flexible 2D MOF (CID-5) for the first time by controlling crystal formation speed and chemical environment. The hybrid material retains the gate-opening behavior for CO2 sorption and hydrogen absorption capabilities of Pd, indicating compatibility and potential for multifunctional applications. Future work should focus on exploiting structural changes of 2D MOFs with MNC functionalities.

The method may be specific to CID-5 and Pd NCs; applicability to other 2D MOFs or metal NCs is not explored. Impurities can form if synthesis conditions are not optimized, and the mechanism relies on rapid crystal formation, which might not be generalizable.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The study aimed to synthesize Pd NCs coated with CID-5 MOF using solvothermal methods, with modifications to accelerate crystal formation. Methods included PXRD, TEM, HAADF-STEM, EDX mapping, CO2 sorption isotherms, and hydrogen PC isotherms for characterization.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
Pd NCs were synthesized by reducing Na2PdCl4 with L-ascorbic acid in the presence of PVP. CID-5 MOF was synthesized using Zn(NO3)2·6H2O, H2NO2-ip or Na2NO2-ip, and bpy in DMF/MeOH solvent.

Equipment included transmission electron microscope (TEM), high-angle annular dark-field scanning TEM (HAADF-STEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), and gas sorption analyzers. Materials included Na2PdCl4, L-ascorbic acid, poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), Zn(NO3)2·6H2O, H2NO2-ip, Na2NO2-ip, bpy, DMF, MeOH, and a syringe pump.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Pd NCs were prepared in aqueous solution, then mixed with MOF precursors under heating and stirring. For successful coating, metal and ligand solutions were delivered simultaneously using a syringe pump into preheated Pd NC solution. Control experiments varied the order of solution addition. Samples were characterized using PXRD, TEM, STEM-EDX, CO2 sorption at 195 K, and hydrogen PC isotherms at 303 K.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
Data were analyzed to confirm composite formation, measure particle sizes, map elemental distributions, and quantify gas uptake capacities using standard techniques and software for diffraction and spectroscopy.
