研究目的
To study the outcomes of intravitreal injection of Bevacizumab and laser photocoagulation in the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME).
研究成果
Both intravitreal bevacizumab and macular photocoagulation significantly improve best-corrected visual acuity in diabetic macular edema patients at 6 months, with similar final outcomes. Bevacizumab shows earlier improvement at 1 and 3 months. Long-term studies are recommended to evaluate sustainability of benefits.
研究不足
The study had a small sample size, which may limit the ability to detect significant differences between groups. It was a short-term study (6 months), and a long-term follow-up is needed to assess sustained effects. The choice of treatment was not fully randomized, as patients could opt and those with certain conditions were assigned to laser group, potentially introducing bias.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
A quasi-experimental study design was used, comparing two treatment groups for diabetic macular edema. Patients were randomly selected, with choice given to patients for opting any treatment, but those with cardiac or cerebro-vascular problems were placed in the laser group. Non-probability purposive sampling was employed.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
72 eyes of 59 patients with Type-2 Diabetes mellitus, ≥35 years, having macular edema >250μ confirmed by retinal OCT. Fundus Florescence Angiography was done to identify foveal avascular zone and rule out macular ischemia.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
Bevacizumab (Genentech) for injections, Pascal double frequency YAG laser for photocoagulation, slit lamp, 90D Volk lens, 3D OCT-2000 FA plus for retinal OCT, topical moxifloxacin
4:5% eye drops. Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Group-A received three intravitreal injections of bevacizumab (
5:25 mg/05 ml) at monthly intervals via inferior-temporal pars plana. Group-B received modified grid laser photocoagulation with specific spot sizes and spacing. Follow-ups at 1, 2, 3, and 6 months with BCVA recordings. Data Analysis Methods:
Data analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Continuous variables presented as mean ± standard deviation, categorical as frequencies and percentages. Paired sample t-test used for significance (p≤0.05).
