研究目的
To determine the normal values for peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer thickness measured by spectral domain optical coherence tomography in a healthy Nepalese population and to compare the RNFL thicknesses between the genders and among the various age groups.
研究成果
The study provides normative data for RNFL thickness in healthy Nepalese eyes using SD-OCT, showing an average thickness of 102.64 ± 9.56 μm. Gender and age variations were significant, with females having thicker RNFL and thickness decreasing by 2.26 μm per decade. These findings can aid in glaucoma diagnosis in the Nepalese population, highlighting racial differences compared to Western populations.
研究不足
Hospital-based study with small sample size may not reflect the entire population. Excluded high refractive errors (> ±5 D), so could not compare with significantly long or short axial lengths. Did not measure central corneal thickness (CCT) for comparison with RNFL thickness. Cross-sectional design; longitudinal study needed to confirm age-related decay.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
Observational, cross-sectional, hospital-based study design. Used spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) for imaging and measuring RNFL thickness. Statistical analysis performed with SPSS 17.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
0.
2. Sample Selection and Data Sources: 156 healthy Nepalese subjects (66 males, 88 females) aged 14 to 76 years recruited from the general out-patient department. Inclusion criteria: normal ophthalmic examination, IOP < 21 mm Hg, normal automated perimetry, cup-disc ratio <
3:4, no retinal pathology. Exclusion criteria:
history of intraocular surgery (except cataract), high refractive error > ±5 D, active retinopathy, maculopathy, ARMD, other retinal diseases.
4:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
SD-OCT (Spectralis HRA+OCT, Heidelberg Engineering), slit-lamp biomicroscope, +90 D lens (Volk), +20 D lens (Volk), Goldmann applanation tonometer, automated perimetry (Octopus 301, Haag-Streit), gonioscopy lens.
5:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Complete ophthalmic examination including refraction, BCVA, anterior segment evaluation, fundus evaluation, IOP measurement, perimetry. RNFL imaging with SD-OCT using 16 averaged circular B-scans (3.4 mm diameter) centered at the optic disc. Scans performed by a single user, best image quality selected.
6:4 mm diameter) centered at the optic disc. Scans performed by a single user, best image quality selected.
Data Analysis Methods:
5. Data Analysis Methods: Descriptive statistics (mean, SD), regression analysis with age as variable, Pearson correlation for age, Spearman correlation for gender, unpaired t-test for gender comparisons, linear models with scatter plots.
