    摘要: We present a glove-integrated slotted patch antenna for a wearable Ultra High Frequency Radio Identification Technology (UHF RFID) reader operating at 866 MHz. We tested the prototype antenna made of copper foil adhered on low-permittivity Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) foam material having the thickness of 4 mm. To characterize the antenna, we tested it wirelessly in communication with a common dipole type RFID tag to estimate its realized gain, radiation pattern and maximum tag read range it provides. We also analyzed the effects of variable separation between the antenna and the body to confirm stable operation required by the application. The results showed that the antenna feasible for the work glove applications providing the read range up to 360 cm with the reader’s output power of 28.4 dBm.

  • Octadecyltrichlorosilane Capped Au Nanodot Arrays as Hydrophobic Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrate for Biomedical Applications

    摘要: Plasmonic nanostructures provide as a highly active-SERS substrate that can potentially achieve biomolecules detection. However, the detection of highly diluted, small volume analyte detection remains an urgent problem, due to the diffuse over the hydrophilic surfaces, which far from the plasmonic sensitive areas and limits the SERS detection sensitivity. In this study, we describe the fabrication and characterization of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) capped gold nanodot (Au ND) arrays, the combination of hydrophobic surfaces and nanoplasmonics, and demonstrates their suitability as hydrophobic SERS active substrate for biomedical application. The activity of OTS capped Au ND arrays as SERS substrate was experimentally verified using Rhodamine B as an analyte. This substrate showed 3-fold signal enhancement compared to the ordinary hydrophilic Au ND arrays due to the hydrophobic condensation effect. It is expected that the OTS capped Au ND arrays can be lead to development of a highly sensitive and selective tool for biomedical applications using SERS detection.

  • A Review: Tomography Systems in Medical and Industrial Processes

    摘要: Conventional methods previously guided reading meter to monitor the process and steps must be taken to interpret the readings and what need to adjustment be implemented. With the use of the method tomography, imaging process that displays the contents of the flow in the pipe or vessel during the process of giving analysts in real time quickly. By so corrective action can be done at a fast rate. The image will be formed from the trajectory of the object or sensor plane passing through the tomographic system. Use tomography method can be adapted to the process or the materials to be monitored. This paper examines the use of tomography in medical and industrial sectors. For use in the medical field such as looking at the structure of tissue in the body, can be used to detect cancerous elements tomography method comprising the X-ray, optical coherence tomography (OCT), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and ultrasound. The industrial sector consists of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT), Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT), optical Capacitance Tomography (ECT), and Tomography Ultrasonic (UT). This paper discusses the role, the use of concepts, basic design and development impact of the results of research conducted by previous researchers.

  • Enhanced upconversion luminescence in NaYF<sub>4</sub>:Yb,Er nanoparticles by using graphitic carbon shells

    摘要: Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have drawn much attention in the past decade due to their superior physicochemical features and great potential in biomedical. However, practical applications of upconversion luminescence are often limited by its relatively low luminescence efficiency. In this paper, we designed and synthesized NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles using a hydrothermal approach, and thereafter it was coated with a thin layer of graphitic carbon to form a core/shell nanostructure via a controlled chemical vapor deposition process. It is shown that Yb and Er doped in the crystal of NaYF4 in the forms of Yb3+ and Er3+. The thickness of the graphitic carbon shell is close to 0.45 nm, and this corresponds between one and two atomic layers. The graphitic carbon shell not only leads to a significant enhancement in the emission intensity but also provide a longer luminescence decay lifetime compared to bare NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles. Our finding provides a new strategy to remarkably improve fluorescence upconversion, and opportunities for diverse applications requiring high fluorescence intense.

  • A Review of Point Feature Based Medical Image Registration

    摘要: Point features, as the basis of lines, surfaces, and bodies, are commonly used in medical image registration. To obtain an elegant spatial transformation of extracted feature points, many point set matching algorithms (PMs) have been developed to match two point sets by optimizing multifarious distance functions. There are ample reviews related to medical image registration and PMs which summarize their basic principles and main algorithms separately. However, to data, detailed summary of PMs used in medical image registration in different clinical environments has not been published. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of the existing key techniques of the PMs applied to medical image registration according to the basic principles and clinical applications. As the core technique of the PMs, geometric transformation models are elaborated in this paper, demonstrating the mechanism of point set registration. We also focus on the clinical applications of the PMs and propose a practical classification method according to their applications in different clinical surgeries. The aim of this paper is to provide a summary of point-feature-based methods used in medical image registration and to guide doctors or researchers interested in this field to choose appropriate techniques in their research.

  • Recent advances in III-Sb nanowires: from synthesis to applications

    摘要: The excellent properties of III-V semiconductors have make them intriguing candidates for next-generation electronics and optoelectronics. Their nanowire counterparts further provide interesting geometry and quantum confinement effect which benefit various applications. Among many members of all III-V semiconductors, III-antimonide nanowires have attracted significant research interest due to their narrow direct bandgap and high carrier mobility. However, due to the difficulty of nanowire fabrication, the development of III-antimonide nanowires and their corresponding applications are always a step behind the other III-V semiconductors. Until recent years, because of the advance in the understanding and the fabrication technique, electronic and optoelectronic device based on III-antimonide nanowires with novel performance have been fabricated. In this review, we will focus on the development of the synthesis of III-antimonide nanowire using different techniques and strategies for fine-tuning the crystal structure, composition as well as fabricating their corresponding heterostructures. With such development, the recent progress in the applications of III-antimonide nanowires in electronics and optoelectronics is also surveyed. All these discussion would give valuable guidelines to the design of III-antimonide nanowires for next-generation device utilizations.

  • Synthesis and spectral analysis of fluorescent probes for Ce4+ and OCl? ions based on fluorescein Schiff base with amino or hydrazine structure: Application in actual water samples and biological imaging

    摘要: Two Schiff base fluorescein probes (FDA, FDH) based on fluorescein-aldehyde and nitroaniline derivatives were synthesized. The effects of amino and hydrazine substituents in fluorescein backbones were examined via fluorescence and absorbance spectra. In the presence of Ce4+, the fluorescence of FDA was quenched due to the ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT). Hypochloric acid can react with the C=N bond, and blocking the photo induced electron transfer (PET) of FDH leads to enhancement of the fluorescence. FDA showed detection limits for Ce4+ and OCl? as low as 63 nM in concentration range of 0 – 4 μM. FDH showed detection limits for OCl? as low as 0.8 μM in concentration rang 0 – 100 μM. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane containing the probes were prepared for the real-time qualitative detection of Ce4+ and OCl? in real water samples. The probes were successfully applied to biological imaging in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and are expected to find applications in biosensing.

  • A nanomolar detection of mercury(II) ion by a chemodosimetric rhodamine-based sensor in an aqueous medium: Potential applications in real water samples and as paper strips

    摘要: A new promising rhodamine based colorimetric and fluorometric chemosensor, RDV has been designed and synthesized for specific detection of Hg2+ ion. It acts as highly selective “turn-on” fluorescent chemosensor for Hg2+ ion without interference from other competitive metal ions in aqueous acetonitrile medium. The drastic color change with addition of Hg2+, from colorless to pink, indicates RDV can acts as “naked-eye” indicator for Hg2+. The Hg2+ promoted selective hydrolysis of appended vinyl ether group in RDV followed by Hg2+ chelated complex formation with concomitant opening of spirolactam ring is the plausible sensing mechanism. The detailed absorption, fluorescence, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectrometry confirms the proposed sensing mechanism. The limit of detection (LOD) of Hg2+ by RDV is 136 nM indicating the high sensitivity towards Hg2+. The RDV shows consistent spectroscopic response in biological pH range 4-10. In addition to explore practical applicability of RDV, its paper strips have been made and used to detect Hg2+ in pure water solution up to 10 ppm level. Furthermore, the potential application of RDV for the sensing of Hg2+ in real water samples (tap water and drinking waters from different sources) were also monitored and demonstrated.

  • Progress in Dielectrophoretic Assembly of Carbon Nanotubes for Sensing Application

    摘要: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown their potential for broad applications in field effect transistor, field emission, interconnects, energy storage, biomedicine, and many others, due to their excellent electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. One requirement for many of these applications is to assemble CNTs into designated devices. As a promising nanomanipulation method, dielectrophoresis (DEP) has been widely applied to assemble CNTs in the fabrication of CNT-based nanodevices. This paper presents a brief review of the progress in CNT-based nanosensors and the application of DEP in device making. These sensors focus on the sensing of gases, temperature, bioparticles, light, pressure, stress, and strain.

  • Monitoring investigation of solar diffuse fraction in Taiwan

    摘要: Global solar radiation, which passes through the atmosphere and arrives on earth’s ground, is composed of two constituents, that is, beam and diffuse radiation. It is agreed that the beam radiation is the only effective part for use of solar energy in concentrating either photovoltaic or solar thermal energy application, which concentrates the incident sunlight to attain high performance of either electrical power or high-temperature thermal energy generation, respectively. Information of beam radiation quantity incident upon an absorbing surface is, thus, a prerequisite for the performance evaluation of concentrating optic device. However, very few data of diffuse fraction, defined as the ratio of diffuse radiation to global radiation, is available in Taiwan. A long-time monitoring investigation in the main island (Taiwan proper) and one offshore islet (Penghu) were conducted over recent years. It was found that the annually averaged diffuse fractions, calculated with the time duration from sunrise to sunset, in the east (Taitung) and west (Tainan) sides of the main island were about 0.49 and 0.53, respectively, while about 0.50 in the offshore islet (Penghu). Seasonal variations due to geographical/topographical effects on diffuse fraction are also reported and discussed. It is found that Northeast Monsoon has remarkable effects on increment of diffuse fraction in Taitung and Penghu, while insignificant effect in Tainan.
