  • Optical Characterization of the Photonic Ball as a Structurally Colored Pigment

    摘要: A photonic ball is a spherical colloidal crystal. Because it can exhibit vivid structural colors, many attempts have been made to apply it as a structurally colored pigment. However, the optical properties of the photonic ball are complicated because di?erent crystal planes can be involved in the coloration mechanism, depending on the size of the constituent colloidal particles. In this paper, we report a comparative study of photonic balls consisting of silica particles with sizes ranging from 220 to 500 nm. We ?rst analyze the re?ectance spectra acquired in a nearly backscattering geometry and con?rm that Bragg di?raction from di?erent crystal planes causes several spectral peaks. Second, the angular dependence of re?ection is experimentally characterized and theoretically analyzed with appropriate models. These analyses and a comparison with a planar colloidal crystal reveal that the spherical shape plays an essential role in the minor iridescence of photonic balls. We ?nally discuss a method to enhance color saturation by incorporating small light-absorbing particles. We also discuss the iridescence of the photonic ball under directional and ambient illumination conditions.

  • X-ray emission from layered media irradiated by an x-ray free-electron laser

    摘要: This article presents a computational study of the x-ray ?uorescence induced by the irradiation of thin layered media by intense, short x-ray pulses. The treatment is based on a numerical solution of the Helmholtz wave equation both for the pump and for the ?uorescence signal. Consistently with a possible heating of the medium during the x-ray pulse, complex refractive indices are calculated at each time step from the results of an underlying treatment of atomic physics. In the context of an important core-hole production as a result of photoionization, we discuss the peculiarities of the resulting ampli?ed ?uorescence grazing emission and of the Bragg diffraction which can be realized at some angles inside a multilayer material or even in a perfect crystal.

  • Molecularly imprinted photonic hydrogel sensor for optical detection of L-histidine

    摘要: A molecularly imprinted photonic hydrogel (MIPH) is described for the optical determination of L-histidine (L-His). The inverse opal structure of MIPH was obtained by placing silica particles (230 nm) in molecularly imprinted polymer on a glass slide. After being fully etched by hydrofluoric acid, this inverse opal structure brings about a high specific surface and plentiful binding sites for L-His. If L-His is absorbed by the modified MIPH, its average effective refraction coefficient is increased. This causes the Bragg diffraction peak to be red-shifted by about 34 nm as the concentration of L-His increases from 0 to 100 nM. Much smaller diffraction peak shifts are obtained for other amino acids. The detection limit of this method is 10 pM. The response time towards L-His is as short as 60 s. In addition, the sensor can be recovered by treatment with 0.1 M acetic acid/methanol. It was applied to the determination of L-His in drinks sample.

  • Kossel Effect in Periodic Multilayers

    摘要: The Kossel effect is the diffraction by a periodically structured medium, of the characteristic X-ray radiation emitted by the atoms of the medium. We show that multilayers designed for X-ray optics applications are convenient periodic systems to use in order to produce the Kossel effect, modulating the intensity emitted by the sample in a narrow angular range defined by the Bragg angle. We also show that excitation can be done by using photons (X-rays), electrons or protons (or charged particles), under near normal or grazing incident geometries, which makes the method relatively easy to implement. The main constraint comes from the angular resolution necessary for the detection of the emitted radiation. This leads to small solid angles of detection and long acquisition times to collect data with sufficient statistical significance. Provided this difficulty is overcome, the comparison or fit of the experimental Kossel curves, i.e., the angular distributions of the intensity of an emitted radiation of one of the element of the periodic stack, with the simulated curves enables getting information on the depth distribution of the elements throughout the multilayer. Thus the same kind of information obtained from the more widespread method of X-ray standing wave induced fluorescence used to characterize stacks of nanometer period, can be obtained using the Kossel effect.
