  • Transcriptome survey of phototransduction and clock genes in marine bivalves

    摘要: Marine animals exhibit a variety of biological rhythms, such as solar and lunar-related cycles; however, our current molecular understanding of biological rhythms in marine animals is quite limited. Identifying and understanding the expression patterns of clock genes from available transcriptomes will help elucidate biological rhythms in marine species. Here, we perform a comprehensive survey of phototransduction and circadian genes using the mantle transcriptome of the scallop Patinopecten yessoensis and compare the results with those from three other bivalves. The comparison reveals the presence of transcripts for most of the core members of the phototransduction and circadian networks seen in terrestrial model species in the four marine bivalves. Matches were found for all 37 queried genes, and the expressed transcripts from the deep sequencing data matched 8 key insect and mammalian circadian genes. This demonstrates the high level of conservation of the timekeeping mechanism from terrestrial species to marine bivalves. The results provide a valuable gene resource for studies of “marine rhythms” and also further our understanding of the diversification and evolution of rhythms in marine species.

  • Tunable LED Lighting with Five Channels of RGCWW for High Circadian and Visual Performances

    摘要: In this study, red, green, cyan, warm white and cool white (RGCWW) LEDs are individually controlled to simulate dynamic daylight. The spectral power distributions (SPDs) are measured for both the daylight and the mixed white light. The correlated color temperature (CCT), circadian action factor (CAF) curves in the daytime of the mixed white LED almost overlap to those of daylight with a small error of about 1%. The CIE chromaticity coordinates of the mixed white light are distributed along the Planckian locus with a little deviation below 0.003. Also, its color rendering index (CRI) is above 90. The RGCWW five-chip LEDs of high circadian and visual performances will benefit to synchronize circadian rhythm in closed environment during long time without daylight, combined with better mood and alertness. The simulation errors and development trend of the mixed lighting are discussed.

    摘要: A critical decision in the mammalian cell cycle is whether to pass through the restriction point (R-point) or enter the cell cycle. In this letter, we modeled the decision-making system of the mammalian cell cycle entry and the simulated circadian regulation of the R-point driven by external epithelial growth factor (EGF) patterns. Our conceptual model replicated key signaling behaviors observed experimentally, suggesting that the proposed network captured the essential system features. The model revealed the dramatic importance of the EGF dynamics on promoting cell proliferation, showed that the EGF signal duration was more important than the signal strength for driving cells past the R-point, and suggested that the loss of circadian control of the cell cycle entry could be associated with cancer development.

    摘要: Impact of artificial light at night on sleep and health of humans and other living species is discussed among scientists. This paper analyses the properties of several commercially available light sources with regards to their effects on wildlife, human sleep, and health. A novel, environmentally considerate LED light source is introduced. Further, integration of this light source into the pilot biodynamic street lighting system is described. Based on the season and time of day, a control system changes the spectral composition of the light in lighting without compromising on safety, psychological needs or energy savings.
