  • Photonic Crystal Fibres PCF for Different Sensors in Review

    摘要: In this work, we present the update results for using the PCF as a sensors application, where we have chosen a modern collection of manuscripts previously published in scientific journals in the field of optical, biological and chemical sensors. So we compared their presented results, in order to reach the best results previously published in the use PCF for optical, biological and chemical sensors.

  • Growth, optical, mechanical and thermal behavior of unidirectionally grown L-Glutaminium p-Toluenesulfonate crystal

    摘要: Organic crystal of L-Glutaminium p-Toluenesulfonate (LGPT) was grown unidirectional by Sankaranarayanan and Ramasamy (SR) method. The grown crystal belongs to monoclinic crystal system with noncentrosymmetric space group P21. High resolution XRD confirms crystalline perfection of the grown crystal. Optical transmission shows that unidirectional grown crystal has higher transmittance and the lower cut-off wavelength is 290 nm. The emission wavelength of grown crystal is 410 nm and emission region is confirmed by luminescence spectra. The laser damage threshold value of unidirectional crystal has increased by 0.3 GW/cm2. The grown LGPT crystals belong to hard material category and it confirms the normal indentation size effect. The grown LGPT crystal is thermally stable upto 165 oC and decomposition of the molecules were elucidated by using TGA and DSC. Powder second harmonic generation measurement confirms the efficiency of the grown LGPT crystal is 0.8 times that of KDP.

  • Broadband light-trapping enhancement of graphene absorptivity

    摘要: Low optical absorptivity of graphene limits the quantum efficiency of graphene-based optoelectronic devices. We demonstrate a broadband enhancement of absorptivity in an architecture of graphene intercalation inside a simple-cubic woodpile photonic crystal. Significant light-trapping effect is achieved due to spectrally broad and dense resonances in the architecture, especially modes propagating nearly parallel to the interface between the photonic crystal and the background material. We demonstrate an overall absorptivity ~10 to 17 times larger than the free-standing bare graphene monolayer with bandwidth to central frequency ratio 0.3, and ~5 to 11 times larger with bandwidth to central frequency ratio 1.33. A distributed intercalation of three graphene monolayers proves a ~70% overall absorptivity with bandwidth to central frequency ratio 0.3.

  • Haloalkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons sensing using Langmuir–Blodgett thin film of pillar[5]arene-biphenylcarboxylic acid

    摘要: Here, a pillar[5]arene derivative including biphenylcarboxylic acid groups was designed for obtaining a macrocycle with an ideal cavity for volatile organic compounds. The pillar[5]arene-biphenylcarboxylic acid (P5-BPCA) based Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) thin films were produced onto 50 nm thick gold-coated glass and 3.5 MHz quartz crystal substrates to form a thin film chemical sensor element. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) techniques were employed to characterize all the P5-BPCA LB thin film layers. The mass of LB film layer loaded onto a quartz crystal and the resonance frequency shifts per layer were determined to be 711.71 ng per layer (2.68 ng mm?2) and 48.24 Hz per layer, respectively. The P5-BPCA LB thin film sensor element was exposed to various haloalkane and aromatic hydrocarbon vapors. The sensitivities of the P5-BPCA LB film sensor were determined between 1.776 and 3.976 Hz ppm-1. Sensitivity with detection limits were obtained between 0.754 and 1.689 ppm against organic vapors. The results showed that P5-BPCA LB thin film was highly selective with a large response to chloromethane vapor.

  • Optical and Judd-Ofelt spectroscopic study of Er3+/Pr3+-codoped Gd3Ga5O12 crystal

    摘要: Optical and spectroscopic properties of Er3+/Pr3+-codoped Gd3Ga5O12 single-crystal grown by Czochralski method have been studied. Absorption spectrum of the crystal was measured at room temperature and Er3+ absorption cross-section spectral distributions were calibrated from it. The Er3+ spectroscopic properties were analyzed on the basis of the Judd-Ofelt theory. Fundamental spectroscopic parameters were obtained that include absorption coefficient, cross-section spectral distribution, electronic transition oscillator strength, Judd-Ofelt parameters, fluorescence branch ratio, transition probability, radiative and fluorescence lifetimes, and quantum efficiency as well. Study shows that Pr3+-codoping results in substantial change of Er3+ spectroscopic properties, in qualitative consistent with the previous fluorescence studying result. In addition, refractive index of the crystal was measured at different wavelengths using prism coupling method, and the Sellmeier equation reported previously for Er3+-only doped Gd3Ga5O12 crystal is corrected.

  • Dynamic operation of liquid crystal cell with inherently nanogroove-featured aligned carbon nanotube sheets

    摘要: The use of a highly aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) sheet as a multifunctional constituent for liquid crystal (LC) displays and electro-optic LC applications is assessed. The CNT sheet can perform a dual function: one is an alignment layer for LCs, replacing the commonly used rubbed polyimide film, and the other is a transparent conductive layer, taking the place of indium tin oxide. The hydrophobic treatment improved the adhesion quality between aligned CNT bundles and the glass substrate, which helps to preserve the inherently aligned nanogroove morphology of transparent CNT sheets. The test LC display cells, comprising 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl molecules sandwiched between CNT-sheet-on-glass substrates, demonstrate the operation characteristics comparable to that of the conventional cell under temperature variation and ac electric field of 1 kHz. The results offer a possibility of deploying multifunctional CNT-sheet alignment layers in LC-based devices, especially in the future flexible display applications.

  • Five new coordination polymers of s- and d-block metals: Structural diversities, magnetic properties and luminescence

    摘要: In order to explore the metal ions-controlled syntheses of coordination polymers (CPs), the temperature and solvent ratio were fixed in the reaction processes. By selecting a series of s- and d-block metal ions, five new CPs, [ZnL0.5(H2O)2]n (1), [CoL0.5(H2O)2]n (2), [Mn(H2L)(H2O)2]n (3), [Ca(H2L)(H2O)2]n (4) and [Ba(H2L)(H2O)2]n (5), have been synthesized by employing a less-investigated oxalamide N,N′-bis(4-phthalic acid) (H4L) ligand. H4L shows very versatile coordination modes and leads to various frameworks, including isomorphous 2D grid-like layer based on M2O2 cores for 1 and 2, isomorphous 4-connected 3D PtS frameworks based on 1D [M(CO2)2]n chains for 3 and 4, and a 2D wave-like layer based on [BaO3]n chains for 5.2 and 3 reveal the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic properties, respectively, while 1, 4 and 5 possesses strong solid state luminescence.

  • Highly sensitive temperature sensor based on Sagnac interferometer with liquid crystal photonic crystal fibers

    摘要: We propose and investigate a temperature sensor based on Sagnac interferometer with liquid crystal (LC) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) by finite element method (FEM). LC E7 which is anisotropic under electrical field is designed to be infiltrated into the cladding air holes of PCF. The birefringent PCF is then launched into a Sagnac interferometer. The interference spectrum of the Sagnac interferometer is influenced by the thermal effect of LC E7 and thus could be used to measure the temperature. The simulation results show that the temperature measuring sensitivity and resolution reach to 15 nm/K and 6.7E?4 K in the range of 290–320 K. The measuring range and sensitivity could be modified further by optimizing the PCF structure parameters.

  • Simultaneously achieving a large negative dispersion and a high birefringence over Er and Tm dual gain bands in a square lattice photonic crystal fiber

    摘要: We proposed a novel photonic crystal fiber composed of a double-cladding square lattice that could be used in dual-band, Er and Tm optical gain bands, simultaneously supporting a large negative dispersion and a high birefringence. We theoretically investigated the light guiding property through the proposed PCF by using a vectorial finite element method (FEM) with a perfectly matched layer (PML). By optimizing the structural parameters, we obtained an ultra-large negative dispersion of -20,186ps/(nm?km) and a very high birefringence of 9.27 ×10-3 at the wavelength of 1.55μm in the Er gain band and a very large negative dispersion of -8,067ps/(nm?km) and a high birefringence of 1.0 ×10-3 at the wavelength of 1.87μm in the Tm band. We further discussed the roles of waveguide parameters on the chromatic dispersion, its slope, and the birefringence of the fiber as well as the mode field diameter. The proposed fiber could be directly applied for dual-band dispersion and polarization control in fiber laser cavities as well as optical communications and sensors in the dual bands.
