Bandwidth Allocation and Control Message Scheduling Algorithms for Improving the QoSs of High Priority Traffic in PON
摘要: The passive optical network (PON) is the most promising candidate for supporting multiple service classes, i.e., high priority (HP) traffic and best-effort (BE) traffic, in the next-generation broadband access networks. Providing an efficient dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm is the most important issue for supporting multiple service classes of traffic simultaneously. This paper presents a new DBA algorithm, which is the modified version of the hybrid slot-size/rate (HSSR) scheme, and is called the modified HSSR (MHSSR) algorithm. We have also modified the control message scheduling algorithm to fit it to the proposed scheme. In the proposed MHSSR scheme, each cycle time, i.e., the length of a time cycle, is equally divided into two parts. In the 1st part of the cycle time, the bandwidth is dynamically allocated to the HP traffic of all the optical network units (ONUs). In contrast, in the 2nd part of the cycle time, the bandwidth is dynamically allocated to the BE traffic of one or multiple ONUs. Furthermore, to ensure guaranteed service for the HP traffic, the 1st part of the cycle time is extended while the 2nd part of the cycle time is compressed if the demand of the HP traffic is very high. However, the 1st part of the cycle time will never be compressed, even at the lightly loaded condition of the HP traffic. The modified control message-scheduling algorithm effectively coordinates the timing sequence between the two parts of the cycle time and ensures the synchronization between two Gate messages to each ONU. We have evaluated the performance of the proposed schemes through numerical simulations in terms of end-to-end packet delay, bandwidth wastage, remaining bytes per time cycle, jitter, and throughput for different offered loads. From the comparative analysis, it can be seen that the proposed scheme provides better performance than the existing HSSR and delay variation-guaranteed schemes.

摘要: Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexing PON (TWDM-PON) is next generation PON technology that increases the PON capacity due to having multiple wavelengths for both upstream and downstream links with tunable transceivers in the optical network units (ONUs). It is also proposed for connecting radio units to the cloud, termed as mobile front-haul, in 5G. The most important feature of TWDM PON is a dynamic wavelength assignment scheme that can efficiently handle ONU migration from one wavelength to another to balance the traffic load. In this study, the working of DWA mechanism for ITU compliant TWDM PON is presented and an adaptive DWBA scheme is presented that can dynamically handle ONU migration in case of asymmetric traffic load conditions. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated through a TWDM PON test bed implemented in OMNET++ environment. For the traffic load analysis a simple regression model is used. Overall, the ADWBA scheme reduces the average upstream delays of T2 and T3 up to 28% and of T4 up to 50% with valuable reduction in bandwidth wastage.

Priority-based mode transformation algorithm in a multisystem-based virtual passive optical network
摘要: With the development of passive optical network, different standards will occur in the same network topology. Virtualization technology is a preferable solution for multi-standard coexistence. In this paper, priority-based mode transformation algorithm is proposed for cross-standard bandwidth management in multisystem-based virtual passive optical network (VPON) in metro-access optical network (MAON). It is aimed to improve the fairness between priority services as well as the utilization of network resources. According to service lever agreement (SLA), priority services are divided into three categories: Expedited Forwarding (EF), Assured Forwarding (AF) and Best Effort (BE). For the ?rst time, a model transformation scenario that requires consideration of priority is analyzed. Under the model transformation scenario, multi-dimension 0/1 knapsack models of the priority-based mode transformation algorithm are established. By solving the model, an optimal combination of ONUs for mode transformation can be found. Finally, the simulation shows that the priority-based mode transformation algorithm and the single ONU mode transformation algorithm differ in the amount of each service’s transformation bandwidth. It further demonstrates the contribution of the proposed algorithm in fairness.

Thermal Shock Performance of DBA/AMB Substrates Plated by Ni and Ni–P Layers for High-Temperature Applications of Power Device Modules
摘要: The thermal cycling life of direct bonded aluminum (DBA) and active metal brazing (AMB) substrates with two types of plating—Ni electroplating and Ni–P electroless plating—was evaluated by thermal shock tests between ?50 and 250 ?C. AMB substrates with Al2O3 and AlN fractured only after 10 cycles, but with Si3N4 ceramic, they retained good thermal stability even beyond 1000 cycles, regardless of the metallization type. The Ni layer on the surviving AMB substrates with Si3N4 was not damaged, while a crack occurred in the Ni–P layer. For DBA substrates, fracture did not occur up to 1000 cycles for all kind of ceramics. On the other hand, the Ni–P layer was roughened and cracked according to the severe deformation of the aluminum layer, while the Ni layer was not damaged after thermal shock tests. In addition, the deformation mechanism of an Al plate on a ceramic substrate was investigated both by microstructural observation and ?nite element method (FEM) simulation, which con?rmed that grain boundary sliding was a key factor in the severe deformation of the Al layer that resulted in the cracking of the Ni–P layer. The fracture suppression in the Ni layer on DBA/AMB substrates can be attributed to its ductility and higher strength compared with those of Ni–P plating.

Grant-sizing-differentiated bandwidth allocation algorithm for the coexistence of ONUs with and without wavelength tunability in WDM/TDM PONs
摘要: Adopting the pay-as-you-grow approach to upgrade passive optical network (PON) facilities by WDM technology insures the smoothness of the upgrade, and also results in the coexistence of wavelength-fixed/tunable optical network units (ONUs) in WDM/TDM PONs. Dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) is the key to support such coexistence of heterogeneous ONUs. Thus, DBA is also the key to support the smooth evolution of PONs. To more fairly coordinate the bandwidth allocation among the coexisting heterogeneous ONUs, a differentiated grant sizing (DGS) scheme is proposed. In DGS, not only the fairness between the wavelength-fixed/tunable ONUs but also the fairness between the lightly/heavily loaded ONUs is taken into account. To further carry out load balancing among wavelengths, a grant scheduling scheme is also proposed to cooperate with the grant sizing scheme. In the grant scheduling scheme, a measure of the ONUs’ flexibility is given, and then the least flexible job first rule (LFJF) is adopted for joint wavelength and time-slot assignment. Finally, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, a series of comparative analyses is conducted based on simulation experiments.

摘要: In today’s global IP traffic trend, there are various service types that differ based on users’ demands and technologies deployed in different regions. Besides real time entertainment services, there is also a rapid increase in demand to deliver best-effort services such as voice over internet protocol (VoIP), offline viewing, file sharing, and web browsing in a cost-efficient manner. Integrated fiber-wireless (FiWi) broadband access networks have emerged as a promising broadband access technology that can provide high quality e-services to large number of distributed wireless subscribers. In this paper, we deal with a converged 10-Gigabit capable passive optical network (XG-PON) and an enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) based Wi-Fi architecture that incorporates an efficient deficit dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm at the optical line terminal (OLT) to support different Quality of Service (QoS) needs of users efficiently. The performance evaluation of the integrated network is carried out in the NS-3 simulator and the results are reported in terms of delay and fairness index. It is observed that the performance of the integrated network is improved both in terms of average delay and fairness index up to a certain load.

摘要: Optical access networks are rapidly evolving mainly driven by the higher bandwidth requirements. XGPON is one of the most cost-effective solutions to upgrade existing GPON since it reuses existing optical distribution networks. Thanks to the high XGPON capacity, these networks can connect heterogeneous users such as base stations (BS), residential users (RU) or business users (BU). Statistical multiplexing of XGPON allows assigning different bandwidth to the different users based on their demands and always guaranteeing the agreed service level agreements. This work aims at evaluating the impact of packet delay and throughput for different XGPON scenarios for different user distributions. Furthermore, the paper evaluates the flexibility to cope with extra traffic caused by existing protection schemes.
