  • In-Line Holography in Transmission Electron Microscopy for the Atomic Resolution Imaging of Single Particle of Radiation-Sensitive Matter

    摘要: In this paper, for the first time it is shown how in-line holography in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) enables the study of radiation-sensitive nanoparticles of organic and inorganic materials providing high-contrast holograms of single nanoparticles, while illuminating specimens with a density of current as low as 1–2 e???2s?1. This provides a powerful method for true single-particle atomic resolution imaging and opens up new perspectives for the study of soft matter in biology and materials science. The approach is not limited to a particular class of TEM specimens, such as homogenous samples or samples specially designed for a particular TEM experiment, but has better application in the study of those specimens with differences in shape, chemical composition, crystallography, and orientation, which cannot be currently addressed at atomic resolution.

  • Characterization of Thermal Damage Due to Two-Temperature High-Order Thermal Lagging in a Three-Dimensional Biological Tissue Subjected to a Rectangular Laser Pulse

    摘要: The use of lasers and thermal transfers on the skin is fundamental in medical and clinical treatments. In this paper, we constructed and applied bioheat transfer equations in the context of a two-temperature heat conduction model in order to discuss the three-dimensional variation in the temperature of laser-irradiated biological tissue. The amount of thermal damage in the tissue was calculated using the Arrhenius integral. Mathematical difficulties were encountered in applying the equations. As a result, the Laplace and Fourier transform technique was employed, and solutions for the conductive temperature and dynamical temperature were obtained in the Fourier transform domain.

  • Investigation of hole quality in drilled Ti/CFRP/Ti laminates using CO2 laser

    摘要: The machinability of titanium (Ti) and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) (Ti/CFRP/Ti) laminates using CO2 laser is presented in this work. The effect of line energy and laser frequency on output responses such as heat affected zone (HAZ), taper angle (TA), metal composite interface (MCI) damage, surface roughness, dross height, and circularity were investigated. Line energy - the most influential parameter - demonstrated a threshold behavior; no drilling was observed below a certain line energy. Scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), micro-computed tomography (μ-CT), and other imaging techniques were used to establish a correlation between laser parameters and CO2 laser machined damage in Ti/CFRP/Ti laminates. The results show that using a higher frequency and lower line energy can significantly improve the hole quality. However, dross free holes with minimum taper can be obtained using higher line energy.

  • Detection of collapsed buildings due to the 2016 Kumamoto, Japan, earthquake from Lidar data

    摘要: The 2016 Kumamoto earthquake sequence was triggered by an Mw 6.2 event at 21:26 on April 14. Approximately 28 hours later, at 1:25 on April 16, an Mw 7.0 event (the mainshock) followed. The epicenters of both events were located near the residential area of Mashiki town and the region nearby. Due to very strong seismic ground motion, the earthquake produced extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure. In this paper, collapsed buildings were detected using a pair of digital surface models (DSMs), taken before and after the April 16 mainshock by airborne light detection and ranging (Lidar) flights. Different methods for extracting the collapsed buildings from the data were evaluated, and the change of average elevations within a building footprint was found to be the most important feature. Finally, the distribution of collapsed buildings in the study area was presented, and the result was consistent with that of a building damage survey performed after the earthquake.

  • Investigation of interface characteristics of Al2O3/Si under various O2 plasma exposure times during the deposition of Al2O3 by PA-ALD

    摘要: Plasma-assisted atomic layer deposition (PA-ALD) is more suitable than thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) for mass production because of its faster growth rate. However, controlling surface damage caused by plasma during the PA-ALD process is a key issue. In this study, the passivation characteristics of Al2O3 layers deposited by PA-ALD were investigated with various O2 plasma exposure times. The growth per cycle (GPC) during Al2O3 deposition was saturated at approximately 1.4 ?/cycle after an O2 plasma exposure time of 1.5 s, and a refractive index of Al2O3 in the range of 1.65–1.67 was obtained. As the O2 plasma exposure time increased in the Al2O3 deposition process, the passivation properties tended to deteriorate, and as the radio frequency (RF) power increased, the passivation uniformity and the thermal stability of the Al2O3 layer deteriorated. To study the Al2O3/Si interface characteristics, the capacitance-voltage (C-V) and the conductance-voltage (G-V) were measured using a mercury probe, and the ?xed charge density (Qf) and the interface trap density (Dit) were then extracted. The Qf of the Al2O3 layer deposited on a Si wafer by PA-ALD was almost una?ected, but the Dit increased with O2 plasma exposure time. In conclusion, as the O2 plasma exposure time increased during Al2O3 layer deposition by PA-ALD, the Al2O3/Si interface characteristics deteriorated because of plasma surface damage.

  • Bactericidal action of ferulic acid with ultraviolet-A light irradiation

    摘要: The bactericidal activity of ferulic acid (FA) against various microorganisms was remarkably enhanced by ultraviolet-A (UV-A) irradiation (wavelength, 365 nm). However, the bactericidal mechanism in the photo-combination system has not been evaluated. In the present study, this combined treatment was characterized by investigating associated changes in cellular functions of Escherichia coli, including assessments of respiratory activity, lipid peroxidation, membrane permeability, and damage to DNA and the cell surface. FA adsorbed onto and was incorporated into bacterial membranes, and the affinity resulted in decreased respiratory activity and enhanced lipid peroxidation in the cytoplasmic membrane with low-fluence (1.0 J/cm2) UV-A irradiation. Flow cytometry analysis revealed that additional exposure (8 J/cm2) combined with FA (1 mg/mL) induced increased cell permeability, yielding a 4.8-log decrease in the viable cell count. Morphologically, the treated cells exhibited a bacterial membrane dysfunction, producing many vesicles on the cell surface. However, despite this effect on the cell surface, plasmid DNA transformed into FA-treated E. coli maintained supercoiled integrity with negligible DNA oxidation. Our data strongly suggested that FA functions inside and outside the bacterial membrane; UV-A exposure in the presence of FA then causes increased oxidative modification and subsequent disruption of the bacterial membrane, without causing detectable genotoxicity.

  • Remote sensing bio-control damage on aquatic invasive alien plant species

    摘要: Aquatic Invasive Alien Plant (AIAP) species are a major threat to freshwater ecosystems, placing great strain on South Africa’s limited water resources. Bio-control programmes have been initiated in an effort to mitigate the negative environmental impacts associated with their presence in non-native areas. Remote sensing can be used as an effective tool to detect, map and monitor bio-control damage on AIAP species. This paper reconciles previous and current research concerning the application of remote sensing to detect and map bio-control damage on AIAP species. Initially, the spectral characteristics of bio-control damage are described. Thereafter, the potential of remote sensing chlorophyll content and chlorophyll fluorescence as pre-visual indicators of bio-control damage are reviewed and synthesised. The utility of multispectral and hyperspectral sensors for mapping different severities of bio-control damage are also discussed. Popular machine learning algorithms that offer operational potential to classify bio-control damage are proposed. This paper concludes with the challenges of remote sensing bio-control damage as well as proposes recommendations to guide future research to successfully detect and map bio-control damage on AIAP species.

  • Selective Visualization of Live-Cell Mitochondrial Thiophenols and Their Induced Oxidative Stress Process by a Rationally Designed Rhodol-Based Fluorescent Probe

    摘要: Mitochondria as cellular powerhouses are the preferential targets affected by thiophenols, an important class of highly toxic environmental pollutants, and are linked to the production of pathogenic reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by trace thiophenol residues. For real-time and accurate sensing, it is critically important to develop highly sensitive fluorescent probes for the specific detection of mitochondrial thiophenols. Herein, we report the first mitochondria-targeted fluorescent probe (ROAL) to image thiophenols in living cells. The development of ROAL was based on a novel red-emitting rhodol derivative (ROAP). ROAL proved to be highly selective to thiophenols among various analytes including aliphatic thiols, and renders an ultrasensitive off-on fluorescence response to thiophenols with a remarkable detection limit (8.1 nM). The probe efficiently stains mitochondria with a high Pearson’s co-localization coefficient (0.95) using Mito Tracker Green FM as reference, thereby ensuring the specific detection of mitochondrial thiophenols in living HepG2 and HeLa cells. In particular, using this probe we for the first time proved that endogenous reactive oxygen species have the capacity to eliminate thiophenols in living cells, suggesting that thiophenols might induce cellular oxidative stress.

  • Nonlinear Ultrasonic Detection Method for Delamination Damage of Lined Anti-Corrosion Pipes Using PZT Transducers

    摘要: Lined anti-corrosion pipes are widely used in oil and gas, petrochemical, pharmaceutical industries. However, defects, especially delamination, may occur in the production and service of pipes which result in safety accidents. Based on nonlinear ultrasonic theory, this paper studied the delamination detection method using the nonlinear harmonics for lined anti-corrosion pipes. The response characteristics of the anti-corrosion pipe were obtained through a sweep sine response experiment and the preferred excitation frequency was determined. The Wavelet Packet transform and Hilbert–Huang transform is applied for signal process and feature extraction. Then, a series of experiments were carried out and the results were analyzed and discussed. The results showed that a second-order and third-order nonlinear coefficient increased with the delamination damage. The amplitude of second-harmonic is much stronger than the third-order one. The mean squared error of the nonlinear coefficient, which was processed by Wavelet Packet transform and Hilbert–Huang transform, is smaller than wavelet packet transform and Discrete Fourier transform or processed only Hilbert–Huang transform. The higher harmonics can describe the change of delamination damage, which means that the nonlinear ultrasonic detection method could use for damage detection of anti-corrosion pipe. The nonlinear higher-harmonic is sensitive to delamination damage. The nonlinear ultrasonic method has the potential for damage detection for lined anti-corrosion pipes.

  • Hyperspectral Imaging for Evaluating Impact Damage to Mango According to Changes in Quality Attributes

    摘要: Evaluation of impact damage to mango (Mangifera indica Linn) as a result of dropping from three different heights, namely, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 m, was conducted by hyperspectral imaging (HSI). Reflectance spectra in the 900–1700 nm region were used to develop prediction models for pulp firmness (PF), total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA) and chroma (?b*) by a partial least squares (PLS) regression algorithm. The results showed that the changes in the mangoes’ quality attributes, which were also reflected in the spectra, had a strong relationship with dropping height. The best predictive performance measured by coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean square errors of prediction (RMSEP) values were: 0.84 and 31.6 g for PF, 0.9 and 0.49 oBrix for TSS, 0.65 and 0.1% for TA, 0.94 and 0.96 for chroma, respectively. Classification of the degree of impact damage to mango achieved an accuracy of more than 77.8% according to ripening index (RPI). The results show the potential of HSI to evaluate impact damage to mango by combining with changes in quality attributes.
