Reflectance confocal microscopy features of labial melanotic macule: Report of three cases
摘要: The term labial melanotic macule of the lips (MML) is used to describe a flat-pigmented lesion on the vermilion border, with an estimated prevalence of up to 3% of the population. Most MMLs are located on the lower lip and are more common in female patients. MMLs are mostly associated with hyperpigmentation of the basal keratinocytes with normal to a slightly increased density of melanocytes; an infiltrate of melanophages in the superficial dermis can also contribute to the pigmented appearance of MMLs. These benign lesions may raise concern for melanoma or may be confused with other labial pigmentary disorders. Dermoscopy is widely used for the diagnosis of pigmented and nonpigmented lesions on the skin. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is an in vivo, noninvasive imaging technique that allows horizontal optical sectioning of skin at cellular-level resolution, from the surface to a depth of about 200 μm. Although the lips are amenable for hand-held RCM examination, publications about the RCM findings in MMLs are limited. To improve the recognition of MML under RCM, we report on 3 cases of biopsy-proven MMLs.

摘要: In this paper, we propose a novel segmentation method that has been used for segmenting lesions in dermoscopy images. This method uses the variational level sets formulation with a novel area term based on supervised learning that results in the global optimization of a cost function, that can potentially result in a robust segmentation of the images. This term uses a mixture of Gaussians that are trained from a set of training images, and evolves an active contour such that the difference between the learned models and the empirical distributions obtained from the evolving curve for both the lesion and the skin are minimized. In the end, our approach is validated on the publicly available PH2 dermoscopy imaging dataset and the results show that the proposed method outperforms the other state-of-the-art methods that have been considered in this paper.

Dermoscopic evaluation of melanocytic nevi changes after photoepilation techniques: a prospective study
摘要: Background: The clinical and dermoscopic changes of melanocytic nevi under the effects of photo-epilation are poorly known. Objective: Prospective study on clinical and dermatoscopic effects of photoepilation on melanocytic nevi. Methods: Eighteen patients exposed to photo-epilation gave consent to a follow-up program from 2008 to 2017 at the Videodermatoscopic Office of the Dermatology Clinic of Cagliari (Italy), with clinical and dermoscopic assessment. Results: A mean 2-year follow-up was recorded for 73 lesions. The most frequent clinical change was nevi colour, clearer than basal pictures, sometimes with increased pigmentation at the periphery, or residual islands of pigmentation, with vanishing borders. Acute burn with crusting was noted in few cases. Only one case showed progressive growth. Corresponding dermoscopic findings were bleaching of nevi, followed by pigment network disruption, appearance of white structureless areas and grey-blue globules. Complete regression occurred in 32.8% of the lesions. The growing nevus was characterized by peripheral globules. Excision for histopathological examination showed a compound nevus with mild atypia. Conclusions: Although malignant modifications of nevi after photo-epilation have not been described, the clinical and dermoscopic changes we observed suggest to extend the follow for more than 24 months, as the potential long term adverse effects of photo-epilation on melanocytic nevi are unknown.
