  • Luminescent Sulfur Quantum Dots for Colorimetric Discrimination of Multiple Metal Ions.

    摘要: The classical chemistry of sodium thiosulphate was applied to synthesize luminescent Sdots where elemental sulfur produced in situ was etched with NaOH. This method notably reduces the synthesis time of Sdots in comparison to the previously reported etching technique of bulk sulfur. The as-synthesized Sdots exhibited excitation dependent photoluminescence with a QY of 2.5 %, photostabality under UV light irradiation, excellent dispersibility in aqueous medium and also the stability even after several weeks. Notably, no emission was observed due to the oxidation of PEG-400 during the course of reaction. The Sdots was then employed as a dual function probe for the sensing of metal ions. Using fluorimetric method, Sdots showed preferential selectivity towards the Co2+ metal ions. However, a single probe Sdots can colorimetrically distinguish multiple metal ions such as Co2+, Cr6+ and Pb2+ by displaying color change on the immediate addition of analytes. Furthermore, the color change of Sdots is demonstrated with the help of hue images and hue spectra (or histogram) that will help in the development of Sdots based portable device. The present study contributes to the further advancement of this emerging field as a promising single-element nanomaterial an alternative to luminescent metallic nanomaterials.

  • An image features assisted line selection method in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

    摘要: Analytical lines play a crucial role in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technology. To improve the classification performance of LIBS, an image features assisted line selection (IFALS) method which based on spectral morphology and the characteristics of Harris corners was proposed. With this method, a classification experiment for 24 metamorphic rock samples was conducted with linear discriminant analysis (LDA) algorithm. The result showed that the classification accuracy was increased from 94.38% of the conventional classification model MLS-LDA (Manual line selection-linear discriminant analysis) to 98.54% of IFALS-LDA. Furthermore, the time required for the whole classification process was decreased from 2768.38 seconds of MLS-LDA to 4.36 seconds of the proposed method, thus the classification efficiency was greatly improved. In addition, compared with the existing automatic line selection method, the convergence rate of IFALS-LDA is significantly faster than that of ASPI (Automatic Spectral Peaks Identification)-LDA. This study demonstrates that LIBS assisted with the image features in machine vision can promote the analytical performance of LIBS technology.

  • The Spectral-Spatial Joint Learning for Change Detection in Multispectral Imagery

    摘要: Change detection is one of the most important applications in the remote sensing domain. More and more attention is focused on deep neural network based change detection methods. However, many deep neural networks based methods did not take both the spectral and spatial information into account. Moreover, the underlying information of fused features is not fully explored. To address the above-mentioned problems, a Spectral-Spatial Joint Learning Network (SSJLN) is proposed. SSJLN contains three parts: spectral-spatial joint representation, feature fusion, and discrimination learning. First, the spectral-spatial joint representation is extracted from the network similar to the Siamese CNN (S-CNN). Second, the above-extracted features are fused to represent the difference information that proves to be effective for the change detection task. Third, the discrimination learning is presented to explore the underlying information of obtained fused features to better represent the discrimination. Moreover, we present a new loss function that considers both the losses of the spectral-spatial joint representation procedure and the discrimination learning procedure. The effectiveness of our proposed SSJLN is verified on four real data sets. Extensive experimental results show that our proposed SSJLN can outperform the other state-of-the-art change detection methods.

  • Recurrent neural networks for discrimination of exo-atmospheric targets based on infrared radiation signature

    摘要: Exo-atmospheric infrared (IR) target discrimination is an important research problem in space attack and defense. The different micro-motion states of the targets result in respective characteristics in the obtained IR radiation intensity sequences, and this difference is difficult to describe intuitively and extract effectively. Few methods can effectively contact the data with the micro-motion model, resulting in a low classification accuracy and difficult to meeting actual application requirements. We set up four types of targets by constructing the micro-motion model of the exo-atmospheric targets, including the warhead and heavy decoy, with spinning and coning motion; and the light decoy and debris, with tumbling motion, to get the IR radiation intensity sequences. We use random projection to improve the discrimination power of recurrent neural network, and to classify the time series of IR radiation intensity. Experimental results demonstrate that random projection recurrent neural network (R-RNN) is more effective than several other typical algorithms in time series classification (TSC) task, which can achieve an excellent target discrimination. We also analyze the effect of noise on the performance of the algorithm.

    摘要: In order to discriminate the real targets, the clutter and the dense multi-false targets, we propose a factorized convolutional neural network-based algorithm for radar targets discrimination. We factorized convolutional neural network model with depthwise separable convolution. To reduce the parameters of the model, we factorized convolutional neural network by reducing the numbers of both convolutional filters and connection nodes of fully connected layers. The result of the measured data demonstrates that, as compared with the existing model, the simplified factorized convolutional neural network has higher discrimination rate for the real targets, the clutter and the dense multi-false targets, and its parameters are less than ten percent counterpart of a recent proposed model.

  • Development of a high resolution LaGPS imaging detector with pulse shape discrimination capability of different types of radiations

    摘要: Ce doped (Gd,La)2Si2O7 (LaGPS) is a new scintillator which has high light output and is a promising candidate for high resolution radiation imaging detectors. Thus we developed a radiation imaging detector using a LaGPS plate combined with a position sensitive photomultiplier tube (PSPMT) and evaluated the performance. We found that the decay times of LaGPS were different with the types of radiations and the separations of the images of the different types of radiations were possible using pulse shape discrimination. The spatial resolution for Am-241 alpha particles (5.5 MeV) was better than 0.31 mm FWHM and the energy resolution was 11 % FWHM. The spatial resolution for Sr–Y-90 beta particles was ~0.6 mm FWHM and those for Co-57 gamma photons (122 keV) and Cs-137 X-ray (~35 keV) were better than 0.6 mm FWHM and ~0.8 mm FWHM, respectively. The decay times for alpha particles, beta particles, and gamma photons were 143 ns, 124 ns, and 119 ns, respectively. With these different decay times, the separation of alpha particles and gamma photons or beta particles was possible using the pulse shape discrimination. We conclude that the developed LaGPS imaging detector has high resolution for all types of radiations and is also capable of the simultaneous imaging and separating the different types of radiations.

    摘要: We propose a method for discriminating among competing models for biological systems. Our approach is based on learning temporal logic formulas from data obtained by simulating the models. We apply this method to find dynamic features of epidermal growth factor induced extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation that are strictly unique to positive versus negative feedback models. We first search for a temporal logic formula from a training set that can eliminate ERK dynamics observed with both models and then identify the ERK dynamics that are unique to each model. The obtained formulas are tested with a validation sample set and the decision rates and classification rates are estimated using the Chernoff bound. The results can be used in guiding and optimizing the design of experiments for model discrimination.

    摘要: Gaze tracking (GT) systems have attracted the attention of researchers as well as the commercial sector. Commercial systems are readily available, but they are usually fabricated at the same size. In this study, we propose a three-dimensional (3-D)-printable frame and an open-source system to fabricate a wearable GT system with low-cost configuration and reasonable performance. A 3-D printer achieves repeatable and adjustable design. The estimated price to make the GT hardware is less than €100, and the system’s average accuracy is 2.58°. Our GT system has a 24-Hz sampling rate, which can analyze human interest points. Another contribution of this study is developing the automatic discrimination of interest objects using our proposed GT and machine learning. The output of this combination system is a database that consists of labeled objects. The label with the highest frequency indicates the object of the highest interest for a corresponding user. Our combination system has a 7-Hz sampling rate and a 3.8% classification error.

  • Novel S-Bend Resonator Based on a Multi-Mode Waveguide with Mode Discrimination for a Refractive Index Sensor

    摘要: In this paper, a multi-mode waveguide-based optical resonator is proposed for an integrated optical refractive index sensor. Conventional optical resonators have been studied for single-mode waveguide-based resonators to enhance the performance, but mass production is limited owing to the high fabrication costs of nano-scale structures. To overcome this problem, we designed an S-bend resonator based on a micro-scale multi-mode waveguide. In general, multi-mode waveguides cannot be utilized as optical resonators, because of a performance degradation resulting from modal dispersion and an output transmission with multi-peaks. Therefore, we exploited the mode discrimination phenomenon using the bending loss, and the resulting S-bend resonator yielded an output transmission without multi-peaks. This phenomenon is utilized to remove higher-order modes e?ciently using the di?erence in the e?ective refractive index between the higher-order and fundamental modes. As a result, the resonator achieved a Q-factor and sensitivity of 2.3 × 103 and 52 nm/RIU, respectively, using the variational ?nite-di?erence time-domain method. These results show that the multi-mode waveguide-based S-bend resonator with a wide line width can be utilized as a refractive index sensor.

    摘要: Computational models are useful for quantitative elucidation of the dynamical behavior of biological systems. Oftentimes, several competing models (i.e., hypotheses) are proposed to describe the underlying molecular mechanisms of a biological system. Selecting the most representative model is imperative for obtaining meaningful quantitative insights into the dynamics of the system of interest. However, the discrimination between competing models poses a significant challenge due to heterogeneity that is intrinsic to biological systems. This letter demonstrates the effectiveness of a probabilistic approach to optimal experiment design for model discrimination in the presence of time-invariant cell-to-cell differences within a cell population. The JAK2/STAT5 signaling pathway, which is involved in proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells, is used as a case study.
