  • Human Ultraweak Photon Emission: Key Analytical Aspects, Results and Future Trends – A Review

    摘要: Living systems emit what is called ultraweak photon emission (UPE). This visually undetectable phenomenon has only been studied in humans for the last 30 years, finding that UPE is a complex process depending on multitude factors. Considering previous literature, this review discusses the in vivo UPE from human beings. To this aim, Analytical Approaches Employed for UPE Measurement section focuses on the analytical techniques employed (photomultipliers and charged coupled device cameras), summarizing analytical conditions and reporting figures of merit reached to date. Then, Human UPE Depending on External Factors and Human UPE Depending on Internal Factors sections address external and internal factors, which have proved to affect UPE, pointing out the important influence on oxidative processes outside and inside the body, and also highlighting some personal states of the individuals affecting UPE. Last section is devoted to give a general view on the goals and achieved up to date regarding UPE measurement, emphasizing some potential applications as well as recommendations which include: use of UPE spectra information together with UPE intensity, larger populations (≈50–100 subjects), studies on internal states of individuals, and use of statistical tools.

  • 3D spectroscopic measurement of argon and metal vapour in MIG welding

    摘要: Spectroscopic measurements for gas-metal arc (GMA) phenomena have been recently performed. The studies have reported that the metal vapour behaviour greatly affects the arc properties. However, they can be applied only to axially symmetric phenomena because of the assumption used for the measurement. GMA welding are normally performed with a travel speed, and most of the phenomena become axially asymmetric. This study constructed the simultaneous and multidirectional measurement system by 12 CCD cameras which can capture such axially asymmetric GMA phenomena. We measured the metal inert gas welding process with use of two types of narrowband interference filters for Ar I and Fe I during the one measurement, and observed axially asymmetrical intensity distributions in the globular and the spray transfer mode. We found that the globular transfer mode that is seemingly chaotic distribution can be regarded as the distribution where the deviation of Ar I is larger than Fe I from the axially symmetric double-ring distribution that consists of Ar I and Fe I.

  • In-Parallel Polar Monitoring of Chemiluminescence Emission Anisotropy at the Solida??Liquid Interface by an Optical Fiber Radial Array

    摘要: Chemiluminescence (CL) detection is widely employed in biosensors and miniaturized analytical devices since it offers high detectability and flexible device design (there are no geometry requirements for the measurement cell, except the ability to collect the largest fraction of emitted photons). Although the emission anisotropy phenomenon for an emitting dipole bound to the interface between two media with different refractive index is well known for fluorescence, it is still poorly investigated for CL reactions, in which the excited-state reaction products can diffuse in solution before the photon emission event. In this paper, we propose a simple method for the real-time evaluation of the CL emission anisotropy based on a radial array of optical fibers, embedded in a poly(methyl methacrylate) semicylinder and coupled with a Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) camera through a suitable interface. The polar-time evolutions of the CL emission have been studied for catalyzing enzymes immobilized onto a solid surface (heterogeneous configuration) or free in solution (homogeneous configuration). Evidence of the anisotropy phenomenon is observed, indicating that the lifetime of the excited-state products of the enzyme-catalyzed reactions is shorter than the time required for their diffusion in solution at a distance at which the CL can be considered isotropic. These results open new perspectives in the development of CL-based miniaturized analytical devices.

    摘要: Aerosols play a key role in climate change by affecting earth’s radiation budget, and by influencing cloud properties and precipitation patterns in the atmosphere. Additionally, local and regional air quality is affected by natural and anthropogenic aerosols. Lidar systems are capable of measuring altitude dependent aerosol properties over continuous time spans, and thus are widely used optical remote sensing tools for atmospheric monitoring. In this study, we have utilized a CCD camera-based bistatic imaging Lidar (CLidar) to monitor spatial and temporal distributions of boundary layer aerosols in Nassau, Bahamas.

  • Imaging of plutonium particles using a CCD-camera-based alpha-particle imaging system

    摘要: Measuring individual activities of Plutonium dioxide (PuO2) particles is extremely important for the internal exposure of a worker to these particles. For this purpose, a film-based autoradiographic camera, Imaging Plates, and a SiPM-based alpha particle imaging detector have been used in a site of nuclear facilities. However, there is a room for improvement regarding a spatial resolution or a quantification of activity. Recently, an alpha imaging system using a cooled CCD camera has been developed and used for detecting Pu contamination in a glove box. In this study, actual PuO2 particles were measured using the CCD-camera-based alpha-particle imaging system, and the system’s effectiveness was proven by comparing to conventional systems. An electron multiplying (EM) CCD Camera (ImagEM X2 C9100-23B, Hamamatsu, Japan) was used for alpha particle imaging in this study. A Pu sample was placed on top of the ZnS(Ag) scintillator, and produced scintillation light was captured using the CCD camera. The number of alpha particles on a 2-dimensional distribution image was measured to convert into activity. The frame rate for obtaining the image was set to 33.3 frames/s (at 30 ms intervals). This study showed that the CCD camera-based alpha-particle imaging system has some advantages compared to the conventional alpha particle imaging systems; 1) High spatial resolution, 2) Counting capability of individual alpha particles, 3) Real-time imaging.

  • High resolution, high signal-to-noise crystal spectrometer for measurements of line shifts in high-density plasmas

    摘要: The Orion high-resolution x-ray (OHREX) spectrometer has been a successful tool for measuring the shapes of density-broadened spectral lines produced in short-pulse heated plasmas at the Orion laser facility. We have recently out?tted the instrument with a charge-couple device (CCD) camera, which greatly increased the accuracy with which we can perform line-shift measurements. Because OHREX is located on the outside of the Orion target chamber, no provisions for the shielding of electromagnetic pulses are required. With the CCD, we obtained a higher signal-to-noise ratio than we previously obtained with an image-plate detector. This allowed us to observe structure in the image produced by the diffraction from the two OHREX crystals, which was highly reproducible from shot to shot. This structure will ultimately limit the accuracy of our spectroscopic measurements.
