    摘要: Smart home systems have already become one of the most important applications of Internet of Things. Previously, the investment cost of smart home systems was quite expensive which required a lot of installation issues. However, wireless solutions offered by IoT applications has decreased the investment costs and brought easy, do it yourself solutions. In parallel to this, smart LED light sources and lighting control infrastructure have also been developed. In this study, it’s aimed to investigate the latest technological developments in Internet of Things, smart LED lamps and control systems and application areas in residential lighting with regard to new communication protocols and standards. It is also aimed to investigate energy saving opportunities by smart LED lamps in comparison to incandescent lamps, CFLs and LEDs.

  • A Smart Sensor Data Transmission Technique for Logistics and Intelligent Transportation Systems

    摘要: When it comes to Internet of Things systems that include both a logistics system and an intelligent transportation system, a smart sensor is one of the key elements to collect useful information whenever and wherever necessary. This study proposes the Smart Sensor Node Group Management Medium Access Control Scheme designed to group smart sensor devices and collect data from them efficiently. The proposed scheme performs grouping of portable sensor devices connected to a system depending on the distance from the sink node and transmits data by setting different buffer thresholds to each group. This method reduces energy consumption of sensor devices located near the sink node and enhances the IoT system’s general energy efficiency. When a sensor device is moved and, thus, becomes unable to transmit data, it is allocated to a new group so that it can continue transmitting data to the sink node.

  • [Sustainable Energy Developments] Geothermal,Wind and Solar Energy Applications in Agriculture and Aquaculture || Chapter 7: Fundamentals of solar energy

    摘要: Modern agricultural systems are characterized by the intensive and optimal use of land and water, turning agricultural exploitation into a semi-industrial concept. Greenhouses are systems suitable both for zones with unfavorable climatic conditions – allowing crop growth regardless of the ambient temperature – and for regions with less restrictive weather – with the aim of increasing crop productivity and improving fruit quality. In this context, a secure and environmentally friendly energy supply must be considered, for any power range or circumstance, including for stand-alone installations. Crop growth is primarily determined by climate and the amount of water and fertilizers applied through irrigation. Therefore, greenhouses are ideal for farming because they allow one to optimize these physical parameters, via the photosynthetic process (Ramírez-Arias et al., 2012), to enhance biomass production. This manipulation requires energy consumption, depending on the crop’s physiological requirements, and the production patterns adopted for yield quantity and timing. The present general concern on the development of more efficient and sustainable productive activities has increased interest in the evaluation of alternatives to the conventional energy sources in the sector; presently many are involved in processes for assessing the environmental feasibility and technological development of such alternatives (Antón et al., 2007; Bojacá et al., 2014; Martínez-Blanco et al., 2011; Page et al., 2012; Romero-Gámez et al., 2012; Torrellas et al., 2013; van der Werf et al., 2014). This work aims to provide an overview of the existing options for the integration of renewable sources in greenhouses located in semi-arid regions where, for example, the high availability of solar radiation facilitates its use for the fulfillment of a certain percentage of the heat and/or electricity loads of greenhouses. Accordingly, this overview contains the basic technological aspects of the main renewable technologies applicable in greenhouses, some simplified design tools and criteria for their selection. Finally, it includes a summary of selected experiences in this field. The main objective is to contribute to a better understanding of the technologies that should support the promotion and development of projects for the implementation of renewable energies in agriculture.

    摘要: This paper considers cell-free and user-centric approaches for coverage improvement in wireless cellular systems operating at millimeter wave frequencies, and proposes downlink power control algorithms aimed at maximizing the global energy efficiency. To tackle the non-convexity of the problems, an interaction between sequential and alternating optimization is considered. The use of hybrid analog/digital beamformers is also taken into account. The numerical results show the benefits obtained from the power control algorithm, as well as that the user-centric approach generally outperforms the cell-free one.

    摘要: Dr Wasiu Popoola of the University of Edinburgh talks about his research into visible light communication and shares the results of his latest work examining the underutilised optical spectrum as a potential pathway to wirelessly connect devices. The research investigates the impacts of visible light communication (VLC) on the fundamental properties of energy efficiency, light quality and life expectancy of a light-emitting diode (LED) that is primarily designed for lighting or display. It aims to deliver the required approach for optimising VLC and safeguard the LED’s reliability, durability and emitted light quality.
