  • Comparison of A 1940 nm Thulium-Doped Fiber Laser and A 1470 nm Diode Laser for Cutting Efficacy and Hemostasis in A Pig Model of Spleen Surgery

    摘要: Partial and total splenectomies are associated with a high risk of substantial blood loss. Lasers operating at wavelengths strongly absorbed by water have the potential to improve hemostasis and cut while providing a narrow zone of thermal damage. The aim of this study is to compare a thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) emitting a wavelength of 1940 nm and a diode laser (DL) operating at 1470 nm for spleen surgery in a pig model. A partial splenectomy and spleen incisions were made in 12 animals using the two laser devices. The hemostasis was evaluated visually during surgeries. Post-mortem and histopathological evaluations were done on days 0, 7, and 14 following surgery. Neither TDFL nor DL caused bleeding on day 0 or delayed bleeding. On day 14, pale streaks at the site of incision were slightly wider after cutting with DL than with TDFL. Histological analysis revealed a carbonized zone with exudation and a deeper zone of thermal tissue damage on day 0. The width of the thermal changes was 655.26 ± 107.70 μm for TDFL and 1413.37 ± 111.85 μm for DL. On day 7, a proliferation of fibroblasts and splenocytes was visible, as well as a formation of multinucleated giant cells adjacent to the residues of carbonization. The zone of thermal damage was broader for DL (1157.5 ± 262.77 μm) than for TDFL (682.22 ± 116.58 μm). On day 14, cutting sites were filled with connective and granulation tissues with the residues of carbonization. The zone of thermal damage was narrower for TDFL (761.65 ± 34.3 μm) than for DL (1609.82 ± 202.22 μm). Thus, both lasers are efficient in spleen surgery, providing good hemostasis. However, TDFL produces a narrower zone of thermal damage, which suggests its better efficiency for spleen surgery, especially when performing more precise procedures.

  • Ex vivo and animal study of the blue diode laser, Tm fiber laser, and their combination for laparoscopic partial nephrectomy

    摘要: Background and Objectives: To evaluate the feasibility of using a novel blue diode laser (blue laser), a thulium fiber laser (Tm laser), and their combination as a directed‐energy surgical tool in laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN). Study Design/Materials and Methods: The blue laser emitting at 442 nm, the Tm laser emitting at 1,940 nm wavelengths, and the combination of them were tested. First, cutting and coagulative abilities of the lasers were characterized ex vivo on porcine kidney in air and CO2. Histological staining was performed to assess the efficiency of ablation and coagulation. Next, experimental LPN was performed on a porcine model at zero ischemia. Upper and lower segments of both kidneys were resected. Total operation time and resection time were measured; bleeding and carbonization were evaluated. Results: Ex vivo data show that laser‐induced ablation and coagulation processes do not differ substantially between CO2 and air environments. Histological analysis of ex vivo incisions demonstrates that the blue laser produced deep ablation with relatively narrow coagulation zone, whereas Tm laser was less efficient in terms of ablation but possessed excellent coagulative properties. Experimental LPN revealed that the blue laser provided fast cutting with minimal carbonization, whereas Tm laser induced slow cutting with strong carbonization. The combination of the blue and Tm lasers provided the most promising results demonstrating the highest resection rate, almost carbonization free resection surface and clinically acceptable hemostasis enabling LPN without the need for vessel clamping. Conclusions: The blue laser can be efficiently utilized in LPN. Furthermore, the combination of the blue and Tm lasers into a single modality may be beneficial for further development of successful laser‐assisted LPN.

  • High Power Fiber Laser Welding with Filler Material

    摘要: Industry today is continually challenged to improve quality, reliability, reduced cycle times, and improve the overall manufacturing efficiency. This is driving manufacturers across various market sectors to consider fiber laser welding and the possibility to automate their welding processes to improve consistency and part quality. Another driver is the changing workforce dynamics. It is hard to find or train skilled workers who can consistently and reliably weld aluminum, titanium, and high-strength nickel alloys. This is particularly true when welding with filler material where the base materials are subject to porosity and cracking during the welding process.

  • MAX phase based saturable absorber for mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser

    摘要: We presented an ultrashort pulse generation in an erbium-doped fiber laser cavity using MAX-PVA as a mode-locker. A thin film of SA was prepared by mixing PVA with Ti3AlC2 as a saturable absorber inside the laser cavity. The optical nonlinearity was also demonstrated, revealing a saturable absorption of 2%, a non-saturable absorption of 58.2%, and a saturation intensity of 1.63 MW/cm2. The excellencies of MAX-PVA was proven as it initiates ultrafast laser with a duration of 3.68 ps corresponds to a repetition rate of 1.887 MHz. The ease of preparation, together with its superior optical, physical, thermal, and mechanical properties, makes it a favorable SA for pulse generation in an all-fiberized laser cavity.

  • Effects of Cr2O3 active agent on the weld process dynamic behavior and joint comprehensive properties of fiber laser welded stainless steel thick plate

    摘要: In this study, the dynamic behaviors of metal vapor, plasma, keyhole, and weld pool during activating laser welding of stainless steel thick plates are monitored in real time by employing a novel "sandwich" method in combination with a high-speed camera system. Meanwhile, the welding quality of specimens is inspected and analyzed from the aspects like joint weld formation, mechanical properties, microstructure, and element distribution. The effects of Cr2O3 active agent on the welding stability and quality of specimens are explored. According to the results, adequate coating of active agent on the specimen surface can weaken and suppress the generation and drastic changes of metal vapor and plasma inside and outside the keyhole, increase the keyhole depth, improve the keyhole shape, weaken the oscillation amplitude of weld pool, and prolong the change cycles of keyhole and weld pool. Consequently, the stability of welding process is enhanced, the generation of porosity and splash defects is inhibited preferably, the quality of weld formation is improved, the weld penetration is increased, the grain structure in weld zone is refined, the width of heat affected zone is narrowed, and the joint strength and toughness are enhanced, without showing apparent change of the relative element contents in the welded joint. In conclusion, coating of Cr2O3 active agent on the specimen surface is effective in improving the welding properties of laser welded stainless steel plates.

  • Characterization of Continuousa??Wave Laser Heating Ignition of Ammonium Dinitramidea??Based Ionic Liquids with Carbon Fibers

    摘要: Ammonium dinitramide–based energetic ionic liquid propellants (ADN-EILPs) exhibit the advantages of high energy density, low toxicity, and handling safety, and are therefore promising monopropellants. Herein, we characterized the ignition of ADN-EILPs induced by CW laser heating in the presence of carbon fibers, clarifying the effect of laser power and suggesting that ignition reproducibility is influenced by the difference of ADN-EILP osmotic state in carbon fibers or carbon fiber configuration. The observed ignition behavior allowed one to conclude that (i) high-power CW laser heating causes the formation of bubbles on the surface, which disturbs further heating; and (ii) an Arrhenius-type relationship exists between ignition delay and heating rate, suggesting that the strategy of foreshortening ADN-EILP ignition delay by increasing CW laser power has certain limits.

  • Dissipative soliton resonance in a simple linear cavity Tm3+-doped double clad fiber laser with dispersion management

    摘要: We report on the investigation of large energy dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) pulse generation in a simple linear cavity Tm3+-doped fiber laser (TDFL), by using semiconductor saturable absorption mirror (SESAM) as saturable absorber (SA). This DSR TDFL is implemented by utilizing ultra-high numerical aperture 4 (UHNA4) fiber for dispersion compensation. With further dispersion management, the DSR TDFL can generate an average output power of 242 mW with corresponding pulse energy of ~61 nJ. Moreover, the soliton molecules mode-locked operation has also been demonstrated in this TDFL. Our results can provide an easily accessible way to develop large energy TDFLs.

  • Output energy enhancement in a dual-wavelength Q-switched fiber laser based on a ternary MoWSe2 saturable absorber

    摘要: As a novel ternary selenide-based transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD), few-layered molybdenum tungsten selenide (MoWSe2) was fabricated using liquid phase exfoliation method and applied in a Q-switched fiber laser as a saturable absorber. Dual-wavelength operation was achieved with the increase of pumping strength. The shortest pulse width and the maximum repetition rate were monitored to be 1.53 μs and 85.71 kHz, corresponding to a maximum single pulse energy and peak power of 151.4 nJ and 98.91 mW, respectively. The results indicate ternary MoWSe2 could be a promising candidate in Q-switched laser applications.

  • Dysprosium Mida??Infrared Lasers: Current Status and Future Prospects

    摘要: With growing interest in the mid-infrared spectral region, dysprosium has recently been revisited for efficient high-performance infrared source development. Despite historically receiving less attention than other rare earth ions, in recent years lasers utilizing the dysprosium ion as the laser material have set record mid-infrared performance, including tunability from 2.8 to 3:4 μm (in addition to 4:3 μm lasing), continuous wave powers exceeding 10 W, greater than 73% slope efficiencies, and even ultrafast pulsed operation. Herein, the unique energy level structure and spectroscopy of the dysprosium ion are examined and the major developments that have led to this resurgence of interest and subsequent record mid-infrared laser performance are surveyed. Also mid-infrared applications of emerging dysprosium lasers are highlighted, in addition to surveying the many opportunities that lie ahead.
