  • Tuning of carbon dots emission color for sensing of Fe3+ ion and bioimaging applications

    摘要: Herein, we report a facile one-step synthetic strategy for fabrication of three (blue, green and yellow) fluorescent color carbon dots (CDs) from tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). The as-synthesized CDs showed emission peaks at 450, 520 and 560 nm for blue, green and yellow color CDs when excited at 370, 420 and 460 nm, respectively. Using tomato as a carbon source, the fabricated three fluorescent color CDs showed good water dispersity and high quantum yield. The analytical performances of three fluorescent color CDs are evaluated by detecting Fe3+ ion in biofluids and iron tablets. Upon the addition of Fe3+ ion under optimal conditions, the fluorescence intensity of three fluorescent color CDs was quenched linearly over the range of 0.1 to 2.0 μM. This method opens a new analytical strategy to quantify Fe3+ ion in iron tablets and biofluids with high sensitivity. Further, the uptake of three fluorescent color CDs into HeLa cells was confirmed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Intracellular experiments demonstrated that the three fluorescent color CDs were effectively internalized the cells and show excellent biocompatibility and low toxicity, suggesting that the CDs can be used as good candidates for biomedical applications.

  • Fluorescent hollow mesoporous carbon spheres for drug loading and tumor treatment through 980-nm laser and microwave co-irradiation

    摘要: Hollow mesoporous particles for drug delivery and cancer therapy have attracted significant attention over recent decades. Here, we develop a simple and highly efficient strategy for preparing fluorescent hollow mesoporous carbon spheres (HMCSs). Compared with typical carbon materials such as fullerene C60, carbon nanotubes, reduced graphene oxide, and carbon nanohorns; HMCSs showed fewer effects on cell cycle distribution and lower toxicity to cells. Ten different drugs were incorporated into the HMCSs, and the maximum loading efficiency reached 42.79 ± 2.7%. Importantly, microwaves were found to improve the photothermal effect generated by HMCSs when combined with 980-nm laser irradiation. The cell killing and tumor growth inhibition efficiencies of HMCSs and drug-loaded HMCSs under co-irradiation with laser and microwaves were significantly improved compared with those under laser irradiation alone. After local administration HMCSs were only distributed in tissue at the injection site. HMCSs showed almost no toxicity in mice after local injection and could be completely removed from the injection site.

  • Rapid and green synthesis of fluorescent carbon dots from starch for white light-emitting diodes

    摘要: A simple and green synthesis of fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) was achieved by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method using potato starch as the carbon source. CDs with a maximum quantum yield of 2.46% were prepared by hydrothermal treatment of a 1 mg/mL starch solution at 220 oC for 30 min. Nitrogen doped CDs (N-CDs) were obtained under the same conditions using starch and ethylenediamine as the carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively, and their quantum yield was twice that of the undoped CDs. Both the CDs and N-CDs exhibit excellent water solubility and good thermal stability, emit blue fluorescence under UV light, but the fluorescent intensity of the latter is obviously higher than that of the former. Two white light-emitting diodes using the CD/starch composite and N-CDs as the phosphors emit yellowish white light and white light, respectively with xy coordinates of (0.38, 0.45) and (0.33, 0.35) in the Chromaticity Diagram of the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage, suggesting that they have great potential application in optoelectronic devices.
