  • Performances of Microwave Photonic Notch Filter Based on Microring Resonator with Dual-drive Modulator

    摘要: A tunable microwave photonic notch ?lter with ultrahigh radio frequency (RF) rejection ratio is achieved by using a dual-drive Mach–Zender modulator and a microring resonator. In addition, we dedicated to clarify the mechanisms of the microwave photonic notch ?lters based on a microring resonator under both overcoupled and undercoupled states and the performance differences between these two situations are investigated in detail. Furthermore, the experimental results show that the cancellation microwave photonic notch ?lter with ultrahigh RF rejection ratio can be achieved with both undercoupled and overcoupled microring resonators. Besides, an RF rejection ratio exceeding 50 dB was achieved for a microring resonator with an optical extinction ratio of only 4 dB, where a 46-dB enhancement from optical to RF response is obtained. Also, the bandwidth of the microwave photonic ?lter can tuned from 0.65 to 2.2 GHz by adjusting the coupling ratio of the ring resonator. Meanwhile, by tuning the wavelength of the optical carrier, the ?ltering frequency can be tuned and a tuning range of about 25 GHz was achieved. The implementation is much simpler and more economical compared with previous reports and has great potential in monolithic integration of microwave photonic ?lters on chip.

  • Scalable compact mode (de)multiplexer based on asymmetric Y-junctions

    摘要: A scalable asymmetric Y-junctions waveguide mode (de)multiplexer ((de)MUX) is theoretically proposed. The high-order mode in the stem is designed to be separated from the lower-order mode and evolves into the fundamental mode in the narrow arm, through waveguide widths optimization by effective index matching and beam propagation method. Within the wavelength range from 1450 to 1630 nm, the four modes (de)MUX with small footprint of 23 × 3.2 μm2 demonstrates the insertion loss and crosstalk of less than 0.14 dB and -16 dB, respectively. This scheme may be expanded to handle more modes in (de)MUX design.

  • A monolithic on-chip magneto-optical isolator with 3 dB insertion loss and 40 dB isolation ratio

    摘要: On-chip optical isolators constitute an essential building block for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Here we experimentally demonstrated a magneto-optical isolator monolithically integrated on silicon featuring 3 dB insertion loss and 40 dB isolation ratio, both of which represent significant improvements over state-of-the-art. The isolator is also fully passive and operates under a simple unidirectional magnetization scheme. Such superior performance is enabled through a three-way combination of a strip-loaded waveguide design, a compositionally optimized chalcogenide glass as the light guiding medium, and low-loss taper structures created via gray-scale lithographic processing. The device represents an important step towards a practical solution for on-chip isolation in PICs.

  • On-chip enhanced electro-optic Kerr effect for manipulation of optical orbital angular momentum modes

    摘要: Mode Division Multiplexing (MDM) technique using higher order Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) carrying modes through a channelized bandwidth provides enhanced capacity communication systems. Furthermore, encrypted channels via OAM based high-dimensional Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) improve the transmission rate and security. In such applications, mode-selective manipulation of the spatially distributed (here, OAM) modes is a significant function to implement MDM and QKD networks. This paper proposes a novel versatile-designed chip which is configured in a Ycut Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate (PPLN) photonic wire. This integrated optical device acts as spatial mode converter for data modulated on higher order OAM= ±2ˉh modes. The conversion is based on enhanced electro-optic (EO) Kerr effect via phase-mismatched cascaded polarization coupling interactions of decomposed guided modes in two successive PPLN sections. The high-purity (91%) and low-voltage (<14.6 V) of the proposed device enable its operation in compatible with applicable commercial modulators in OAM-based MDM and QKD systems.

  • Nanofabrication of SOI-Based Photonic Waveguide Resonators for Gravimetric Molecule Detection

    摘要: A silicon photonic microresonator comprising two curved vertical grating couplers and a single suspended Si nanowaveguide (NWG) is developed to investigate the giant enhanced Brillouin scattering in subwavelength NWGs caused by photon-phonon interaction. Finite element modelling based on COMSOL Multiphysics is conducted to optimize the critical device parameters (e.g., waveguide width, height, and length). As the smallest structures that need to be resolved are down to ~15 nm in size, electron-beam nanolithography is employed. In this case, dosage tests are carried out to minimize proximity charging effects during the nanopatterning of the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) surface, resulting in appropriate adaptive current area dosage distributions for the periodic gratings, couplers peripheral areas, and NWG, respectively. Furthermore, an enhanced inductively coupled plasma dry reactive ion etching (ICP-DRIE) process at a cryogenic temperature is used to realize smooth vertical sidewalls. Finally, buffered hydrofluoric acid (BHF)-based wet chemical etching is carried out to remove the buried oxide resulting in a suspended Si waveguide.

The possibility of increasing the speed of the ADC to potentially possible for optical data processing schemes is shown.

  • Vertically coupled InP/InGaAsP microring lasers using a single epitaxial growth and single-side lithography

    摘要: The experimental demonstration of vertical microring lasers requiring only one single epitaxial growth and two single-side lithographic steps is presented, in what is the simplest fabrication scheme for such devices published to date. The fabricated lasers show series resistance of around 20 Ω at forward bias, threshold currents at room temperature between 35 and 58 mA, and single-mode emission with a side-lobe suppression ratio higher than 30 dB. The measured optic output power level is of tens of microwatts. The approach allows the improvement of the optical features maintaining the simplicity of the manufacturing procedure.

  • Integrated electro-optic modulators in x-cut lithium niobate thin film

    摘要: Integrated optics is poised to revolutionize several data communication applications. The development of high performance electro-optic modulators is essential for the technology to be viable. In this paper, single-mode electro-optic modulators in x-cut lithium niobate thin film are designed, simulated, and analyzed. The single-mode conditions of lithium niobate ridge waveguides are analyzed in detail. The design parameters of Y-branch and separation distances between electrodes and ridge waveguides are optimized. The half-wave voltage of the electro-optic modulator with device lengths of 10 mm is determined. The half-wave voltage-length product is about 2.2 V·cm, indicating the efficient electric-optical modulation. This study is helpful for understand of electro-optic modulator structures in lithium niobate thin film, as well as for the fabrication of high-performance and multifunctional electro-optic modulation devices.

  • 5-Channel Polymer/Silica Hybrid Arrayed Waveguide Grating

    摘要: A 5-channel polymer/silica hybrid arrayed waveguide grating (AWG), fabricated through a simple and low-cost microfabrication process is proposed, which covers the entire O-band (1260–1360 nm) of the optical communication wavelength system. According to the simulation results, the insertion loss is lower than 4.7 dB and the crosstalk within 3-dB bandwidth is lower than ~?28 dB. The actual fiber–fiber insertion loss is lower than 14.0 dB, and the crosstalk of the 5 channels is less than ?13.0 dB. The demonstrated AWG is ideally suitable for optical communications, but also has potential in the multi-channel sensors.

  • 2D Layered Graphene Oxide Films Integrated with Microa??Ring Resonators for Enhanced Nonlinear Optics

    摘要: Layered 2D graphene oxide (GO) films are integrated with micro-ring resonators (MRRs) to experimentally demonstrate enhanced nonlinear optics. Both uniformly coated (1?5 layers) and patterned (10?50 layers) GO films are integrated on complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible doped silica MRRs using a large-area, transfer-free, layer-by-layer GO coating method with precise control of the film thickness. The patterned devices further employ photolithography and lift-off processes to enable precise control of the film placement and coating length. Four-wave-mixing (FWM) measurements for different pump powers and resonant wavelengths show a significant improvement in efficiency of ≈7.6 dB for a uniformly coated device with 1 GO layer and ≈10.3 dB for a patterned device with 50 GO layers. The measurements agree well with theory, with the enhancement in FWM efficiency resulting from the high Kerr nonlinearity and low loss of the GO films combined with the strong light–matter interaction within the MRRs. The dependence of GO’s third-order nonlinearity on layer number and pump power is also extracted from the FWM measurements, revealing interesting physical insights about the evolution of the GO films from 2D monolayers to quasi bulk-like behavior. These results confirm the high nonlinear optical performance of integrated photonic resonators incorporated with 2D layered GO films.
