    摘要: Deformable inputs offer users the ability to physically manipulate a device for system interaction. We combine flexible electronic technologies with human computer interaction to study how changing the form factor of digital devices can offer new interaction techniques to users. We introduce our research on deformable user interfaces by discussing bend gestures as a source of input, presenting our process to rapidly prototype flexible devices, and demonstrate three deformable user interfaces: bend passwords, bend for mobile games, and bend for vision impaired users. We show how flexible devices and deformable interactions can improve how we interact with our devices.

    摘要: Many field spectroradiometer user interfaces have been designed by industry without aligning them with typical scientific end-user requirements. We use two case studies to demonstrate the potential of streamlined graphical user interfaces, adhering to a number of generic software requirements for such applications. The software developed includes an Apple iPad based application to control an ASD Fieldspec spectroradiometer and a Java application to interface with the new autonomous dual field of view FloX/RoX fieldspectroradiometers and manage spectral data imported from their SD storage cards. Both applications are available for testing and usage. It is hoped that industry will be inspired by these case studies, improving the design of future implementations and making their instrument interface documentation freely available to the scientific community, allowing the implementation of specialized instrument control software.

  • Oxidized Metal Schottky Contacts on (010) β-Ga2 O 3

    摘要: Oxidized Ir, Pd, Pt, Ag, and Au Schottky contacts (SCs) were fabricated on (010) β-Ga2O3 single crystal substrates via reactive rf sputtering using an O2:Ar plasma. The use of in-situ oxidizing conditions resulted in SCs with very high rectifying barriers in excess of 2.0 eV for all the metals investigated, representing an increase of 0.4 to 0.9 eV compared to the corresponding plain metal versions. Both the plain and oxidized metal SCs showed evidence of Fermi Level pinning with their laterally homogeneous barrier heights lying in narrow ranges of ~1.3 to 1.5 eV and ~2.2 to 2.4 eV, respectively, with little correlation with metal work function. This was attributed to the influence of metal-induced oxygen vacancies and gap states at the SC interface, respectively. The very high barriers of the oxidized SCs resulted in excellent high temperature performance with ~10 orders of magnitude of rectification at 180 oC, indicating the potential of this technique for the fabrication of high temperature unipolar devices.

  • Chemical imaging of buried interfaces in organic-inorganic devices using FIB-ToF-SIMS

    摘要: Organic-inorganic hybrid materials enable the design and fabrication of new materials with enhanced properties. The interface between the organic and inorganic materials is often critical to the device’s performance and therefore chemical characterization is of significant interest. Since the interfaces are often buried, milling by focused ion beams (FIB) to expose the interface is becoming increasingly popular. Chemical imaging can subsequently be obtained using secondary ion mass spectrometry. However, the FIB milling process damages the organic material. In this study, we make an organic-inorganic test structure to develop a detailed understanding of the processes involved in FIB milling and SIMS imaging. We provide an analysis methodology that involves a “clean-up” process using sputtering with an argon gas cluster ion source to remove the FIB induced damage. The methodology is evaluated for two additive manufactured devices, an encapsulated strain sensor containing silver tracks embedded in a polymeric material and a copper track on a flexible polymeric substrate created using a novel nanoparticle sintering technique.

  • Improvement of electrical characteristics in regrown AlGaN/GaN MOSFETs by suppression of the residual interface charge

    摘要: In this paper, the influence of a regrown interface on the electrical properties of AlGaN/GaN heterostructure was investigated for recessed-gate MOSFETs fabricated by selective area regrowth. The electron mobility of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) on regrown AlGaN/GaN structures was degraded when the 2DEG was near the regrown interface. The regrown interface had high carrier concentrations and Si impurities that caused degradation of the electron mobility of the 2DEG. Unintentional carrier generation at the regrown interface was eliminated by ultraviolet (UV) treatment before regrowth. A regrown AlGaN/GaN MOSFET device was then fabricated using the UV treatment. The device exhibited good performance such as normally-off operation without hysteresis or leaks. Improvement of the electrical characteristics of AlGaN/GaN MOSFETs was thus achieved by suppression of regrown interface charge.

  • Quantifying Double-Layer Potentials at Liquid–Gas Interfaces from Vibrational Sum-Frequency Generation

    摘要: Vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy is demonstrated as a fast method to quantify variations of the electric double-layer potential ?0 at liquid?gas interfaces. For this, mixed solutions of nonionic tetraethyleneglycol-monodecylether (C10E4) and cationic hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16TAB) surfactants were investigated using SFG spectroscopy and a thin-film pressure balance (TFPB). Derjaguin?Landau?Verwey?Overbeek analysis of disjoining pressure isotherms obtained with the TFPB technique provides complementary information on ?0, which we apply to validate the results from SFG spectroscopy. By using a single ?0 value, we can disentangle χ(2) and χ(3) contributions to the O?H stretching modes of interfacial water molecules in the SFG spectra. Having established the latter, we show that unknown double-layer potentials at the liquid?gas interface from solutions with different C16TAB/C10E4 mixing ratios can be obtained from an analysis of SFG spectra and are in excellent agreement with the complementary results from the TFPB technique.

  • Unusual Electric and Optical Tuning of KTaO <sub/>3</sub> -Based Two-Dimensional Electron Gases with 5d Orbitals

    摘要: Controlling electronic processes in low dimension electron system is centrally important for both fundamental and applied researches. While most of the previous works focused on SrTiO3-based two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs), here we report on a comprehensive investigation in this regard for amorphous-LaAlO3/KTaO3 2DEGs with the Fermi energy ranging from ~13 meV to ~488 meV. The most important observation is the dramatic variation of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) as Fermi energy sweeps through 313 meV: The SOC effective field first jumps and then drops, leading to a cusp of ~2.6 T. Above 313 meV, an additional species of mobile electrons emerges, with a 50-fold enhanced Hall mobility. A relationship between spin relaxation distance and the degree of band filling has been established in a wide range. It indicates that the maximal spin precession length is ~70.1 nm and the maximal Rashba spin splitting energy is ~30 meV. Both values are much larger than the previously reported ones. As evidenced by density functional theory calculation, these unusual phenomena are closely related to the distinct band structure of the 2DEGs composed of 5d electrons. The present work further deepens our understanding of perovskite conducting interfaces, particularly those composed of 5d transition metal oxides.

  • Fabrication of IR windows grade zinc selenide by the reactive diffusive process

    摘要: The preparation of infra-red windows grade zinc selenide (ZnSe) by the reactive diffusion process between liquid zinc and selenium was the goal of present work. In this regards, high purity zinc and Se elements with a nominal composition of Zn50Se50 were capsulated in quartz ampoule and annealed in the temperature range of 550-950 °C. The wurtzite structure of zinc selenide phase was successfully obtained during annealing process beyond 750 oC. The hexagonal structure of zinc selenide was an unstable phase and totally transformed to the cubic construction by increasing the annealing temperature (950 °C) that is appropriate for infra-red windows application. The formation of zinc selenide phase during the annealing process has been performed by the development of an unceasing layer of porous zinc selenide compound in zinc/ selenium interface. The formation of porous zinc selenide can be associated to the different diffusion constants of selenium and zinc atoms in zinc selenide lattice based on the Kirkendall theory.

    摘要: In this paper we present a floor-based user interface (UI) that allows multiple users to explore a spatial augmented reality (SAR) environment with both monoscopic and stereoscopic projections. Such environments are characterized by a low level of user instrumentation and the capability of providing a shared interaction space for multiple users. However, projector-based systems using stereoscopic display are usually single-user setups, since they can provide the correct perspective for only one tracked person. To address this problem, we developed a set of guidance cues, which are projected onto the floor in order to assist multiple users regarding (i) the interaction with the SAR system, (ii) the identification of regions of interest and ideal viewpoints, and (iii) the collaboration with each other. In a user study with 40 participants all cues were evaluated and a set of feedback elements, which are essential to guarantee an intuitive self-explaining interaction, was identified. The results of the study also indicate that the developed UI guides users to more favorable viewpoints and therefore is able to improve the experience in a multi-user SAR environment.

  • B-scan wave outline analysis in numerical modeling of ground-penetrating radar response from layered rough interfaces

    摘要: Imaging of rough interfaces in a layered structure requires full understanding of the characteristics of their ground penetrating radar (GPR) echoes. In this study, a finite-difference time-domain computational model using a uniaxial perfectly matched layer boundary for GPR demining of layered rough interfaces is constructed. On the basis of this model, the numerical results of B-scan echoes from two-layered and three-layered rough interfaces with different degrees of roughness are obtained and compared with the profiles of corresponding rough surfaces. These results and comparisons highlight the relationship between the B-scan wave outlines and the profile of the layered rough interfaces. The effect of roughness of the interface on the B-scan echoes are analyzed, and the influence of the upper rough surface profile on the shape of the B-scan wave outline from the lower rough surface is discussed.
