  • Europium-doped boro-telluro-dolomite glasses for red laser applications: Basic insight into spectroscopic traits

    摘要: Naturally abundant minerals and lanthanide-doped synthetic boro-tellurite networks have become prospective efficient laser hosts because of the synergy between them. Driven by this idea, Eu3+-doped boro-telluro-dolomite (BTD) glasses were prepared via the melt-quenching method. The spectroscopic traits of as-quenched samples were analyzed though experimental and theoretical studies. The result from the derivation of absorption spectral fitting (DASF) model demonstrated the direct allowed transition in the glasses. Moreover, the photo-luminescence spectra of the sample containing 1.0 mol% of Eu3+ (BTD1.0Eu glass) revealed a prominent red peak at 611 nm (assigned to 5D0 → 7F2 transition in Eu3+ ion) with a large stimulated emission cross section (7.15 × 10?22 cm2) and a high luminescence branching ratio (61.5%). Furthermore, the attained CIE color coordinates (0.637, 0.363), which lie near the standard red hue (0.67, 0.33), together with high quantum efficiency (92.7%) affirmed the effectiveness of BTD1.0Eu glass as a potential red laser host.

  • Pr3+-Doped Strontium–Aluminum–Bismuth–Borate Glasses for Laser Applications

    摘要: The chemical composition of Pr3+-doped strontium–aluminum–bismuth–borate glasses with different concentrations, that is, (50 – x)B2O3 + 20Bi2O3 + 7AlF3 + 8SrO + 15SrF2 + xPr2(CO3)3 (where x = 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mol.%), have been prepared by the melt quenching technique. XRD, SEM, and EDS studies reveal the structural and amorphous properties of the prepared glasses. Different borate groups are analyzed by FTIR measurements. Judd–Ofelt (J–O) intensity parameters, Ωλ (λ = 2, 4, and 6) are calculated from the absorption spectrum to identify the nature of Pr3+ ions with their surrounding ligands. Using the J–O parameters, the radiative properties such as radiative transition probabilities AR and radiative lifetimes τcal are evaluated for various excited transitions of Pr3+ ions. Stimulated emission cross sections σpE and branching ratios βR for the emission transitions are evaluated by the photoluminescence spectra. The higher values of σpE and βR are identified for the emission transitions 3P0 → 3H4 and 1D2 → 3H4 of SABiBPr15 and SABiBPr01 glasses; these glasses are suitable for light emitting materials. The chromaticity color coordinates are calculated to find the average color of the emission spectra.

  • Growth and investigation of Sm3+-doped GLSO crystal for visible laser application

    摘要: In this study, a mixed Sm3+-doped Sm0.02Gd1.88La0.1SiO5 (Sm:GLSO) laser crystal was grown successfully by Czochralski method. The structure of the as-grown crystal was determined with X-ray diffraction. The as-grown crystal exhibits large absorption cross section (1.53 × 10?20 cm2) at around 405 nm, indicating that it can be pumped efficiently by the commercialized GaN/InGaN laser diode. Three Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters Ωt (t = 2, 4, 6) were calculated to be 5.177, 3.783 and 2.218 × 10?20 cm2, respectively. The stimulated emission cross section at 614 nm was calculated to be 0.471 × 10?20 cm2 and the fluorescence lifetime for 4G5/2 level was fitted to be 1.90 ms. All these results suggest that Sm:GLSO is very promising for realizing reddish-orange laser operation using the current commercialized GaN/InGaN laser diode pumping.

  • Manufacture and spectroscopic analysis of Tm<sup>3+</sup>-doped silica glass and microstructure optical fiber through the laser sintering technique

    摘要: We demonstrated Tm3+-doped silica glass rod was successfully manufactured by laser sintering technique and it was made into Tm3+-doped microstructure optical fiber by stack-capillary-draw method. Based on the absorption spectrum, the core glass shows outstanding spectroscopic properties through Judd-Ofelt analysis. Fiber core-cladding structure was preserved completely without any crystallization in the core. Besides, a self-built fiber laser at 1.95 μm produces 740 mW output power with a slope efficiency of 16.73 %. The results prove that our laser sintering technique is a promising preparation method to acquire fiber materials for 2.0 μm laser.

  • Standard and modified Judd-Ofelt theories in Pr3+-doped calcium aluminosilicate glasses: A comparative analysis

    摘要: The small energy difference between the fundamental level and the first opposite parity configuration of Pr3+-doped hosts is particularly challenging for the characterization of radiative transitions using the Judd-Ofelt theory, although modified versions of the theory have been proposed in the past for the investigation of praseodymium doped materials. Here, we present a detailed spectroscopic investigation on two sets of calcium aluminosilicate glasses, with 34 wt.% of SiO2 (CAS) and with 7 wt.% of SiO2 (LSCAS), doped with different concentrations of Pr3+ (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 wt.%). We use the standard Judd-Ofelt theory to characterize the glasses and the results and derived spectroscopic quantities — such as transition probabilities, radiative lifetimes and branching ratios — are compared to results obtained by the modified Judd-Ofelt theories. The analysis showed that the modified theories could lead to smaller values of root mean square deviations. However, a better agreement between experimental data and the standard theory was achieved when the derived spectroscopic quantities are taken into account. Moreover, the branching ratios of the 3P0 → 3H4 and 1D2 → 3H4 transitions were over 60% for both glass hosts, suggesting its potential use as solid-state laser devices.

  • Encyclopedia of Spectroscopy and Spectrometry || Optical Spectroscopy of Rare-Earth Ions in the Solid State

    摘要: The birth of optical spectroscopy as science can be considered from the time when in 1672 Isaac Newton published his famous paper describing the results of experiments where, using a glass prism, he decomposed a beam of sunlight into its optical spectral components ranging from blue to red. Since that time, scientists and engineers studied a broad range of phenomena associated with the interaction of light with matter, using the fact that light actually contains different spectral components. Within a field of optical spectroscopy, it is hard to underestimate the importance of optical spectroscopy of different optical centers in solid-state materials because of numerous scientific and industrial applications of such optical systems. These applications range from studying fundamental properties of impurity centers in solids, solid-state material properties, up-conversion devices, scintillators, and Faraday rotators to a creation of solid-state lasers.

  • Investigation of modifier effect on the spectroscopic properties of Sm3+ ions in binary boro?bismuth glasses

    摘要: Trivalent samarium (Sm3+)-doped boro?bismuth glass systems are prepared using the well-known melt quenching technique and studied their physical and spectroscopic properties. Theoretical optical basicity of the glasses are evaluated using the glass compositions. The optical absorption spectra are used to predict the optical band gap and bonding parameters of glasses. The ultra violet (UV) cutoff wavelength is increasing towards the higher wavelength side with increase in bismuth concentration. Judd-Ofelt parameters are obtained from absorption spectrum and are inturn used to estimate radiative properties for various excited states of the Sm3+ ions in boro?bismuth glasses. Luminescence decay curves of the 4G5/2 level in the Sm3+-doped boro?bismuth glasses are measured under 402 nm excitation. The decay times exhibit single exponential nature for lower concentrations (≤0.1 mol%) and tends towards non-exponential with increase in Sm3+ concentrations (≥0.5 mol %). The non-exponential decay curves of higher Sm3+-doped glasses are fitted to the Inokuti-Hiriyama model to know the nature of interaction for energy transfer between the Sm3+ ions. The chromaticity color coordinates for present glass systems are also evaluated and found that the luminescence color falls in the reddish-orange region.

  • Physical Properties, Ligand Field and Judd-Ofelt Intensity Parameters of Bio-silicate Borotellurite Glass System Doped with Erbium Oxide

    摘要: A glass series containing bio-silicate borotellurite (BSBT) doped with erbium oxide with composition of {[(TeO2)0.8 (B2O3)0.2]0.8 (SiO2)0.2}1-y (Er2O3)y, y= 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05 mol fraction were fabricated using the melt quenching technique. In this glass composition, the bio-silicate was extracted from the rice husk. The X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), molar volume, density, optical absorption and luminescence properties and excitation of the glass sample were investigated. Result of x-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the amorphous nature of the glass. The X-ray fluorescence (XRF) verified the achievement of 98.6% of silicate from rice husk. The density is found to be increasing from 3.845 g/cm3 to 4.142 g/cm3 with the increase in the concentration of Er3+. The molar volume is also found to be increasing with concentration of Er3+, but later decreases at 0.04 and 0.05 mol fraction of erbium. The decrease may be due to the tightly packed atom giving rise to a denser glass. The obtained values of the Racah parameters are derived from the absorption spectra region with higher energy. The bonding parameters are found to increase with the increase in the concentration of Er3+ from 0.002789 to 0.002835 while the Racah parameters and nephelauxetic ratio decreased. The increase in crystal field strength also shows a strong field sites. The Judd-Ofelt (J-O) intensity parameters are derived from the UV-Vis spectra and the results showed ?2>?4>?6 trend with the exception of Erbium at 0.04 mol fraction which showed ?2>?6>?4 trend. The appearance of higher values of ?2 and ?6 indicate the presence of a stronger covalency and lower symmetry around Er3+ ions. MacCumber theory was used to determine the stimulated emission cross section from the calculated absorption cross section for 4I13/2 to 4I15/2 transition. The glass displayed intense green and a week red emission under 380 nm excitation. The width of the gain is found to shift towards the shorter wavelength which proves that this glass system is a good material for photonics and laser applications.

  • Effect of B2O3 Content on Eu3+?Surrounding in The System SrO?x.B2O3 Containing Eu3+ Ions Prepared by Combustion Method

    摘要: The change of Eu3+? surrounding in the system SrO?x.B2O3 with various x values (x = 0.33, 0.5, 1) synthesized by combustion method was investigated via photoluminescence (PL) spectra and phonon sideband (PSB) spectra. From the analysis of PSB spectra, it is reasonable to suggest that when increasing B2O3 content the electron?phonon coupling strength increases due to the increase in the number of B?O? non?bridging bond. By using Judd?Ofelt (JO) theory for PL spectra of Eu3+ ion, the ?2 intensity parameter was calculated and it also shows the asymmetry of Eu3+? surrounding increase corresponding to the B2O3 content.

  • Photoluminescent and structural properties of color tunable trivalent europium doped SrGdAlO4 nanophosphors

    摘要: A series of Eu3+ ion doped SrGdAlO4 nanophosphors were prepared via solution combustion technique utilizing urea as a fuel. Structural properties of the tetragonal phase of the host/doped lattice belonging to the space group I4/mmm were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Photoluminescence spectra, decay curves, UV–Visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV–Vis DRS) and Judd–Ofelt analysis were utilized to characterize the photoluminescent properties. The radiative rates (Ar), branching ratios (Br) and intensity parameters (?λ) were estimated by Judd–Ofelt analysis. The optimal doping concentration of europium ions for SrGdAlO4 host lattice was found to be 20 mol%, above which concentration quenching was observed due to dipole–dipole interactions. CIE coordinates values lie in the blue region at lower concentrations of Eu3+ ions, which shifted towards white and then to reddish-orange region with higher concentrations of Eu3+ ions, suggesting the color tunable property of the synthesized nanophosphors. Lower value of CCT and color tunable phenomenon proved it as potential candidate for warm white light and phosphor converted white light emitting diodes (Pc-WLEDs) applications. The optical band gap of both host lattice (5.50 eV) as well as of 20 mol% Eu3+ doped SrGdAlO4 nanophosphors (5.26 eV) lie in the range of semiconductors which enhanced their areas of applications.
