摘要: This paper presents design, realization and measurements of a prototype of metasurface antenna radiating a sectoral beam with isoflux envelope. The prototype, developed for data-downlink applications from LEO satellites, is fed by a circular waveguide and can be associated to a turn table mechanism to provide the same Earth coverage as a conical isoflux beam, with the benefit of a higher gain.

A Low-Profile and High-Gain Frequency Beam Steering sub-THz Antenna Enabled by Silicon Micromachining
摘要: A very low-profile sub-THz high-gain frequency beam steering antenna, enabled by silicon micromachining, is reported for the first time in this paper. The operation bandwidth of the antenna spans from 220 GHz to 300 GHz providing a simulated field of view of 56?. The design is based on a dielectric filled parallel-plate waveguide (PPW) leaky-wave antenna fed by a pillbox. The pillbox, a two-level PPW structure, has an integrated parabolic reflector to generate a planar wave front. The device is enabled by two extreme aspect ratio, 16 mm x 16 mm large perforated membranes, which are only 30 μm thick, that provide the coupling between the two PPWs and form the LWA. The micromachined low-loss PPW structure results in a measured average radiation efficiency of ?1 dB and a maximum gain of 28.5 dBi with an input reflection coefficient below ?10 dB. The overall frequency beam steering frontend is extremely compact (24 mm x 24 mm x 0.9 mm) and can be directly mounted on a standard WM-864 waveguide flange. The design and fabrication challenges of such high performance antenna in the sub-THz frequency range are described and the measurement results of two fabricated prototypes are reported and discussed.

摘要: In this paper, we report on a novel all photonic FMCW radar system for detection and localization of multiple objects. This functionality is achieved by utilizing the self-sweeping of tunable external cavity lasers (ECLs) in combination with optical heterodyning for generating a millimeter-wave FMCW radar signal. In order to also localize the objects, frequency scanning mm-wave leaky-wave antennas (LWAs) are used. The LWAs enable beam steering via the FMCW signal for estimating the direction of arrival (DoA) of the radar echos. Overall, this approach yields very compact all photonic radar systems that do not require electrical oscillators or optical modulators. In addition, thanks to the LWAs, multiple objects can be localized within a single sweep and without any clock or control signals. Experimentally, the performance of a developed all photonic 60 GHz radar with a 10 GHz bandwidth is demonstrated for multiple object detection and localization. It is shown that the developed radar provides a range and DoA angle estimation error of <1 cm and ~3°, respectively. This is achieved without using any dedicated radar signal post-processing algorithms.

摘要: A simple parallel-plate waveguide (PPW) with a microstrip feed is proposed for efficient TM0 surface-wave (SW) mode excitation. In particular, by means of a truncated PPW and a printed sub-wavelength matching section, phase constants can be tailored and matched at discontinuities. This surface-wave launcher (SWL) offers an attractive microstrip feeding approach to LWAs and is an alternative to more conventional feeding networks that are typically employed for dielectric image guides (DIGs) and other planar structures because of its good performance, low cost and simple implementation. The proposed SWL has been designed to operate at K and Ka bands in a substrate with a relative permittivity of 10.2. In order to validate its performance in a LWA or for other planar applications, several scenarios have been designed and simulated: an end-to-end test circuit, a 1-D LWA and a DIG feeder. High efficiency and wideband operation have been obtained for all these structures. The proposed SWL with a microstrip feed can also be useful for other planar wave guiding structures at microwave and millimeter-wave frequencies.
