  • Simulations of some physical parameters of homologous series of nBT and nCHBT at 0.3–20.0 THz

    摘要: In this work, the terahertz (THz) absorption of homologous series of isothiocyanobiphenyls (nBT) and 4-(trans-4?-n-alkylcyclohexyl)isothiocyanato-benzene (nCHBT) are simulated by using the density functional theory (DFT) method. Numerical results show that absorption of the tested nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) varies up to 0.04 in the broad range of 0.3–20.0 THz and takes maximum value in the range of 9–14 THz. In addition, the values of molecular polarisabilities (αo, αe) increase with the increase in the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, while refractive indices (no, ne) decreases. The calculated birefringence (Δn) values for nCHBT are approximately twice as large as the birefringence value for nBT. It is crucial to examine these series of nematic liquid crystals at THz frequencies due to the role of soft matter in various switchable THz components.

  • Synthesis and Properties of Novel Thiophene-Based Liquid Crystalline Conducting Polymers

    摘要: Side-chain liquid crystalline polythiophenes were synthesised and the effects of the mesogenic units on the structure and electronic properties of the polymers were studied. The liquid crystal properties of the polymer films were studied using polarised hot-stage optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffractometry was used to investigate the effect of a magnetic field on the monomers and polymers.

  • Preparation, structure and optical properties of thermochromic liquid crystal compounds containing (?)-menthyl with selective reflection

    摘要: A series of new chiral liquid crystal compounds named MOPnB containing (?)-menthyl group has been prepared and characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR spectra. The thermal properties and optical textures were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Increasing the length of the terminal alkoxy group tended to decrease the clearing points and narrow the temperature range of the N* phase as well as favored the development of SmC* phase. Furthermore, Bragg selective reflection spectra of the compounds were measured by ultraviolet/visible spectrometer (UV/Vis). All compounds MOPnB (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) revealed the thermochromic property or selective reflection of visible light in the N* phase. Additionally, only MOP10B and MOP12B in the SmC* phase had the thermochromic phenomena and gave red-saffron color.

  • Influence of 4-[(E)-(4′-Heptyloxyphenyl)diazenyl]phthalonitrile on the Properties of a Cyanobiphenyl Liquid Crystal Mixture

    摘要: The mesomorphic properties of 4-[(E)-(4'-heptyloxyphenyl)diazenyl]phthalonitrile (7O-AB-CN2) were studied by polarization microscopy and DSC method. Liquid crystalline phase formation was observed over a broad temperature range of 92 to 181°C. The influence of 7O-AB-CN2 on the mesomorphic, dielectric, and optical properties of a liquid crystalline mixture of n-alkyloxycyanobiphenyls was examined. Enhancement of the dielectric anisotropy of the mesomorphic composition due to high polarity of 7O-AB-CN2 and its effective inclusion into the liquid crystalline matrix was revealed.

  • Solitons in discrete linear chains of chiral smectic liquid crystals with competing interactions

    摘要: Chiral liquid crystals exhibit in-plane spontaneous polarizations, however, in their smectic (Sm) phase the primary-order parameter is the tilt vector associated with molecular rotations around the long axis parallel to the molecular directors. These molecular rotations can lead to several distinct phases among which an incommensurate order with a domain-wall texture is referred to as soliton. In this study, the formation of domain walls in smectic chiral (SmC) liquid crystals is analyzed, with emphasis on the competition between an Ising-like symmetric intermolecular interaction, an anti-symmetric intermolecular interaction due to molecular chirality and an applied in-plane electric field. It is found that the anti-symmetric intermolecular interaction increases the width of kink structures in the domain wall at moderate intensity of the y-component of the applied in-plane electric field. Increasing the x-component of the electric field creates unstable condition for soliton formation irrespective of magnitudes of the symmetric and chiral intermolecular interactions. The stability condition for single-kink structures in the discrete molecular chain is discussed, by estimating the Peierls stress experienced by the single-kink soliton. Results suggest that chirality lowers the Peierls–Nabarro barrier, hence increasing the lifetime of single-kink structures in the discrete medium.

  • Novel lanthanidomesogens based on poly(ethylene glycol) cholesterol ether: Liquid crystal phase behavior and luminescence properties

    摘要: Biocompatible systems with luminescent properties attract significant interest as they are broadly used in bioanalysis and medical diagnostics. This paper describes new lanthanide liquid crystals based on an oxyethylated amphiphile with a cholesterol fragment (CholEO10). The complex of physicochemical methods (polarizing optical microscopy (POM), X-ray powder diffraction, FTIR-spectroscopy and luminescent analysis) was used to study liquid crystalline, structural and optical properties of these new biomesogens. Their phase behavior was compared with the behavior a lanthanum-containing analogue without a cholesterol fragment in its structure. A rigid hydrophobic fragment was found to exert a strong influence on lyotropic mesomorphism in aqueous media. The phase transition from a lamellar mesophase to a hexagonal one was observed with decrease of the CholEO10/La3+ complex concentration and addition of water. The study of luminescent properties of CholEO10/Ln3+ complexes, where Ln3+ is Dy3+, Tb3+, or Eu3+, revealed that their characteristic emission occurs in the yellow, green and red spectral ranges. Optical characteristics of new mesogens were estimated. Mesogenic CholEO10/Tb3+ and CholEO10/Eu3+ complexes demonstrate longer lifetime of their excited state as compared with the C12EO10/Ln3+/H2O complex.

  • Imine based chiral liquid crystals: Effect of varying the terminal substituent and orientation of ester linking unit

    摘要: New liquid crystalline compounds composed of three-benzene-ring molecular core comprising both the imine and ester linkage units, (S)-3,7-dimethyloctyloxy chiral unit at one of terminals and n-dodecyl/dodecyloxy group as other side chain have been synthesized and characterized to study the effect of varying terminal chains, the orientation of polar ester linking group and the presence of molecular chirality on mesophase properties of imine based calamitic compounds. The liquid crystalline properties of the compounds were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarizing microscopy and electro-optic methods. As a result of the strong effect of chirality of (S)-3,7-dimethyloctyloxy chain, all Schiff bases (imines) exhibit enantiotropic chiral smectic C (SmC*), chiral nematic (N*) as well as SmX phase just below the SmC* phase and blue phase (BP) appearing monotropically. The SmC* phase shows ferroelectric switching behaviour with PS values in the range 70–130 nC cm?2. The alteration of the n-alkyl tail with an alkoxy chain gives rise to a signi?cant increase up to 30 °C in mesomorphic transitions. The change in the orientation of polar ester linking group has no effect on the type and sequence of observed LC phase. As compared with (S)-4-(3,7-dimethyloctyloxy)phenol based imine derivatives (7a, 7b), the chiral nematic (N*) mesophase temperature range of (S)-4-(3,7-dimethyloctyloxy)benzoate based compounds (8a, 8b) signi?cantly broadened. Additionally, a decrease on the phase transition temperatures occurred with regardless of introducing n-dodecyl/dodecyloxy group as side chains.

  • Hole transporting properties of discotic liquid-crystalline semiconductor confined in calamitic UV-crosslinked gel

    摘要: The influence of polymer network on hole transport in discotic liquid crystal (LC) is investigated by the time of flight charge carrier mobility measurements. Composites of discotic LC and nematic reactive mesogen undergo UV-activated polymerization in columnar phase which yields the formation of chemical gels. Polarized optical microscopy allows us to observe alignment effect, whether scanning electron microscopy helps us to obtain characteristic imprint of polydomain columnar phase in created polymeric network. Hole mobility is improved, presumably due to the stabilization of the alignment of discotic LC. This type of composite is relevant for potential multilayer and flexible device applications.

  • Effect of doping by enantiomers with the different absolute configuration and phase sequence on mesomorphic, helical and electro-optical properties of highly tilted chiral anticlinic mixture

    摘要: The main objective of the present work is to contribute to better understanding of the effect of the absolute configuration and phase sequences of dopants on the self-assembling and physicochemical properties as well as on the electro-optical parameters of a specific liquid crystalline mixture with a broad temperature range of the antiferroelectric phase. In order to establish this effect, the mesomorphic behaviour, helical pitch length and its handedness, spontaneous polarization and tilt angle, as well as electro-optical performance for all design mixture, are determined. The results show a broad temperature range of the antiferroelectric phase and very low melting points in all mixtures. Mixtures doped with (R) enantiomers exhibit longer helical pitch lengths, lower values of spontaneous polarization and rotational viscosity, comparable values of a tilt angle but also longer switch off times in comparison to similar mixtures doped with (S) enantiomers. The doping by the enantiomers exhibiting isotropic-ferroelectric-antiferroelectric phase sequence reveals the most significant impact on properties of the base mixture. The knowledge gained will very advantageous while designing new multicomponent liquid crystalline mixtures exhibiting the chiral tilted smectic mesophases for application in surface stabilized modes with passive and active matrix drive for utilization in photonics and optoelectronics.

  • Self-assembled star-shaped liquid crystals based on 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene with pendant alkyloxylated azobenzene arms

    摘要: Designing and self-assembly of unconventional star-shaped mesogens or ‘hekates’ are of interest to materials science and molecular electronics. This work presents the synthesis of several symmetric trimeric liquid crystalline compounds comprising 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene (phloroglucinol) as central core. The liquid crystalline behaviour was induced by attaching three rod-like azo-aromatic semi-flexible units to the central core via esteric linkages. Based on differential scanning calorimetry and polarising optical microscopy, the mesophase stability mainly depends on the alkyl chain length. The compounds showed monotropic or enantiotropic behaviour, except the compound with nine atoms on the chain end which is non-mesomorphic. In addition to the synthesis and mesophase characterisation, the self-assembled structures and individual properties have been characterised by molecular simulations.
