  • Retrieval of Ionospheric Faraday Rotation Angle in Low-frequency Polarimetric SAR Data

    摘要: A low-frequency spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) working system, e.g., operating at the L-band or P-band, has great advantages of military target detection and biomass monitoring. Nevertheless, it is more susceptible to ionospheric effects compared with the higher frequency system. A trans-ionospheric wave propagation model is established in this paper to incorporate ionospheric effects on SAR signals. As one of the signi?cant distortion sources for the polarimetric SAR (PolSAR), Faraday rotation (FR) is mainly imposed by background ionosphere, and its spatial variation is discussed. FR estimators have been devised in succession to estimate FR angle (FRA), and various potential novel estimators can still be derived. But, from a viewpoint of theoretical expressions, the earliest estimator is bound to be the optimal one. Based on PolSAR real data, this mathematical conclusion is further validated via comprehensive performance analysis as to estimation bias and standard deviation rather than the existent root-mean-square principle. Finally, a step-by-step procedure of the FRA map is proposed and operated with an application of the airborne P-band PolSAR data. In particular, the ambiguity error of FRA estimates within a SAR observation is simulated and resolved. By processing the ALOS-2 real data, the spatial distribution of FRAs is retrieved and used to operate ionospheric total electron content soundings.

  • M-NL: Robust NL-Means Approach for PolSAR Images Denoising

    摘要: This letter proposes a new method for polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) denoising. More precisely, it seeks to address a new statistical approach for weights computation in nonlocal (NL) approaches. The aim is to present a simple criterion using M-estimators and to detect similar pixels in an image. A binary hypothesis test is used to select similar pixels which will be used for covariance matrix estimation together with associated weights. The method is then compared with an advanced state-of-the-art PolSAR denoising method named NL-SAR. The filter performances are measured by a set of different indicators, including relative errors on incoherent target decomposition parameters, coherences, polarimetric signatures, and edge preservation on a set of simulated PolSAR images. Finally, results for RADARSAT-2 PolSAR data are presented.

    摘要: In the context of linear discrete state-space (LDSS) models, we generalize a result lately introduced in the restricted case of invertible state matrices, namely that the linear minimum variance distortionless response (LMVDR) filter shares exactly the same recursion as the linear least mean squares (LLMS) filter, aka the Kalman filter (KF), except for the initialization. An immediate benefit is the introduction of LMVDR fixed-point and fixed-lag smoothers (and possibly other smoothers or predictors), which has not been possible so far. This result is particularly noteworthy given the fact that, although LMVDR estimators are sub-optimal in mean-squared error sense, they are infinite impulse response distortionless estimators which do not depend on the prior knowledge on the mean and covariance matrix of the initial state. Thus the LMVDR estimators may outperform the usual LLMS estimators in case of misspecification of the prior knowledge on the initial state. Seen from this perspective, we also show that the LMVDR filter can be regarded as a generalization of the information filter form of the KF. On another note, LMVDR estimators may also allow to derive unexpected results, as highlighted with the LMVDR fixed-point smoother.
