摘要: A method is sought to find the measurement volume instrument for particle measurement is sought. The study shows that the measurement volume depends on a combination of the optical homogeneity of the illumination light and the camera system. The result from a mix of illumination cases and positions shows that, if the true size and the background brightness are known, the measurement volume can be determined with an average precision of four percent using a dual term exponential fit. Using a lens with lower magnification increases the measurement volume since both the field of view and the depth of field increase. However, a larger field of view increases the required amount of light as well as the sensitivity to other optical errors.

摘要: Segmentation of partially overlapping objects with a known shape is needed in an increasing amount of various machine vision applications. This paper presents a method for segmentation of clustered partially overlapping objects with a shape that can be approximated using an ellipse. The method utilizes silhouette images, which means that it requires only that the foreground (objects) and background can be distinguished from each other. The method starts with seedpoint extraction using bounded erosion and fast radial symmetry transform. Extracted seedpoints are then utilized to associate edge points to objects in order to create contour evidence. Finally, contours of the objects are estimated by ?tting ellipses to the contour evidence. The experiments on one synthetic and two different real data sets showed that the proposed method outperforms two current state-of-art approaches in overlapping objects segmentation.

Development of a defect recognition algorithm for visual laser-induced damage detection
摘要: Laser-induced damage is defined as a permanent detrimental change in the characteristics of an optical element caused by a laser beam. This change can be observed by many different inspection techniques, of which optical and phase imaging microscopic techniques have superior sensitivity. However, such examinations conducted by human operators are relatively slow and subjective—so they cannot be used for online damage monitoring purposes, whereas automatic inspection systems have advantages in terms of sensitivity, reliability, and speed. In this paper we introduce a new method for the computer-aided recognition of damaged sites based on visual images taken from the sample surface by a CCD camera. The evaluation procedure is performed by a computer algorithm, which consists of exact, statistically established steps. It includes noise reduction by considering the statistical behavior of photon noise. Besides, it takes into account the spatial extent of a damage spot by nonlinear image filtering to separate damage-indicating intensity changes from random noise. This mimics the ability of the human eye to distinguish features from their surroundings. The evaluation algorithm is built of computationally less demanding mathematical operations to enable fast execution which is vital for monitoring at high repetition rates. The proposed method was tested on a sizeable dataset of images yielding 98.8% of damage detection efficiency. It was also compared to a generally used visual laser damage detection procedure, which has a success rate of 88.6%. This yields one order of magnitude reduction in the number of undetected damaged sites.

摘要: Quantitative grading of opals is a challenging task even for skilled opal assessors. Current opal evaluation practices are highly subjective due to the complexities of opal assessment and the limitations of human visual observation. In this paper, we present a novel machine vision system for the automated grading of opals—the gemological digital analyzer (GDA). The grading is based on statistical machine learning with multiple characteristics extracted from opal images. The assessment work-flow includes calibration, opal image capture, image analysis, and opal classification and grading. Experimental results show that the GDA-based grading is more consistent and objective compared with the manual evaluations conducted by the skilled opal assessors.

Smart Line Scan Measurement Systems
摘要: Current industrial machine vision applications mostly rely on PC-based image processing. Smart camera systems, which incorporate an image sensor and computing capabilities, were initially restricted to very simple tasks like barcode reading and interpretation. But as the computing capabilities of embedded systems increased, smart cameras are now able to handle a wide range of applications. Especially when machine vision has to be integrated into an existing automation system, this is often more easily done with a smart camera solution than with a PC-based vision system. Smart camera solutions are smaller, they generally generate less heat, and, therefore, can be a better choice if localized sorting tasks pass / fail decision making or process control is requested.

Parking Space and Obstacle Detection Based on a Vision Sensor and Checkerboard Grid Laser
摘要: The accuracy of automated parking technology that uses ultrasonic radar or camera vision for obstacles and parking space identification can easily be affected by the surrounding environment especially when the color of the obstacles is similar to the ground. Additionally, this type of system cannot recognize the size of the obstacles detected. This paper proposes a method to identify parking spaces and obstacles based on visual sensor and laser device recognition methods by installing a laser transmitter on the car. The laser transmitter produces a checkerboard-shaped laser grid (mesh), which varies with the condition encountered on the ground, which is then captured by the camera and taken as the region of interest for the necessary image processing. The experimental results show that this method can effectively identify obstacles as well as their size and parking spaces even when the obstacles and the background have a similar color compared to when only using sensors or cameras alone.

摘要: A novel prototype of a medical instrument for clinical diagnosis and research applications has been developed and tested. The device measures the ocular counter roll of an eyeball with a high level of precision using a mechanical measurement method (for head roll), and employs machine vision analysis to measure eye roll with respect to facial features. The prototype was 3D printed using an Objet 260 Polyjet 3D printer and tested in laboratory conditions.

Recent advancements in micro-crack inspection of crystalline silicon wafers and solar cells
摘要: The move towards in-line instrumentation quality assurance in photovoltaic industry has triggered new interest in development of novel methods and instruments for defect detection. Among the many tests that need to be carried out on silicon wafers and solar cells during the manufacturing process is the detection of micro-cracks. To date, the optical transmission method and luminescence technologies like electroluminescence and photoluminescence are popularly used by silicon wafer and solar cell manufacturers primarily due to their practicality and speed advantages. However, the increase in production throughput speeds and the recent change in the wafer sawing process where slurry-based sawing is gradually being replaced with diamond-wire sawing presents new challenges to the industries. This short perspective presents these new challenges and highlights breakthrough inventions in response to recent development. This article concludes by identifying some research opportunities that has emerged as a result of these recent developments.
