    摘要: A high efficiency TE01-TE11 mode converter is designed and analyzed based on coupled wave theory. The optimal configurations of a three-period converter is obtained to realize the optimal conversion at 30.5 GHz. The simulation results show that a conversion efficiency of up to 99.85% is got with a bandwidth of 4.4% over a converting efficiency of 95%, and the TE11 mode purity is also up to 99.9% at the output port.

    摘要: Mode converters are one of the most fundamental and indispensable components in the mode division multiplexing system. We design a new mode converter that is capable of converting between mode TE0 to TE1/TE2 or TE1 to TE1/TE2 with the performance achieved in both cases over 99% at the wavelength 1550nm. Not only conversion efficiency is high but also the effect of the unwanted modes is very small, it is always below 0.03dB. In addition, with outstanding advantages of the proposed structure such as large manufacturing tolerances and compact size will be good candidate for applications in on-chip MDM network.

  • Experimental investigation and design of sectoral waveguide <i>TM</i> <sub/>01</sub> to <i>TE</i> <sub/>11</sub> mode converter

    摘要: In this paper, an all-metal sectoral waveguide (SWG) mode converter has been proposed for TM01 to TE11 mode conversion, suitable for high-power application with high mode conversion efficiency and beam stability. Describing its operating principle, electromagnetic (EM) analysis has been carried out to observe the propagation behaviour in the different structure regions of the mode converter. A comprehensive design methodology, experimental investigation along with its beam stability performance has been presented. This design methodology has been typically demonstrated for 2.9–3.1 GHz frequency device; the performance of the designed device has been carried out using a commercial simulation code. To validate our design methodology and simulation, the results have been compared with experimental results and found in agreement. The proposed SWG mode converter has exhibited high conversion efficiency (98.4%) along with EM beam stability, suiting for the high-power applications.

    摘要: We explore the potential of metagrating for designing rectangular waveguide (RWG) TE10-to-TE20 mode converters via detailed analytical modelling. Such converters find their significance in applications like power combiners [1] and mode division multiplexers. Metagratings, on the other hand, are periodic arrays of polarizable particles (meta-atoms), capable of maneuvering electromagnetic wavefronts efficiently for advanced beam manipulation applications, such as beam splitting, and anomalous reflection and refraction [2-3]. This is achieved by tailoring the configuration’s degree of freedom such that energy is funneled exclusively to the desirable Floquet-Bloch (FB) modes, while quenching undesired FB channels by destructive interference. In this paper, we harness this physical mechanism to implement perfect mode coupling in a different electromagnetic system, namely, RWGs. The layout of the proposed configuration is depicted in Fig. 1(a) comprised of a capacitively loaded thin conducting wire placed at a position (x0, z0) in front of a perfect electric conductor (PEC) termination; TE10 mode is driven from the input port to excite the enclosed wire. In order to couple the incident TE10 mode into TE20 mode with unitary efficiency we need to fulfil two conditions: first, elimination of back reflected TE10 mode from the PEC via interference with the corresponding first order FB mode of the excited conducting wire; second, the net real power crossing any plane (z >z0) in the waveguide must be zero yielding passive and lossless design [2]. These prerequisites can be formulated rigorously by extending the analytical model presented in [3] to RWGs, enabling semi-analytical resolution of the available degrees of freedom, i.e. the position of the loaded wire (x0, z0) and the load impedance density (the printed capacitor width). To demonstrate this design concept, we have used it to devise such a mode converter at 14 GHz; without any full-wave optimization, coupling efficiencies larger than 97% were achieved. These analytical results are verified via commercial solvers (CST), showing excellent agreement with theoretical predictions [Fig. 1(b), (c)]. The proposed scheme has immense potential in providing a way to develop efficient waveguide mode transducers without resorting to complex structures like fin-lines, and E-plane and H-Plane bends [1, 4, 5].

  • Analysis and design of TEM-TE11 coaxial waveguide bend mode converters

    摘要: Two coaxial waveguide bend mode converters that transform coaxial transverse electromagnetic mode to TE11 coaxial waveguide mode are presented in this paper. Both converters are designed and optimized on the basis of the strictly derived mode coupling coefficients. Conversion efficiencies of both converters are over 99% and the power-handling capacities reach a gigawatt level. The combined dual-bend mode converter is fabricated and tested. The experimental results coincide well with the theoretical calculations and simulations, which demonstrates the feasibility of the designed converter.

  • Design and development of the W‐band corrugated waveguide mode converter for fusion plasma experiments

    摘要: In this paper, a W-band mode converter is designed using a circular corrugated horn and its detailed numerical study is presented. The proposed mode converter was fabricated, and the measured results are validated. The device converts fundamental mode (TE11) into a Hybrid mode (HE11) mode in a frequency range of 75 GHz to 105 GHz. The reflection coefficient is less than ?15 dB and a peak directivity of 24.5 dB is achieved. The corrugated horn also shows good mode purity. The measured gain of the device was found to be 18.05 dB. The designed mode converter will be useful in Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating system for fusion plasma experiments.
