    摘要: Optic disc(OD) detection and segmentation is one of the key elements for automatic retinal disease screening systems. This paper proposes an optic disc segmentation algorithm. The unified method based on low rank matrix recovery theory is used to make a significant detection. Then Hough transform is combined to obtain the final segmentation results. The proposed algorithm has short computation time and low complexity. It is robust to variable image illuminations and angles. The algorithm achieves the OD segmentation accuracy of 92.9% of the images on the MESSIDOR public dataset.

    摘要: Diabetic Maculopathy (DM) is one of the major problems of diabetes mellitus and it is one of the key reasons for the vision problem. It arises due to the leakage of blood from injured retinal veins. The development of DM is moderate and soundless and it is found in 10% of the world diabetic population. If diabetic maculopathy is not noticed in the underlying stage the effect this on macula is irreversible and can prompt vision loss. Therefore, screening of diabetic eye helps in finding diabetic maculopathy at the beginning stage which prevents the vision loss. In this review paper, the anatomy of the human eye and a brief overview of diabetes, diabetic retinopathy and diabetic maculopathy is presented. The literature review of various methods/techniques used for detection of DM in retinal fundus images and the performance metrics used to measure these methods are discussed in details. Issues involved in DM detection are also mentioned in this paper.

  • Automatic optic disc localization and segmentation in retinal images by a line operator and level sets

    摘要: BACKGROUND: Existing methods may fail to locate and segment the optic disc (OD) due to imprecise boundaries, inconsistent image contrast and deceptive edge features in retinal images. OBJECTIVE: To locate the OD and detect the OD boundary accurately. METHODS: The method exploits a multi-stage strategy in the detection procedure. Firstly, OD location candidate regions are identi?ed based on high-intensity feature and vessels convergence property. Secondly, a line operator ?lter for circular brightness feature detection is designed to locate the OD accurately on candidates. Thirdly, an initialized contour is obtained by iterative thresholding and ellipse ?tting based on the detected OD position. Finally, a region-based active contour model in a variational level set formulation and ellipse ?tting are employed to estimate the OD boundary. RESULTS: The proposed methodology achieves an accuracy of 98.67% for OD identi?cation and a mean distance to the closest point of 2 pixels in detecting the OD boundary. CONCLUSION: The results illuminate that the proposed method is effective in the fast, automatic, and accurate localization and boundary detection of the OD. The present work contributes to the more effective evaluation of the OD and realizing automatic screening system for early eye diseases to a large extent.

    摘要: Optic disc edema associated with macular exudates in a star pattern occurs with a variety of conditions. When optic disc edema with a macular star occurs in the setting of retinitis, particularly due to an infectious etiology, it is termed neuroretinitis. This chapter discusses the clinical pathway for evaluating and diagnosing patients with optic disc edema with a macular star, and includes a detailed review of the literature and reported cases.

    摘要: Glaucoma, one of the major causes of blindness, has been identified as a disease that causes the degeneration of the optic disc. An highly accurate automated detection of the optic disc (OD) has however been noted to be of great importance for the efficient diagnosis of the disease. This paper presents a study on an unsupervised approach usage of Haralick Correlation texture feature for the segmentation of optic disc in colored fundus retinal images. The grayscale and green channel of the colored fundus image are investigated. When compared with some methods in the literature, the experimental study of the proposed method achieved very high average accuracy rates of 98.59% and 98.36% using grayscale and green channel of the colored fundus image respectively on DRIVE database.

    摘要: The paper presents a supervised technique for the detection and localization of the optic disc (OD) in retinal images. The proposed processing technique is based on Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and Gabor filters (GFs). The algorithm of image patch processing and classification has two phases: the learning phase for the OD class definition and the testing phase for the patch processing and classification. Two features are used to check if a patch contains the OD: the magnitude and the phase values computed on the result of the convolution between the DFT of the patch and the bank of Gabor filters. Over 100 images from MESSIDOR database were tested and comparing with other similar works. The proposed algorithm gave better results in terms of accuracy of the OD localization for all types of OD.

    摘要: Detection of the optic disc (OD) and fovea in retinal images is an important step for automated detection of retinal disease in digital color photographs of the retina. Together with the vasculature, the optic disc and the fovea are the most important anatomical landmarks on the posterior pole of the retina. In this work, we presented a multi-stage region-based convolutional neural network for optic disc and fovea detection. In the first stage, standard faster-RCNN and SVM were employed for OD segmentation. In the second stage, the relative position information (RPI)-based faster-RCNN was proposed for fovea detection. The experimental result showed the average Euclidean distance with ground truth were 32.6 and 52 pixels for OD and fovea, respectively. The average Jaccard and dice index for OD segmentation were 0.8018 and 0.8873, respectively. The RPI-based faster-RCNN outperformed the standard network.

    摘要: This paper presents a new technique for segmentation of exudates in fundus images. This technique is based on Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and histogram based thresholding procedure. In this work, Optic Disc (OD) is eliminated using DWT from original green component image prior segmentation of exudates. This step aids to avoid the misclassification of exudates region. Histogram based threshold calculation procedure is introduced for segmentation of bright regions in green component image. Hard exudates are obtained after masking the OD region in segmented bright regions of the green component image. This technique was evaluated on images from DIARETDB0 and DIARETDB1 databases. The average sensitivity, specificity and accuracy achieved by proposed method are 0.7890, 0.9972 and 0.9964 respectively. Comparison with existing methods offered in the literature shows that the performance of proposed approach is significant.

  • Combined use of Doppler OCT and en Face OCT Functions for Discrimination of an Aneurysm in the Lamina Cribrosa from a Disc Hemorrhage

    摘要: purpose: In addition to retinal nerve fiber layer thickness measurements, the recently introduced AngioVue optical coherence tomography (OCT) offers corresponding layer-by-layer Doppler OCT and en face OCT functions, for simultaneous evaluation of perfusion and structure of the optic nerve head. We investigated the clinical usefulness of combined use of Doppler and en face Fourier-domain OCT functions of the AngioVue Fourier-domain OCT for discrimination of a disc hemorrhage and a disc hemorrhage–like atypical vessel structure located deep in the lamina cribrosa. Case report: We present our findings with AngioVue OCT on a disc hemorrhage and a spatially related retinal nerve fiber layer bundle defect in a glaucomatous eye (case 1). Both alterations were detected on en face OCT images without any Doppler OCT signal. We also report on an aneurysm suggestive for a disc hemorrhage on clinical examination and disc photography in a treated ocular hypertensive eye (case 2). The aneurysm was within the lamina cribrosa tissue at the border of the cup and the neuroretinal rim. This vascular structure produced strong Doppler signals but no structurally detectable signs on the en face OCT images. Conclusions: Combined evaluation of corresponding Doppler OCT and en face OCT images enables ophthalmologists to easily separate true disc hemorrhages from disc hemorrhage–like deep vascular structures. This is of clinical significance in preventing unnecessary intensification of pressure-lowering treatment in glaucoma.

  • Dynamic changes in optic disc morphology, choroidal thickness, anterior chamber parameters, and intraocular pressure during Valsalva maneuver

    摘要: Purpose: To investigate the effects of the Valsalva maneuver (VM) on optic disc morphology, choroidal thickness, and anterior chamber parameters. Methods: This prospective observational study included 60 eyes of 60 healthy subjects. The anterior chamber parameters, including central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber angle (ACA), anterior chamber volume (ACV), pupil diameter (PD), axial length (AL), subfoveal and peripapillary choroidal thickness, optic disc parameters, and intraocular pressure (IOP), were measured at rest and during VM. Results: VM did not have any significant influence on AL, subfoveal and peripapillary choroidal thickness, optic disc area, rim area, cup area, cup-to-disc area ratio, vertical cup-to-disc ratio, rim volume, cup volume, and nerve head volume measurements (for all; p>0.05). IOP and PD significantly increased during VM (for both; p<0.001). VM significantly decreased CCT, ACD, ACA, and ACV values (for all; p<0.001). Moreover, the optic nerve cup volume decreased and the horizontal cup-to-disc ratio significantly increased during VM (for both; p<0.05). Conclusions: VM may cause transient changes in IOP, optic disc morphology, and anterior chamber parameters.
