  • Design and development of a novel level transmitter utilizing lithium niobate (LiNbO3) Mach-Zehnder modulator for hazardous regions

    摘要: In the proposed work, a very low-cost transducer and a novel photonic based transmission technique have developed for liquid level measurement. Two copper parallel plates are used to measure the liquid level in the sensing tube. For transmission of the measured quantity to the remote location, electrical (1–5 V DC), as well as optical technique, has been used. A lithium niobate (LiNbO3) based Mach Zehnder interferometer has been used for the optical transmission. In the proposed method 40GHz, Photline made MXAN-LN-40 light intensity Mach-Zehnder modulator was used. The optical output was analyzed with the help of optical spectrum analyzer (MS9710B) as well as optical meter. Optical transmission was not affected by EMI interference and very advantageous in the inflammable regions. With the help of the proposed method, the sensitivity of 7.02 pF/cm. from the sensor and ?0.236 dBm/cm. from the modulator were achieved. The output of the sensor, signal conditioning, and optically transmitted data has been analyzed experimentally.

    摘要: This paper reports the design of a four-branch optical power splitter using MMI structure and taper output branches in III-nitride semiconductors. The numerical experimental is conducted using the 3D FD-BPM method. The results show that the optical power splitter has an excess loss of 0.27 dB and imbalance of 0.12 dB. It is also shown that the proposed design can be realized for C band range. This result opens the opportunity for the future device using this technology.

    摘要: This work presents the concept of a battery-free, sticker-like, device for a non-invasive health-monitoring sensor. The device consists of two functional blocks: an optical power-transfer block and an amperometric measurement block. The former accumulates power from a series-connected photovoltaic cell in a capacitor and intermittently supplies the power to the amperometric measurement circuit. This circuit is driven by powering pulses and displays the amperometric current as the durations of the light pulses from a light-emitting diode. The function of the circuit was successfully demonstrated through simulations, in which the equivalent circuit of an electrochemical glucose sensor was used as an example. The simulation results showed that the proposed device would work as expected for a variety of glucose concentrations at an oxidation voltage of 0.8 V.

    摘要: Recently, phosphor films have been widely used in display, illumination and other fields. Methods of fabricating structures on phosphor films to enhance their optical properties have attracted great attention in academia and industry. Current methods to fabricate a structured film are mainly by imprinting techniques. However, crystalline silicon or a patterned sapphire substrate are applied to the transfer substrate, which is cumbersome and expensive. This paper describes a track-etching mold, prepared by bombarding a polycarbonate film (PC) with high-speed particles to form phosphor film with microporous structure,which also has a transfer effect. The process is simple and efficient. Simultaneously, the micro-pillar structure PDMS film (MPS-PDMS film) transferred by the PC film has a discrete distribution of micro-pillar structures. Their optical performance was measured and the haze was improved by 12.06% compared with the unstructured PDMS film (US- PDMS film). Subsequently, the micro-dimples structure quantum dots film (MDS-QDs film) was secondarily fabricated using the MPS-PDMS film to have a dimple structure. The red optical power of MDS-QDs film was improved by 7.7% as compared with the unstructured quantum dot film (US-QDs film). Therefore, the structural QD films shows great potential value in luminance and display.

  • Light trapping for photovoltaic cells used for optical power transmission

    摘要: Photovoltaic (PV) cells used for optical power transmission convert laser light incident from limited directions to electricity. This illumination condition is in contrast to that for solar cells. A combination of an angular selective filter consisting of a dielectric multilayer on the front surface and a diffuse reflector on the rear surface significantly traps both the incident laser light into and radiation from the PV cell. This light trapping effect can improve the monochromatic conversion efficiency of a GaAs PV cell by 9% (absolute) compared with that for the ×4n2 trapping, under 872 nm and 1 W cm?2 laser illumination.

    摘要: In this paper, the autoconvolution method was investigated to determine the position of the longitudinal axis of the photonic crystal fiber and to determine the center of the mode field in the cross section. Knowing the center of the PCF mode field, one can determine the cross section in which the diameter of the mode field will be maximal. This allows a more precise positioning of two identical PCF during connection. The proposed method allows improving the quality of the positioning of the PCF by transverse, angular, longitudinal displacements, and also by the mutual angle of rotation of the connected PCFs.

  • Multiport optical power splitter design based on coupled-mode theory

    摘要: We proposed a multiport T-shaped 1 x 8 balanced optical power splitter design based on asymmetric vertical silicon slot waveguides working on the principle of coupled-mode theory (CMT). The scheme of the power splitter is unique which offers strong field confinement of TE-polarized light and delivers the light to four ports each on two opposite side of the chip. By shifting the slot towards the outer sideline of the bend, the bending losses are reduced to 80% as compared to standard symmetric slot waveguide.

  • Intensity-modulated Sagnac loop temperature sensor setup

    摘要: In this article, the novel low-cost and simple intensity-modulated Sagnac loop based temperature sensor setup is presented. The sensor head consists of a short length of polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF), which is spliced to a single-mode fiber optic coupler. Due to the short section of PMF, the spectrum has wide separation between adjacent interferometer dips. This idea ensures that transmission of a broadband light source has different losses after propagation through Sagnac loop whether temperature changes and causes shift of interferometer dips. Therefore, tracking of wavelength shift of interferometer dip is not required in this setup as it relies on direct optical power measurement. Instead of using spectral analysis instruments, we present the novel intensity-modulated optical fiber temperature sensor based on Sagnac loop created of short section of PMF. This particular sensor was experimentally investigated for a temperature range of 25-50.5°C and exhibited the sensitivity of 0.066 mW/1°C with resolution of 0.34°C. The setup could be easily applied in order to create fiber optic sensor network for temperature monitoring.

  • Experimental study on cooling of high-power laser diode arrays using hybrid microchannel and slot jet array heat sink

    摘要: In this study, a hybrid microchannel and slot jet array heat sink is designed and fabricated to achieve a better thermal performance of the high-power laser diode arrays. A standard commercial laser bar with wavelength of 808 nm is packaged on the heat sink and experiments are performed to assess the cooling performance of the hybrid heat sink. In the experiments, the forward voltage method is used to measure the chip temperature and the structure function method is applied to obtain the thermal resistance of the heat sink. Using the deionized water as coolant, the heat sink deals with a heat flux of up to 506 W/cm2 and the thermal resistance of the heat sink is only 0.23 K/W when the flow rate is 0.8 L/min (The average jet velocity is 13.3 m/s). The optical power can be up to 135.5 W corresponding to the wall plug efficiency of 64.2%. Compared with the published solutions related to cooling similar laser chips, the thermal resistance reduces by over 15%, indicating that this hybrid heat sink is an interesting solution to improve the cooling of the high-power laser diode arrays.

    摘要: Power-over-Fiber (PoF) is a very promising technique and recent technology development makes it applicable. However the cost of PoF is high since high powered laser, photovoltaic power converters and special optical fibers are used. In this paper the detailed efficiency evaluation of optical power supply system based on standard, low cost telecom components are given. Different semiconductor materials were characterized to build the most efficient supply system. The highest conversion efficiency of photodiode equal to 26.2% and the efficiency of whole system equal to 13% is achieved.
