  • Investigation of UV Irradiation Response of Optical Fiber Sensors for Radiation Dosimetry

    摘要: In this work, the investigation of radiation response for modified cladding multimode optical fibres exposed to UV radiation (N2 Laser) in terms of Radiation-Induced Attenuation (RIA) had been presented. The optical fibres were tapered to 65 and 60 μm then dipped into (5wt % of Germanium to modify the cladding region. By exposing these fibres to different energies of UV irradiation, the transmission spectra were online monitored and recorded every ten seconds to analyze the attenuation changes with the increasing of the radiation dose. The experimental results revealed two points: the first point is that the sensor undergoes the RIA effect which is resulted from the interaction between the radiation and the dopant material, and the second point shows that the sensitivity increases as the diameter of the sensor decrease. From these outcomes, we can conclude that such a sensor can be employed in different dosimetry applications.

    摘要: In this paper, multi-sensor is proposed based on the evanescent field coupling effect on two optical fibers. The waveguide aligned side by side were numerically simulated using the beam propagation method (OptiBPM) simulator. Optical rays are confined within a waveguide by total internal reflection and closely visualized at the waveguide’s cladding interface via electromagnetic wave theory model. Distinct distances between optical fibers are considered for optical power loss and the sensor operation is explained in terms of these effects. The coupling coefficient express the products between the evanescent part of the field and the propagative part guided in the core. The performance of the device is found satisfactory to build higher order multi-sensor.

  • Performance of Distributed Optical Fiber Sensors (DOFS) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) in the monitoring of RC structures

    摘要: Distributed Optical Fiber Sensors (DOFS) are strain measuring tools whose potential related to the civil engineering field has been discovered in the latest years only. A unique utility lies in the possibility of bonding these extremely thin sensors to steel reinforcement bars which will later be embedded in concrete elements (RC) in order to monitor its mechanical strains. The present paper presents the results of an experimental campaign that saw the tensing of two RC tensile members (ties) with DOFS-instrumented steel rebars providing strain readings every 7.5mm. Their cracking behavior allows to gain insight on the steel rebar’s strain profile when surrounded by cracking concrete. The described results are novel as measurements that are accurate, completely distributed, experimentally extracted, both before and after concrete cracking, have been impossible up until now. The internal strain measurements are additionally integrated with an external Digital Image Correlation (DIC) monitoring which provides data on the displacements and strains of the members’ surfaces. The present research represents the beginning of an in-depth experimental campaign aimed at providing reinforcement strain data for multiple loaded RC ties encompassing different geometrical features (concrete cover, reinforcement ratio, bar diameter).

  • Polymer Optical Fiber Sensor System for Multi Plane Bending Angle Assessment

    摘要: In this paper, a polymer optical fiber (POF) sensor system for angle estimation in multi-planar movements is proposed. The sensor system comprises of three intensity variation-based POF sensor multiplexed via a time multiplexing technique with the side-coupling of the light sources. A theoretical analysis is performed for the sensor system as well as a numerical analysis using the finite element method (FEM) in order to investigate the cross-sensitivity for multi planar movement and the effect of the sensors positioning on the sensor sensitivity due to the stress distribution on the fiber. Such analyses indicate the possibility of not only increasing the sensor accuracy on single plane angle estimation by combining the responses of two sensors, but also the possibility of obtaining an angle estimation combining the sensor responses for multi plane movements. Then, an experimental analysis is performed on the sensor system, which corroborates the numerical and analytical responses and enable a threefold error reduction when two sensors are used on the single plane estimation instead of one. In addition, errors as low as 1.15% in the best case and 4.30% in the worst case were obtained on the tests with multi plane movement. The results obtained in this paper indicate the possibility of using this sensor system on the shape reconstruction applications in structural health monitoring, robotics and movement analysis.

  • Encyclopedia of Maritime and Offshore Engineering || Optical Fiber Sensors for Marine Structural Condition Monitoring

    摘要: Effective structural condition monitoring, and the action from it, is likely to result in significant economic savings from a better determination of structural integrity and use of the structure itself. It is also essential for the enhanced prediction of structural service lifetimes based on real-time measurement data obtained. Fiber optic-based sensors have shown real promise for structural condition monitoring, due to the attractive features they possess, such as small size, geometric versatility, multiplexing capability, and resistance to corrosive and hazardous environments. As a result, these sensors have been explored widely for monitoring a wide range of structural materials, including composites, concrete, limestones, carbon/aluminum, and metals (Scott et al., 2013; Sun et al., 2012; Nguyen et al., 2014; Kerrouche et al., 2009a), and the key parameters that have been measured include temperature, strain, vibration, relative humidity, pH, and chlorides, and so on.

  • A Review: Evolution and Diversity of Optical Fibre Plasmonic Sensors

    摘要: The purpose of this review is to bring to the attention of the wider research community how two quite different optical sensory techniques were integrated resulting in a sensor device of exceptional sensitivity with wide ranging capability. Both authors have collaborated over a 20 year period, each researching initially surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and optical fibre Bragg grating devices. Our individual research, funded in part by EPSRC and industry into these two areas, converged, resulting in a device that combined the ultra-sensitive working platform of SPR behavior with that of fibre Bragg grating development, which provided a simple method for SPR excitation. During this period, they developed a new approach to the fabrication of nano-structured metal coatings for plasmonic devices and demonstrated on fibre optic platform, which has created an ultra-sensitive optical sensing platform. Both authors believe that the convergence of these two areas will create opportunities in detection and sensing yet to be realised. Furthermore, giving the reader “sign-post” research articles to help to construct models to design sensors and to understand their experimental results.

  • Lossy Mode Resonance Generation on Sputtered Aluminum-Doped Zinc Oxide Thin Films Deposited on Multimode Optical Fiber Structures for Sensing Applications in the 1.55 μm Wavelength Range

    摘要: In this work, we demonstrated lossy mode resonance (LMR) generation in optical fiber structures based on multimode fibers coated with aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) films. AZO thin films were deposited by using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. In order to exhibit the usefulness of the LMR effect for sensing applications in optical fiber based systems, the deposition conditions of the AZO film coatings were set to obtain the second LMR order within the 1.55 μm wavelength range. An optical transmission configuration setup was used to investigate the LMR effect on fiber structures based on the use of no-core and cladding-removed multimode fibers coated with AZO films synthesized from metallic sputtering targets with different proportions of Zn:Al, 92:8% and 98:2%, at atomic concentrations. The optical and electrical/chemical features of the AZO films were characterized with UV–vis and XPS spectroscopy, respectively. The optical response of the proposed sensing configuration to refractive index (RI) variations was experimentally demonstrated. For the best approach, the sensitivity of wavelength displacement to RI variations on the liquid surrounding media was found to be 1214.7 nm/RIU.

  • Temperature extraction for Brillouin optical fiber sensing system based on extreme learning machine

    摘要: The use of extreme learning machine (ELM) network to extract temperature distribution from the measured Brillouin gain spectra (BGSs) along the sensing fiber obtained by Brillouin optical fiber sensors is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. Compared with conventional curve fitting method (CFM), ELM network trained by a set of ideal BGSs can extract temperature information directly from the measured BGSs obtained by Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer (BOTDR) system without the need of determining Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) and converting BFS to temperature. The BGSs linewidth is taken into account to construct the ideal BGSs by using Pseudo-Voigt curve for ELM training. The performance of ELM is analyzed in detail and compared with that of widely-used Lorentzian CFM, and the experiment results show that ELM can provide higher accuracy even at large frequency scanning step and faster processing speed. Therefore, the proposed ELM approach is feasible and effective for temperature extraction in Brillouin optical fiber sensing system.

  • Optical Fiber-Based Sensing, Measuring, and Implementation Methods for Slope Deformation Monitoring: A Review

    摘要: Slope instabilities are a common occurrence in hilly areas, mine, and dam region, which bring a grave threat to the safety of transportation business and human life. The effective slope monitoring methods and instruments can provide information on the current deformation and historical trends, which is important scientific information for researchers to analyze slope stability and provide a timely warning to the public. Optical fiber sensors (OFS) have attracted many researchers to explore due to their have unique advantages in comparison with conventional electronic based sensing technologies, including immunity to electromagnetic interference, remote transmission, easy integration and high sensitivity. This paper presents an overview of the latest development and application of OFS based slope deformation monitoring from two aspects: 1) Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based sensing and monitoring technology; 2) Distributed optical fiber sensors (DOFS) Brillouin Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (BOTDR) and Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA) for slope monitoring. Meanwhile, current challenges in implementing the OFS-based slope monitoring technology are discussed.

  • Optical Fiber Specklegram Sensors for Mechanical Measurements: a Review

    摘要: This paper presents a review of FSS technology. The operation principle and main characteristics of specklegram are presented and the applications of FSSs are thoroughly discussed. In addition, advances in microelectronics, machine learning, material processing for new optical fibers and their relation with FSS are also discussed. These new developments on correlated areas can give rise for a new generation of sensors with advantageous features such as lower cost, easy connectivity, higher degree of customization and better performance.
