  • Soft optoelectronic sensory foams with proprioception

    摘要: In a step toward soft robot proprioception, and therefore better control, this paper presents an internally illuminated elastomer foam that has been trained to detect its own deformation through machine learning techniques. Optical fibers transmitted light into the foam and simultaneously received diffuse waves from internal reflection. The diffuse reflected light was interpreted by machine learning techniques to predict whether the foam was twisted clockwise, twisted counterclockwise, bent up, or bent down. Machine learning techniques were also used to predict the magnitude of the deformation type. On new data points, the model predicted the type of deformation with 100% accuracy and the magnitude of the deformation with a mean absolute error of 0.06°. This capability may impart soft robots with more complete proprioception, enabling them to be reliably controlled and responsive to external stimuli.

  • Tests and Foreseen Developments of Fibered-OSLD Gamma-Heating Measurements in Low-Power Reactors

    摘要: In this paper, test measurements of a fibered optically stimulated luminescent dosimeter (OSLD) system performed during a dedicated experimental phase in EOLE zero-power reactor are presented. The measurement setup consists of an OSLD crystal connected onto the extremity of an optical fiber and a laser stimulation system, manufactured by the CEA/LIST, Saclay, France. The OSL sensor is remotely stimulated via an optical fiber using a diode-pumped solid-state laser. The OSL light is collected and guided back along the same fiber to a photomultiplier tube through appropriate optical filters. OSL signals are corrected for background noise and integrated to provide the absorbed doses thanks to calibration coefficients. The light stimulation also fully bleaches the crystal (reusable for the next measurement). Results obtained using this system are compared to usual gamma-heating measurement protocol using OSLD pellets. Both measurement processes were calibrated to ensure the comparison of absolute doses in gray at the same positions in the core. The presence of induced radioluminescence in the OSLD during the irradiation was also observed and could be used to monitor the gamma flux. The feasibility of remote measurements is achieved, whereas further developments could be conducted to improve this technique since the readout procedure still requires to withdraw the OSLD off the gamma flux (hence from the core) on account of the dose rate (around a few Gy·h?1), and the readout time remains quite long for online applications. Several improvements are foreseen and will be tested in the forthcoming years.

  • Characterization of distributed Brillouin sensors based on elliptical-core two-mode fiber

    摘要: Distributed Brillouin sensors based on the intra- and intermodal stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) of the LP01 and LP11 guided modes in an elliptical-core two-mode fiber (e-core TMF) are investigated and characterized. The strain and temperature dependence of the Brillouin frequency (νB) for each intra- and intermodal SBS is measured, and the feasibility of distributed sensors based on the e-core TMF is tested. As an application of intermodal SBS Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) with an LP01 mode probe and LP11 mode pump waves is demonstrated which can simultaneously measure the distribution of νB and the propagation loss of the LP11 mode. The strain and temperature coefficients of the double-peak Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) observed in the intramodal SBS of the LP11 mode are separately measured for each peak by applying Brillouin optical correlation domain analysis (BOCDA) with a differential measurement scheme. Experimental results show that e-core TMF can be used as a robust platform for distributed Brillouin sensors with strain and temperature coefficients of νB in the intra- and intermodal SBS very close to each other, with a discrepancy less than 1%.
