摘要: An ultrafast electro-optical amplified switch based on chip-on-carrier semiconductor optical amplifier with high optical contrast (33 dB) is presented. Switching times up to 115 ps with small overshoot were achieved by using the multi-impulse step injected current technique. These results are compared with previous preimpulse step injected current technique, and achieve a reduction of the inherent, post switching gain fluctuations without worsening the switching times. In addition, pulse formats for controlling such a kind of electro-optical switches are numerically analyzed and compared with experiments.

摘要: We demonstrate error-free 100-Gb/s optical packet switching with low power consumption by using a combination of a label processor and 8 × 8 broadcast-and-select (B&S) optical switch. To achieve energy-ef?cient label processing, an optical-trigger-pulse generator that consumes energy only for a very short duration is realized, whereas the optoelectronic serial-to-parallel converter used to interface the fast label bits to a slow CMOS processor has been improved to operate with a reduced trigger pulse energy of 0.35 pJ. Moreover, the electro-absorption-modulator-based B&S optical switch is signi?cantly enhanced by introducing a surface ground electrode for eliminating electrical crosstalk and integrated spot-size converters with easy fabrication process. The total power consumption of the full 8 × 8 optical packet switch is estimated to be as low as 27.3 W or 3.4 W/100-Gb/s port.

Energy Efficient Switching Technique for High-Speed Electro-Optical Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers
摘要: The analysis and performance of an efficient microwave coupler using asymmetrical impedance matching are introduced aiming high-speed electro-optical space switches employing a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). Through the reduction of the step matching resistor, its parasitic, and the optimization of the injected electrical switching signals, the proposed coupler was able to significantly reduce the SOA energy consumption while maintaining its ultrafast state transition with reduced transient behavior. Overall, the SOA-based switching action achieved guard times below 500 ps with overshoots close to 0% while operating with low bias currents and short pre-impulses, with a driver power close to 135 mW and energy consumption of 3.4 pJ/bit.

An azimuthally-modified linear phase grating: Generation of varied radial carpet beams over different diffraction orders with controlled intensity sharing among the generated beams
摘要: Diffraction gratings are important optical components and are used in many areas of optics such as in spectroscopy. A diffraction grating is a periodic structure that splits and diffracts the impinging light beam into several beams travelling in different directions. The diffracted beams from a grating are commonly called diffraction orders. The directions of the diffraction orders depend on the grating period and the wavelength of the impinging light beam so that a grating can be used as a dispersive element. In the diffraction of a plane wave from a conventional grating, the intensities of diffracted beams decrease with increasing order of diffraction. Here, we introduce a new type of grating where in the diffraction of a plane wave, the intensity of a given higher order diffracted beam can be higher than the intensity of the lower orders. We construct these gratings by adding an azimuthal periodic dependency to the argument of the transmission function of a linear phase grating that has a sinusoidal profile and we call them azimuthally-modified linear phase gratings (AMLPGs). In this work, in addition to introducing AMLPGs, we present the generation of varied radial carpet beams over different diffraction orders of an AMLPG with controlled intensity sharing among the generated beams. A radial carpet beam is generated in the diffraction of a plane wave from a radial phase grating. We show that for a given value of the phase amplitude over the host linear phase grating, one of the diffraction orders is predominant and by increasing the value of the phase amplitude, the intensity sharing changes in favor of the higher orders. The theory of the work and experimental results are presented. In comparison with the diffraction of a plane wave from radial phase gratings, the use of AMLPGs provides high contrast diffraction patterns and presents varied radial carpet beams over the different diffraction orders of the host linear phase grating. The resulting patterns over different diffraction orders are specified and their differences are determined. The diffraction grating introduced with controlled intensity sharing among different diffraction orders might find wide applications in many areas of optics such as optical switches. We show that AMLPG-based radial carpet beams can be engineered in which they acquire sheet-like spokes. This feature nominates them for potential applications in light sheet microscopy. In addition, a detailed analysis of the multiplication of the diffraction pattern of an AMLPG by the 2D structure of a spatial light modulator is presented. The presented theory is confirmed by respective experiments.

摘要: Silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs) combine dense optical system integration with industrial scalability by adopting well-established CMOS fabrication processes. An electro-optic phaseshifter (EOP) represents a basic building unit of several PICs applications, including datacom optical switches, PIC-FPGAs, and beam steering. In-situ resistive-heaters in close vicinity of waveguides, or free-carrier injection/depletion in doped junctions, are common methods to build EOPs. Literature reports thermal shifters consuming 24.7 mW to achieve DC large signal π-phaseshift, power consumption of injection PIN implementations and depletion PN modulators of 10 mW and ≈ 0 mW respectively. A thermal EOP naturally avoids carrier-induced optical insertion losses (IL), in contrast to a PIN/PN modulator. Thus, thermal and PIN/PN methods trade-off IL with electrical power rather than minimizing both. An EOP of low optical losses and low electrical power is highly desired in large-signal, and low-speed applications.

Handbook of Graphene || Graphene Plasmonic: Switching Applications
摘要: This chapter focuses on the graphene plasmonic-based optical switching devices operating in the infrared to terahertz spectrum. Graphene plasmonic due to high strong light–matter interaction and nanoscale size has received significant attention in recent years, as they have found an important role in many areas of optical science and engineering by offering schemes to control electromagnetic fields. Another area of science that has been under the spotlight for the last few years relates to graphene plasmonic metasurface, which is formed of graphene layer packed into a structure. This material exhibits exceptional electronic and optical properties, intriguing many research groups across the world including us. However, our interest is specifically in studying the interaction between electromagnetic waves with surface modes of graphene in multilayer configuration (such as Otto configuration) and switching applications that might follow. In this chapter, relying on theoretical models and numerical simulations, we show that by designing and manipulating optical and electrical properties of graphene such as chemical potential, temperature, scattering rate, as well as incident beam characteristics such as beam width, one can have the structures based on graphene as a good platform for not only infrared optical switching devices but also terahertz switching devices.
