    摘要: A novel method for pedestrian counting using passive infrared (PIR) sensors is proposed and the corresponding system has been designed and developed. The inclusion of an environmental combo sensor in the proposed pedestrian counting system enabled environmental monitoring such as temperature, humidity, pressure, Carbon di Oxide (CO2) and Total Volatile Organic Component (TVOC). The detection lengths of the PIR sensors are varied by tuning the Field of View (FoV) of the Fresnel lens to differentiate the movements of humans and animals. A novel method is applied to locate the PIR sensors in the designed mould so that their coverage regions do not overlap. The sensor data are transmitted to the Thingspeak server via Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) communication protocol. The system is powered by a 6000 mAh rechargeable battery which is charged by the solar panel during day time enabling continuous data collection. The system’s results are validated against manual counting and it is seen that more than 90% accuracy can be achieved by this intelligent system.

  • Tunable plasmonically induced reflection in HRR-coupled MIM waveguide structure

    摘要: In this paper, a surface plasmon optical waveguide filter with half-ring resonator (HRR) based on the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure was designed and numerically simulated. The results show that the transmission characteristics of the structure tuned dynamically by altering the geometrical parameters. In addition, by tuning the refractive index of the filling material in the resonator, the designed waveguide structure realized a nanoscale refractive index sensor (753nm/RIU of sensitivity). Moreover, double plasmonic induced reflection (PIR) window was also achieved by adding another rectangular resonator. The as-designed structure also offers a potential method for optoelectronic devices.

    摘要: In the current era of the Internet of Things (IoT), it is a necessary condition to sense and identify the human being to integrate smartness to the living space of human beings. State-of-the-art smart living environments have the goal of being ubiquitous and pervasive with minimal obstruction to the subject. In this respect, device-free and passive technologies are getting increasingly employed. One of the most widely used passive sensors is the Pyro Infrared (PIR) sensors to sense the presence of human being in an IoTized environment. However, they are typically used for presence and immobility monitoring only. Some researchers are using PIR sensors for human speed analysis and human tracking in an indoor scenario. In this work, we investigate the possibility of using the analog signals of PIR sensors for person identification, speed and direction estimation and intruder detection in a smart home styled environment. Our experimental results indicate the feasibility of using these sensors for identification, authentication and motion analysis of human subjects, among a group of 20 individuals. In an experimental setup, devices are switched on/off according to the individual in a shared living environment. With the PIR data performance of different techniques compared. Withal, the system is tested in the authentic scenario. Results prove the efficacy of the system proposed.

  • Daily activity recognition using pyroelectric infrared sensors and reference structures

    摘要: Pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensor is widely used as motion detector, due to its sensitivity to the Infrared Radiation Changes (IRC) induced by human motion. In particular, it’s also possible to determine the human activity patterns based on the IRC signal by improving the feature-speci?c sensitivity of PIR sensors. In this paper, the feature-speci?c sensitivity is enhanced by visibility modulation at the geometric sensing layer. At the cooperative sensing layer, a novel stereo con?guration is used in developing the infrared sensing system, which aims to handle the dif?culties caused by occlusion and limited coverage area. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed system in daily activity recognition.
