  • Performance Analysis of Submerged Polycrystalline Photovoltaic Cell in Varying Water Conditions

    摘要: Exploring the underwater solar energy by solar photovoltaic (PV) cells leads to a huge advantage by utilizing the humongous space of water covered by the earth’s surface. Even though the amount of solar radiation decreases with the depth of the water, water provides sustainable cooling and cleaning for solar PV cells underwater. There are many challenges and constraints to develop solar PV cells underwater because they are mostly calibrated and amenable to space, dryland, terrestrial, etc., and the solar spectrum is prone to get narrower with the depth of the water. The implementation of solar PV cells underwater is pliable in various commercial and defense applications, such as sensors, water monitoring systems, autonomous vehicles, underwater gliders, etc. In this article, first, a mathematical model has been developed for the solar cell spectrum to incorporate the changes in the solar irradiance with the depth of the water. Furthermore, an experimental setup was designed and implemented to mimic an underwater environment. The performance of the polycrystalline encapsulated solar cell was studied based on the different types of water and the depth of the solar cell underwater. This article manifests that there is a sufficient amount of underwater solar power that can be utilized using PV cells to operate various devices and systems.

  • Material Property Changes in Defects Caused by Reverse Bias Exposure of CIGS Solar Cells

    摘要: Partial shading of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 modules can lead to the formation of reverse bias induced wormlike defects. These wormlike defects act as local shunts and permanently decrease module output. A good understanding of the formation and propagation mechanisms of these defects is needed in order to mitigate the negative effects, or to prevent these defects from forming. In this article, wormlike defects were formed on small nonencapsulated cells by exposing them to reverse bias conditions. Scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy measurements showed a rearrangement of elements: Indium, gallium, and copper were replaced by cadmium, whereas selenium was replaced by sulfur in the area around the defect. Moreover, additional electronic-defect levels were found in that area with spectrally resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Based on the material changes in the area close to the wormlike defects, a propagation mechanism is proposed. The model assumes a chemical reaction as the driving force for propagation instead of melting because of ohmic heating.

    摘要: The PV panels have become a ubiquitous renewable resource as it produces clean energy and needs less maintenance. However, in changing environmental conditions less power output is generated. The operating point shifts from the maximum power point (MPP) to some other point. The MPP Tracking (MPPT) controller is designed for the panels to track the changing irradiance and maintain operating point at MPP. The MPPT controller uses an algorithm which generates a dynamic duty ratio for the dc-dc converter. MATLAB simulation of the MPPT PV system using perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm is shown in this paper. In the simulation model, irradiance changes are considered while the temperature remains unchanged. A comparison between non-MPPT and MPPT output is analysed. The result verifies that MPPT algorithm boosts the efficiency of the system in changing climatic conditions and performs better than the non-MPPT system.
