摘要: The inevitable trend to develop 5G and beyond puts higher requirements on the intelligence of optical networks. In the operation of an optical network, many processes can take advantage of emerging technologies for effective optimization, such as resource allocation, fault operation, traffic classification and prediction and also security convincement. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a method which establishes digital logical topologies following the structure of biological neural network to reproduce its analysis and learning process. Besides, blockchain is also a secure, decentralized architecture that supports the trustworthiness of distributed communications and storage. These two technologies are considered to have great potential in optimizing the intelligent optical network in different aspects. In this paper, we will demonstrate some possible approaches of how AI and blockchain can separately be integrated with optical network to improve its performance.

摘要: We identify research and development trends of Passive Optical Network (PON) technology by performing a competitive patent landscape analysis on a global scale. We use patent landscape analysis to identify patenting activities in different areas of innovation. Looking at large sets of patent data provides a better understanding of several important innovation waves in PON development, with an emphasis on adopted ITU and IEEE standards. In this paper, we also review key PON technology segments, discuss patent filing activity in different world regions, discuss key companies and patent leaders within the PON technology.

摘要: Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexing PON (TWDM-PON) is next generation PON technology that increases the PON capacity due to having multiple wavelengths for both upstream and downstream links with tunable transceivers in the optical network units (ONUs). It is also proposed for connecting radio units to the cloud, termed as mobile front-haul, in 5G. The most important feature of TWDM PON is a dynamic wavelength assignment scheme that can efficiently handle ONU migration from one wavelength to another to balance the traffic load. In this study, the working of DWA mechanism for ITU compliant TWDM PON is presented and an adaptive DWBA scheme is presented that can dynamically handle ONU migration in case of asymmetric traffic load conditions. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated through a TWDM PON test bed implemented in OMNET++ environment. For the traffic load analysis a simple regression model is used. Overall, the ADWBA scheme reduces the average upstream delays of T2 and T3 up to 28% and of T4 up to 50% with valuable reduction in bandwidth wastage.

摘要: A Multi-Domain Awareness Routing algorithm is proposed to reduce the energy consumption in elastic optical networks. By adopting the fragmentation metrics both of the spectrum domain and spatial domain, the blocking probability of elastic optical networks can be reduced. When new services arrive, they are prioritized to work on existing links to reduce new optical paths and working network components. Then the holding time of existing services is fully considered in order to select the candidate route with a shorter working time and thus improve energy consumption. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce the network energy consumption and hence, result in lower connection blocking probability.

摘要: This paper describes an integrated system consisting of three domains (or layers): a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical domain, an Ethernet packet switching domain, and a data center compute domain. The resources across the three domains are managed by a single orchestrator software module through the use of standard interfaces based on OpenROADM, OpenFlow, and OpenStack, respectively. A demonstration consisting of OpenROADM-certified optical equipment from two vendors, OpenFlow commercial switches, and repurposed Stampede compute nodes is also reported.

摘要: Paper present a simulation of bi-directional WDM-TDM PON with upstream re-modulation based on RSOA for 64 ONUs at 60 Km reach with 5 Gb/s downstream and 2.5 Gb/s upstream bit rate. A 1:16 splitter is used as a PON element which creates communication between central office and different users. The effectiveness of this design depends on the ability of the RSOA to re-modulate the received downstream signal with the new upstream signal. This architecture is investigated for different RSOA power, downstream receiver power and extinction ratio in terms of BER. The result shows that as the RSOA input power decreases and the device operating regime becomes increasingly linear, the BER performance of the upstream signal deteriorates and that of downstream signal improves. Also it is observed that greater the extinction ratio the harder is for the RSOA to overwrite the downstream signal

New Path-Setup Method for Optical Network-on-Chip
摘要: With high bandwidth, low interference, and low power consumption, optical network-on-chip (ONoC) has emerged as a highly efficient interconnection for the future generation of multicore system on chips. In this paper, we propose a new path-setup method for ONoC to mitigate contentions, such as packets, by recycling the setup packet halfway to the destination. A new, strictly non-blocking 6 × 6 optical router is designed to support the new method. The simulation results show the new path-setup method increases the throughput by 52.03%, 41.94%, and 36.47% under uniform, hotspot-I, and hotspot-II traffic patterns, respectively. The end-to-end delay performance is also improved.

VCSEL-based differential modulation technique for high-speed gigabit passive optical networks
摘要: With the convergence towards 5G, optical networks need to be upgraded to support the emerging data tsunami. This work experimentally demonstrates the first real-time transmission of 20 Gbps over a class 10G 1550 nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) in the context of on-off-keying (OOK) modulation format, by employing VCSEL differential drive mode technique, for adoption in high-speed gigabit passive optical networks (GPONs). Two OOK data streams each with 10 Gbps are differentially modulated onto a single VCSEL, therefore generating an aggregated data rate of 20 Gbps OOK signal. A receiver sensitivity of -13.36 dBm is experimentally achieved. Through extinction ratio optimization, an error free transmission over 24.7 km single mode fibre is attained, with a transmission penalty of 1.91 dB. Our proposed technique alleviates band-limitation of the VCSEL carrier, and doubles the channel data rate without replacing the transmitter optics.

Remote Optical Frequency Up-converter based on Optoelectronic Oscillator
摘要: A remote optical frequency up-converter utilizing an electro-absorption modulator based optoelectronic oscillator (EAM-OEO) for radio-over-fiber (RoF) application is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The proposed remote optical frequency up-converter has no data leakage from optical baseband signal and no phase noise degradation stemming from optical baseband data leakage because the optical baseband signal is optically isolated from the OEO feedback loop by an optical band pass filter. Compared with the conventional remote optical frequency up-converter based on an EAM-OEO, the proposed system shows improved phase noise characteristics and receiver sensitivity.
