    摘要: The hypertriglyceridemic waist (HW) phenotype is strongly associated with type 2 diabetes; however, to date, no study has assessed the predictive power of phenotypes based on individual anthropometric measurements and triglyceride (TG) levels. The aims of the present study were to assess the association between the HW phenotype and type 2 diabetes in Korean adults and to evaluate the predictive power of various phenotypes consisting of combinations of individual anthropometric measurements and TG levels. Between November 2006 and August 2013, 11 937 subjects participated in this retrospective cross-sectional study. We measured fasting plasma glucose and TG levels and performed anthropometric measurements. We employed binary logistic regression (LR) to examine statistically significant differences between normal subjects and those with type 2 diabetes using HW and individual anthropometric measurements. For more reliable prediction results, two machine learning algorithms, naive Bayes (NB) and LR, were used to evaluate the predictive power of various phenotypes. All prediction experiments were performed using a tenfold cross validation method. Among all of the variables, the presence of HW was most strongly associated with type 2 diabetes (p < 0.001, adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 2.07 [95% CI, 1.72–2.49] in men; p < 0.001, adjusted OR = 2.09 [1.79–2.45] in women). When comparing waist circumference (WC) and TG levels as components of the HW phenotype, the association between WC and type 2 diabetes was greater than the association between TG and type 2 diabetes. The phenotypes tended to have higher predictive power in women than in men. Among the phenotypes, the best predictors of type 2 diabetes were waist-to-hip ratio + TG in men (AUC by NB = 0.653, AUC by LR = 0.661) and rib-to-hip ratio + TG in women (AUC by NB = 0.73, AUC by LR = 0.735). Although the presence of HW demonstrated the strongest association with type 2 diabetes, the predictive power of the combined measurements of the actual WC and TG values may not be the best manner of predicting type 2 diabetes. Our findings may provide clinical information concerning the development of clinical decision support systems for the initial screening of type 2 diabetes.

    摘要: A novel one-port probe technique, which combines the measurements of a rectangular waveguide and coaxial probe to nondestructively yield the permittivity and permeability of a PEC-backed material, is presented. A brief description of the derivation of the theoretical probe reflection coefficients, necessary for permittivity and permeability extraction via numerical inversion, is provided. Experimental characterization results of a PEC-backed magnetic material are presented to validate the proposed approach. Error analysis is also undertaken to quantify the new technique’s sensitivity to common experimental errors.

    摘要: Detection of defects in induction machine rotor bars for disassembled motors are required to evaluate machines considered for repair as well as fulfilling incremental quality assurance checks in the manufacture of new machines. Detection of rotor bar defects prior to motor assembly are critical in increasing repair efficiency and assuring the quality of newly manufactured machines. Many methods of detecting rotor bar defects in unassembled motors lack the sensitivity to find both major and minor defects in both cast and fabricated rotors along with additional deficiencies in quantifiable test results and arc-flash safety hazards. A process of direct magnetic field analysis can examine measurements from induced currents in a rotor separated from its stator yielding a high-resolution fingerprint of a rotor’s magnetic field. This process identifies both major and minor rotor bar defects in a repeatable and quantifiable manner appropriate for numerical evaluation without arc-flash safety hazards.

    摘要: For long-wavelength space-based radars, such as the P-band radar on the recently selected European Space Agency BIOMASS mission, system distortions (crosstalk and channel imbalance), Faraday rotation, and system noise all combine to degrade the measurements. A first-order analysis of these effects on the measurements of the polarimetric scattering matrix is used to derive differentiable expressions for the errors in the polarimetric backscattering coefficients in the presence of Faraday rotation. Both the amplitudes and phases of the distortion terms are shown to be important in determining the errors and their maximum values. Exact simulations confirm the accuracy and predictions of the first-order analysis. Under an assumed power-law relation between σhv and the biomass, the system distortions and noise are converted into biomass estimation errors, and it is shown that the magnitude of the deviation of the channel imbalance from unity must be 4–5 dB less than the crosstalk, or it will dominate the error in the biomass. For uncalibrated data and midrange values of biomass, the crosstalk must be less than ?24 dB if the maximum possible error in the biomass is to be within 20% of its true value. A less stringent condition applies if the amplitudes and phases of the distortion terms are considered random since errors near the maximum possible are very unlikely. For lower values of the biomass, the noise becomes increasingly important because the σhv signal-to-noise ratio is smaller.

  • The Chicago Water Isotope Spectrometer (ChiWIS-lab): A tunable diode laser spectrometer for chamber-based measurements of water vapor isotopic evolution during cirrus formation

    摘要: We describe a new tunable diode laser (TDL) absorption instrument, the Chicago Water Isotope Spectrometer, designed for measurements of vapor-phase water isotopologues in conditions characteristic of the upper troposphere [190–235 K temperature and 2–500 parts per million volume (ppmv) water vapor]. The instrument is primarily targeted for measuring the evolving ratio of HDO/H2O during experiments in the “Aerosol Interaction and Dynamics in the Atmosphere” (AIDA) cloud chamber. The spectrometer scans absorption lines of both H2O and HDO near the 2.64 μm wavelength in a single current sweep, increasing the accuracy of isotopic ratio measurements. At AIDA, the instrument is configured with a 256-m path length White cell for in situ measurements, and effective sensitivity can be augmented by enhancing the HDO content of chamber water vapor by an order of magnitude. The instrument has participated to date in the 2012–2013 IsoCloud campaigns studying isotopic partitioning during the formation of cirrus clouds and in the AquaVIT-II instrument intercomparison campaign. Realized precisions for 1-s measurements during these campaigns were 22 ppbv for H2O and 16 ppbv for HDO, equivalent to relative precisions of less than 0.5% for each species at 8 ppmv water vapor. The 1-s precision of the [HDO]/[H2O] ratio measurement ranged from 1.6‰ to 5.6‰ over the range of experimental conditions. H2O measurements showed agreement with calculated saturation vapor pressure to within 1% in conditions of sublimating ice and agreement with other AIDA instruments (the AIDA SP-APicT reference TDL instrument and an MBW 373LX chilled mirror hygrometer) to within 2.5% and 3.8%, respectively, over conditions suitable for all instruments (temperatures from 204 K to 234 K and H2O content equivalent to 15–700 ppmv at 200 hPa).

  • The role of plasmonic excitations in the optical activity of periodic structures with configurational chirality

    摘要: Broken mirror symmetry of chiral structures imposes a lack of mirror symmetry in the scattering pro?le. When an energy dissipation channel is introduced in the system, an overall optical activity arises. Plasmonic nanostructures, therefore, are an ideal platform to induce optical activity by means of constitutional or con?gurational chirality. We experimentally investigate the mechanism of plasmonically induced con?gurational chirality in a periodic monoclinic hole array with a broken mirror symmetry. The resulting optical activity of the structure is studied by using k-space leakage radiation measurements.

  • Extraction of uncertain parameters of a single-diode model for a photovoltaic panel using lightning attachment procedure optimization

    摘要: The aim of this work is to improve the estimation of parameters of solar photovoltaic models. An approach based on lightning attachment procedure optimization, which takes into account the uncertainties of measurements, is proposed. The approach includes three steps: the extraction of the parameters in a conventional manner, the determination of the partial uncertainties of all the parameters, and finally the determination of the instantaneous parameters based on the results of the first two steps. To validate the proposed theoretical developments, the approach is applied to four different photovoltaic parameter estimation problems. The results obtained are compared with those given by well-established algorithms to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method, revealing that the proposed method exhibits very effective performance with a root-mean-square error on the order of 1 × 10?17, compared with 1 × 10?4 for existing literature methods.

    摘要: Channel electron multiplier (CEM) and microchannel plate (MCP) detectors are routinely used in space instrumentation for measurement of space plasmas. Our goal is to understand the relative sensitivities of these detectors to penetrating radiation in space, which can generate background counts and shorten detector lifetime. We use keV -rays as a proxy for penetrating radiation such as -rays, cosmic rays, and high-energy electrons and protons that are ubiquitous in the space environment. We ?nd that MCP detectors are times more sensitive to keV -rays than CEM detectors. This is attributed to the larger total area of multiplication channels in an MCP detector that is sensitive to electronic excitation and ionization resulting from the interaction of penetrating radiation with the detector material. In contrast to the CEM detector, whose quantum ef?ciency keV -rays is found to be 0.00175 and largely independent of detector bias, the quantum ef?ciency of the MCP detector is strongly dependent on the detector bias, with a power law index of 5.5. Background counts in MCP detectors from penetrating radiation can be reduced using MCP geometries with higher pitch and smaller channel diameter.

    摘要: In the 5G system, we foresee the use of LOS-dominated mm-wave radio links to moving users being subject to slow fading resulting from the users’ random locations and orientations. We refer to this as a random-LOS channel. MIMO processing algorithms will be used in 5G to improve performance in slow fading, similar to how they are used in Rayleigh fading. To this end, we study the probability of detection in the random-LOS channel when there are dual-polarized antennas on both sides of the link. We introduce two polarization de?ciencies: the polarization non-orthogonality and the amplitude imbalance between the ports of a two-port antenna. The MIMO ef?ciency is evaluated as a function of these de?ciencies. In the analysis, we consider the MRC algorithm for one bitstream, and the ZF and SVD algorithms for two bitstreams. We also present two analytical formulas for the MIMO ef?ciency that can be used to determine performance. We use the formulas on two ideally orthogonal dipoles, and show by means of coverage plots how much the 1- and 2-bitstream performances degrade due to the polarization de?ciencies in off-boresight directions.

  • On the imprecisions that may be induced when applying the Blaugrund approximation for the analysis of Doppler-shift attenuation lifetime measurements

    摘要: It is shown that the Blaugrund approximation could have led to some imprecise lifetime determinations in the past which used the Doppler-shift attenuation method (DSAM). Comparison with Monte Carlo simulations of the slowing-down process show that there is not an easy way to judge using them on the reliability of old data.
