    摘要: A compact unidirectional radiated microstrip RFID tag antenna is proposed and investigated in this paper. The λ/5 rectangular microstrip antenna is adopted to achieve compact size and unidirectional radiated performance. Slots are utilized to reduce the size of antenna and increase the directivity. The antenna can achieve 8+50j impedance and unidirectional radiation at the frequency of 868MHz, which is suitable for RFID applications above water or metal.

  • Low-cost, Inkjet-printed UHF RFID Tag based System for Internet of Things Applications using Characteristic Modes

    摘要: The radio frequency identification (RFID) has emerged Internet of things (IoT) into the identification of things. This paper presents, a low-cost smart refrigerator system for future internet of things applications. The proposed smart refrigerator is used for automatic billing and restoring of beverage metallic cans. The metallic cans can be restored by generating a product shortage alert message to a nearby retailer. To design a low-cost and low-profile tag antenna for metallic items is very challenging, especially when mass production is required for item-level tagging. Therefore, a novel ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) tag antenna is designed for metallic cans by exploiting the metallic structure as the main radiator. Applying Characteristics mode analysis (CMA), we observed that some characteristic modes associated with the metallic structure could be exploited to radiate more effectively by placing a suitable inductive load. Moreover, a low cost, printed (using conductive ink) small loop integrated with meandered dipole used as an inductive load, which was also connected with RFID chip. The 3-dB bandwidth of the proposed tag covers the whole UHF band ranging from 860 - 960 MHz when embedded with metal cans. The measured read range of the RFID tag is more than 2.5 meters in all directions to check the robustness of the proposed solution. To prove the concept, a case study was performed by placing the tagged metallic cans inside a refrigerator for automatic billing, 97.5 % tags are read and billed successfully. This study paves the way for tagging metallic bodies for tracking applications in domains ranging from consumer devices to infotainment solutions, which enlightens a vital aspect for the Internet of Things (IoT).

  • SRR LOADED COMPACT UHF RFID TAG FOR BROADBAND OPERATION

    摘要: An SRR loaded compact RFID tag for broadband operation over the UHF RFID band is presented. The tag antenna structure is composed of a dipole whose arms are symmetrically loaded with square split ring resonators (SRRs) along a short circuited strip between the SRRs. The antenna is made inductive and reduced in overall size by the SRR sections. The measured read range characteristics of the proposed RFID tag with an RFID chip Alien Higgs-3 are presented. The proposed tag operates over the entire UHF RFID band about a maximum read range of 7 meters in the entire elevation angular ranges and over wide azimuthal angular ranges.

    摘要: Wireless sensing is a state-of-the-art technology of acquiring information about a remote object and its characteristics without bringing into physical contact with it. Humans have various sensory systems, viz., vision, hear, and smell to observe the object from the remote in day-to-day life. The data from the surrounding can be acquired by means of acoustic waves, distribution of forces, and electromagnetic energy. The collected data can be analyzed to obtain useful information about the object and its characteristics. Swift progress in the micro-electronics has resulted in faster response and accurate mode of signal detection. Keeping the technological progress in mind, this article discusses the fundamentals aspects and reviews the state of the artwork on wireless detection technology.

  • Designing Antennas for RFID Sensors in Monitoring Parameters of Photovoltaic Panels

    摘要: The importance of the radio-frequency identi?cation (RFID) technology and photovoltaic (PV) systems has been growing systematically in the modern world full of intelligent products connected to the Internet. Monitoring parameters of green energy plants is a crucial issue for e?cient conversion of solar radiation, and cheap RFID transponders/sensors can be involved in this process to provide better performance of module supervision in scattered installations. Since many components of PV panels disturb the radio-wave propagation, research in the antenna scope has to be carried out to reach the proposed fusion. The problem with RFID transponders being detuned in close proximity to glass or metal surfaces can be solved on the basis of solutions known from the scienti?c literature. The authors went further, revealing a new antenna construction that can be fabricated straight on a cover glass of the PV panels. To achieve the established task, they incorporated advantages from the latest advancements in materials technology and low-power electronics and from the progress in understanding radio-wave propagation phenomena. The numerical model of the antenna was elaborated in the Hyper Lynx 3D EM software environment, and test samples were fabricated on the technology line of ML System Company. The convergence of calculated and measured antenna parameters con?rms the design correctness. Thus, the studied antenna can be used to elaborate the cheap semipassive RFID transponders/sensors in the PV panel production lines.

    摘要: Up to date energy-aware radio frequency identification (RFID) anticollision protocols are mainly focused on RFID systems using active tags. The introduction of RFID in portable devices, and the increasing popularity of passive tags, demands low energy-consumption anticollision protocols in environments with passive tags. Memoryless protocols present the simplest tag hardware that is beneficial for a low energy consumption. However, the excessive collisions required by these protocols increases the energy consumption, wasting a large number of tag transmitting bits. In this paper, a window procedure is presented to manage the length of the tags’ bit-stream in order to limit the energy wastage in collisions. The bit window is applied to two memoryless anticollision protocols, the query tree protocol (QT) and the collision tree protocol (CT), producing the query window tree protocol (QwT) and the collision window tree protocol (CwT). Simulations show that the use of this window yields significant reductions in energy consumption and identification time. In addition, QwT and CwT are compared to state of the art memoryless protocols to confirm that CwT is an outstanding candidate for reducing energy consumption. Also, the results obtained show how the bit window procedure increases energy savings as the length of the tag ID increases.

    摘要: We fabricate carbon-based stretchable antennas for passive UHF RFID tags. The tag antennas are created on a stretchable elastic band by brush-painting. In addition to wireless evaluation of the fabricated RFID tags before and after cyclic stretching, the properties of the novel carbon-based antenna material are studied. The wireless performance of the established RFID tags is compared to similar stretchable silver-based RFID tags. Based on the achieved results, the established carbon-based tag antennas do not perform in the same high level as the silver-based tag antennas but their read ranges of around 2 to 2.4 meters are suitable for versatile textile-integrated RFID applications. Stretching causes permanent decrease to the tag read range but they remain functional even after 100 stretching cycles. These preliminary results are very promising, considering the current trend towards more environmentally friendly and cost-effective materials in electronics.

  • A novel power-on-reset circuit for passive UHF RFID tag chip

    摘要: A novel power-on-reset (POR) circuit with simple architecture, small values of capacitances, ultra-lower power consumption, and self-adjustable delay time of reset pulse for passive UHF RFID tags is presented in this paper. A proposed delay element was adopted for the features of small capacitances and wide power supply rise time range. An inverter was used as a two-inputs logic device to simplify the architecture of the circuit. The technology used for design and simulation is SMIC 0.18 μm RF. Simulation results show that the circuit functions well under different process corners with different power supply rise time, and is able to generate a POR signal after the power supply is briefly powered off. The static power consumption is less than 30 pA. Moreover, the circuit operates properly along with other modules of analog front-end.

    摘要: The 3D printed passive radio frequency identification (RFID) tags with integrated components on flexible polyimide is fabricated. The RF antenna and chip interconnection are printed with a silver nanoparticle based conductive ink. The antenna was optimized to match with resonance frequency of RFID chip as 910 MHz. And components and an RFID chip are mounted and soldered. Selected RFID chip contains electronic product code (EPC) and built-in temperature sensor, which allows temperature sensing ability as well as multiple identification.

    摘要: Recently, structural health monitoring (SHM) using radio frequency identification (RFID) tag antenna-based sensing (TABS) has received increasing attention because of its wireless, passive, and low-cost characteristics. However, a great challenge in the SHM using RFID TABS is multiple influences in the measurement. This paper presents an ultrahigh frequency RFID sensor system for corrosion detection and characterization. In this paper, a 3-D antenna sensor is designed to work on the surface of a protective coated steel sample. Sweep-frequency measurements are applied for analog identifier with principal component analysis (PCA) to overcome the multiple influences from reader-tag orientation, distance, and environment. Feature extraction and selection though PCA can get robust and sensitive defect information by projecting the test data into an orthogonal feature space. The test results demonstrate that the proposed method can be applied to detect and characterize early-stage corrosion in metals.
