  • Robust Design of Digital Circuits on Foil || Design Case: RFID Tags

    摘要: In this chapter, we have presented the designs and technology evolutions that will allow thin-film electronics on plastic foil to fulfill the required specifications for EPC item-level tagging. In particular, we have shown that many of these specifications can be met. A 64-bit organic RFID tag has been elaborated; it is inductively coupled at a base carrier frequency of 13.56 MHz. The complexity of the chip has been increased to a 128-bit transponder chip. Also a basic ALOHA anti-collision protocol and WORM memory have been integrated. EPC-based data rates of 50 kb/s have been reached by downscaling of the technology. These data rates could also be met by using high-performing metal-oxide transistors or by the integration of diode-load or complementary logic. Recently, we demonstrated the possibility for plastic RFID tags to implement a bi-directional communication to realize an anti-collision protocol.

    摘要: An innovative reading procedure based on the Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar technique aimed at improving the reliability of chipless RFID tags wireless detection is presented. More in detail, the considered scenario comprises a moving tagged item travelling along a known path. The detection scheme relies on the integration of multiple received signals and benefits from the information on the background echo, which is intrinsic to the procedure. This technique greatly enhances the detection probability in complex scenarios subject to a high level of clutter. An equivalent model for the detection procedure of chipless tags in a noisy environment is presented. Successful experimental tests of tag readings with low Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) are illustrated.

    摘要: The paper presents an analysis and fabrication of two wearable textile-based UHF patch antennas with H-shaped slot for RFID applications. Both prototypes are fabricated by embroidering conductive yarn into denim textile. The two antennas differ in embroidered grid density. Performance of the designed and fabricated textile antennas have been evaluated in terms of the antenna gain, input impedance and radiation patterns. The RFID chip was integrated with the antennas and read-range was tested.

    摘要: A display frame ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) reader antenna design is proposed for museums in this paper. Given its conformal design, the antenna can seamlessly hide and blend with the museum environment. RFID asset tracking, personnel tracking and anti-theft surveillance, can be accomplished without altering the display artifacts or disturbing the aesthetics of the museum. The series fed patch antenna array, arranged in a circular fashion makes the RFID tag detection viable in any orientation at the near zone. At far-field distances, the antenna can detect tags up to 6 meters. The antenna has a bandwidth of 28 MHz and is designed for Region-2 RFID frequencies. It uses an unconventional substrate that is lightweight, non-toxic, chemically resistant and self-extinguishing if exposed to fire. More than one frame antennas can be operated using multi-port RFID readers to realize a distributed antenna system within the museum.

  • UHF Reader Antenna for Near and Far-Field RFID Operation

    摘要: In order to detect the RFID tags kept inside an enclosure, the reader antenna can couple energy into another antenna kept in the near-field region. To detect the tags placed in the far-field, the reader antenna should have a good gain. Usually, these two requirements compete with each other due to the effect of coupling on the frequency of operation of the antenna system. In this work modification to a loop antenna is proposed such that it can operate in both near and far-field. Loop antenna with high impedance surface (HIS) reflector results in a low-profile antenna pair where both the antennas can interchangeably operate in near-field and far-field, with their operating frequency band independent of the spacing between the antennas. The performance of the proposed antennas is compared with that of several other antennas by measuring the read range of RFID tags. It is found that the proposed antennas perform better in comparison with the other antennas when detecting the tags placed inside an enclosure. When operating as a far-field antenna, their performance is very close to that of a conventional RFID reader antenna which is optimized only for far-field operation.
