Dental Imaging With Near-Infrared Transillumination Using Random Fiber Laser
摘要: Contrary to the conventional detection method like radiography, the near infrared light source has been demonstrated to be suitable for dental imaging due to different reflectivity among enamel, dentin, and caries lesion. In this paper, three light sources with different bandwidths based on a transillumination method are compared. The contrast among enamel, dentin, and caries lesion is calculated in different situations. The experimental results show that the random fiber laser has the best comprehensive quality in dental imaging due to its high spectral density, low coherence, and deep penetration. This work provides a guidance for light source selection in dental imaging.

摘要: A tunable erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser assisted by a random fiber grating introduced by an fs-laser and a tunable fiber Bragg grating is demonstrated. The tuning range is up to 4.45 nm(1548.04 -1552.49 nm). Due to the half-opened laser cavity design and the efficient gain from the pumped EDF, the measured threshold pump power is 18 mW, and the slope efficiency is up to 13.2%.

摘要: The effect of ytterbium-doped fiber on the output spectrum of a random fiber laser is analyzed and discussed in this paper. The experimental results show that putting ytterbium-doped fiber in the random fiber laser’s cavity is beneficial for the generation of high-order Stokes. A near-infrared supercontinuum with 20dB bandwidth of more than 500nm can be generated, which proved that a random laser fiber not only can works as a traditional random fiber laser, but also can be a novel, simple, low cost, low coherence, and robust near-infrared supercontinuum generation method.

摘要: The size or depth of the dental caries could be underestimated by conventional dental caries detection method, this paper, backscattering tooth imaging method based on near infrared random fiber laser has been investigated. We demonstrate that the random fiber laser is ideally suitable for dental caries diagnosis owing to its near infrared wavelength, high spectral density and low coherence.

摘要: We report in this communication the coexistence phenomenon relating two of the most challenging behaviors of complex systems: turbulence and spin glass. In 1998, Bohr, Jensen and Paladin [1] conjectured that it would be possible to find a connection between them, although they pointed out that “it could be too early to decide whether it can pave the way to a deeper understanding of intermittency in fully developed turbulence”. Both effects have been widely studied in a diversity of physical systems, including photonic ones, particularly in the field of random lasers and random fiber lasers [2,3]. However, it was only recently that the coexistence of turbulence-like and spin-glass behavior was identified in any experimental system, once again in a photonics system based on a random fiber laser (RFL) [4]. The experimental results were theoretically supported by a newly proposed photonic Pearson coefficient, with which the experimental results could be well fitted to describe both the turbulent and the glassy behavior in the RFL.

摘要: The output performance of an incoherently pumped random fiber laser (RFL) dependence on the pump bandwidth has been investigated. This work could provide a new pumping scheme for the high power RFLs. relatively broad pump bandwidth can also help suppress the spectral broadening while maintaining an ultra-high spectral purity. The results reveal that the increment of pump bandwidth can affect the gain characteristics, nonlinear effects and eventually the output performance. This work could provide a new pumping scheme for the high power RFLs.

摘要: An optically controllable Er/Yb co-doped random fiber laser with a random multi-phase shifted fiber Bragg grating pumped by a 980 nm laser is proposed. We used a 980 nm laser diode to laterally pump an Er/Yb co-doped fiber with a random multi-phase shifted fiber Bragg grating. Through changing lateral pump location, control of laser outputs was achieved. As a result, outputs of one or two main laser peaks were obtained by changing the locations of the Er/Yb co-doped fiber being laterally pumped.

Optical Amplifiers - A Few Different Dimensions || Raman Fiber Laser–Based Amplification in Telecommunications
摘要: The chapter demonstrates a detailed study of Raman fiber laser (RFL)-based amplification techniques and their applications in long-haul/unrepeatered coherent transmission systems. RFL-based amplification techniques are investigated from signal/noise power distributions, relative intensity noise (RIN), and fiber laser mode structures. RFL-based amplification techniques can be divided into two categories according to the fiber laser generation mechanism: cavity Raman fiber laser with two fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and random distributed feedback (DFB) Raman fiber laser using one FBG. In addition, in cavity fiber laser–based amplification, reducing the reflectivity near the input helps mitigate the signal RIN, thanks to the reduced efficiency of the Stokes shift from the second-order pump. To evaluate the transmission performance, different RFL-based amplifiers were optimized in long-haul coherent transmission systems. Cavity fiber laser–based amplifier introduces >4.15 dB Q factor penalty, because the signal RIN is transferred from the second-order pump. However, random DFB fiber laser–based amplifier prevents the RIN transfer and therefore enables bidirectional second-order pumping, which gives the longest transmission distance up to 7915 km. In addition, using random DFB laser-based amplification achieves the distance of >350 km single mode fiber in unrepeatered DP-QPSK transmission.

摘要: In this paper, we presented a monolithic high power random fiber laser with a tandem-pumping scheme. The random fiber laser seed centered at 1064 nm was pumped by a 1018 nm fiber laser and reached an output power of 8.66 W. After the two amplifiers, the seed was amplified to 4020 W and the 3 dB width of laser spectrum was broadened from 0.78 nm to 0.99 nm. To increase the efficiency of the 4 kW laser, a specially designed high absorption coefficient (0.6 dB/m @ 1018nm) 30/250 μm Yb doped fiber and high brightness 1018 nm pump laser were adopted. The optical-to-optical efficiency could reach as high as 88.5%. No obvious mode instability was found during the experiment. Furthermore, with the same amplifier stage, we have also built another 4 kW level fiber laser seeded by an oscillator consisting of a pair of fiber Bragg gratings. The comparison of the experimental results showed that high power laser based on RFL seed would have a better control on spectral broadening.
