摘要: This paper presents a signi?cant change in current electric power grid response and recovery schemes by developing a framework for proactive recovery of electric power assets with the primary objective of resiliency enhancement. Within the proposed framework, which can potentially present the next generation decision-making tool for proactive recovery, several coordinated models will be developed including: 1) the outage models to indicate the impact of hurricanes on power system components; 2) a stochastic pre-hurricane crew mobilization model for managing resources before the event; and 3) a deterministic post-hurricane recovery model for managing resources after the event. Proposed models will be extended to ensure applicability to a variety of electric power grids with different technologies and regulatory issues. The theoretical and practical implications of the developed models will push the research frontier of proactive response and recovery schemes in electric power grids, while its ?exibility will support application to a variety of infrastructures, in response to a wide range of extreme weather events and natural disasters.

摘要: Hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), and emphasized the importance of electric grid resiliency. Increased integration of photovoltaics (PV) and other distributed energy resources (DERs) such as storage represent an opportunity to reduce dependency on fossil fuel deliveries and distribution networks with single points of failure, and to increase energy resiliency through local generation and storage of power. However, there are technical challenges including voltage fluctuations and balancing load and generation which must be addressed when integrating PV. In this paper, we provide background on the USVI electric system, discuss the opportunity for PV, and present some technical analysis related to PV integration.

摘要: Failure prediction based on the anomaly detection/forecasting is becoming a reality thanks to the introduction of machine learning techniques. The orchestration layer can leverage on this new feature to proactively reconfigure cloud services that might find themselves traversing an element that is about to fail. As a result, the number of cloud service interruptions can be reduced with beneficial effects in terms of cloud service availability. Based on the above intuition, this paper presents an orchestration strategy for optical cloud networks able to reconfigure vulnerable cloud services (i.e., the ones that would be disrupted if a predicted failure happens) before an actual failure takes place. Simulation results demonstrate that, with a single link failure scenario, proactive restoration can lead to up to 97% less cloud services having to be relocated. This result brings considerable benefits in terms of cloud service availability, especially in low load conditions. It is also shown that these improvements come with almost no increase in the cloud service blocking probability performance, i.e., resource efficiency is not impacted.
