  • Terahertz Active Metamaterials Based on Stacked Closed-Ring Resonator Arrays

    摘要: Metamaterials, which can show novel optical functionalities beyond conventional optics, has been actively studied in recent years. As one of approaches to add tunability on resonant characteristics of metamaterials, slightly shifting relative position of stacked metamaterials or metasurfaces has been reported. In this study, based on numerical simulation we have designed stacked closed-ring resonator (CRR) arrays that show relatively large spectral shift with a small lateral shift of the stacked layers in terahertz (THz) range. We also show that changing dielectric constant of the dielectric media between CRR arrays is also effective to obtain large spectral shift of the resonant responses. Our findings may be utilized to develop novel type of THz active devices and also sensing devices.

    摘要: We demonstrate optical tuning in hybrid barium titanate-silicon photonic structures. Individual resonances of a multi-ring resonator are coalesced into a single resonance. Critically, device operation is stable in time. Our devices enable adjustable wavelength filters and offer a low power solution to compensate fabrication imperfections.

  • Metal-insulator-metal nano square ring resonator for gas sensing applications

    摘要: In this paper, three designs of Square Ring resonator (SRR) based on metal-insulator-metal (MIM) WG are reported. The transmission spectra and electric field distribution of the sensor structure are simulated using finite element method (FEM). The effect of structural parameters on the spectral characteristics and sensing performance are investigated comprehensively. The maximum achieved sensitivity and figure of merit of the sensor reached 1320 nm/RIU and 16.7, respectively. Due to the high performance and easy fabrication, this kind of plasmonic structures can find noteworthy applications in integrated optical circuits and on-chip nano-sensors.

  • Optical temperature sensor with micro ring resonator and graphene to reach high sensitivity

    摘要: In this paper, micro temperature sensor with micro ring resonator and graphene material has been investigated. The main idea is to control the temperature of system by the layer of graphene on micro ring resonator path. By rising the temperature of the system, graphene with 5000 W/mK thermal conductivity senses this increase and applies it in sensor resonance peaks. The linear temperature difference causes a linear difference in sensitivity, power, and energy level, which shows the correct functioning of the system. Electronic sensors suffer from electrical disturbances and electromagnetic interference and sometimes do not function properly, therefore this micrometer optical sensor with 44×40 μm dimensions is necessary in industrial and medical fields because it has small dimension, high finesse and sensitivity, low weight and cost in comparison with other sensors. Other materials of this sensor are Si and SiO2 which are natural elements and have a high melting point. The FSR and FWHM of system are 660 GHZ and 30 GHZ which are acceptable values in comparison with other optical sensors. The time rotation and time delay unit reaching to 0.31 ps and 1.51 ps in accordance which have an acceptable time and also total length of ring is 94 μm.

  • A metamaterials-loaded quarter mode SIW microfluidic sensor for microliter liquid characterization

    摘要: In this paper, a two concentric complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs) loaded quarter mode substrate integrated waveguide (QMSIW) is proposed as a compact microfluidic chemical sensor for liquid characterization, demonstrated by the measurement of distilled (DI) water and ethanol liquid mixtures. The proposed sensor can detect the liquid concentration from the resonance frequency shift caused by the liquid sample flowing inside the microfluidic channel engraved on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Its electrical size is only ?0.25λg. The simulated resonant frequency shifts between DI water and 100% ethanol is 1196 MHz (from 2.620 GHz to 3.816 GHz), while less than 6 μL samples are used. The experimental results have validated the possibility of the application of the proposed microfluidic structure as a chemical sensor.

  • Demonstration of photonic micro-ring resonator based digital bit magnitude comparator

    摘要: This paper details the novel design, simulation and analysis of the digital photonic single-bit magnitude comparator with the utilization of silicon micro-ring resonator as its core component. The micro-ring resonator uses electro-optic carrier injection modulation properties with its ring waveguide being structured in PIN diode. Five micro-ring resonators are used in the proposed design, with each corresponds to the specific logic mode operation. This work also presents the time varying simulation, where two predetermined 1-bit input stream is injected into the circuit at the data rate of 1 Gbps, where its output is observed via oscilloscope, where results are obtained at the sampling rate of 1.6 THz. The timing diagram for the entire simulation is also shown together with additional results obtained from the simulation.

    摘要: Silicon photonics is continuing to develop for an increasing number of applications including data centers, miniaturized sensors and atomic clocks. The development involved the creation of the technology platform, design of innovative devices and developing models and methods for fabrication tolerance assessment. In our work, we suggest a novel structure for silicon photonic coupled-ring-resonator with an order of scale difference in the rings’ lengths and sensitivity analysis for this structure. The design consists of a long racetrack resonator of length 472.6 μm (sub-millimeter scale) nested by ring resonator of radius 25 μm. This radius was chosen to minimize bending losses. The coupling ratio of the directional couplers is designed to be 97/3. The suggested structure is fabricated by the IMEC fabrication facility which is using DUV lithography and silicon etching ePIXfab. The analysis shows that this structure can achieve higher finesse than the typical values of the conventional structure, even with reasonable fabrication tolerance. Experimentally a finesse of about 25 and a quality factor of about 17,000 is achieved. The proposed structure can improve the performance of optical sensing and filtering.

  • Digital electro-optic full adder design and simulation

    摘要: This paper demonstrates the circuit design of an electro-optic full adder based on silicon micro-ring resonator as its core component. The ring resonator design incorporates the carrier-injection forward-biased PIN waveguide structure for its logical operation. This work also provides the working principle of the designed full adder. It also proceeds with the demonstration and analysis of the operation with two digital input bits information together with a Carry-In (CIN) bit input injected at 1 Gbps, and the output generated as SUM output as well as Carry-Out (COUT) both at the same data rate generated. The performance of the proposed circuit design is verified by clear output timing waveforms, following the sequence of the digital full adder logic table.

    摘要: Defected ground structure (DGS) is frequently involved to improve the characteristic response of microwave devices. In this paper, investigation of DGS utilization for characteristic enhancement of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) bandpass filter (BPF) composed of complimentary-split-ring-resonator (CSRR) is presented. The filter is deployed on an FR4 epoxy dielectric substrate with the thickness of 1.6 mm and the dimension of 45 mm × 40 mm. The BPF which is designed by two reversely arranged CSRR incorporated on the SIW conductor surface provides passband extension at higher frequency producing the bandwidth response around 9 GHz. However, the use of CSRR also provides some unsatisfactory response at high frequency region requiring for the enhancement. By involving DGS into the BPF, the characteristic response at high frequency region could be enhanced with the bandwidth response achieves up to 10% improved.

  • Device performance of standard strip, slot and hybrid plasmonic ??-ring resonator: a comparative study

    摘要: In this paper, we presented three μ-ring resonator structures based on the standard strip, slot and hybrid plasmonic waveguides based on the SOI platform. A standard strip waveguide is formed by depositing a silicon core on a silica substrate. Whereas the slot waveguide is tailored by keeping a narrow air gap between two silicon strip waveguides. Finally, the hybrid plasmonic waveguide is composed of Metal-Air-Silicon structure, where the E-field is significantly enhanced in the narrow air gap. The ring radius is kept at 1.5 μm for the three designs. The transmission spectrum and E-field distribution of these structures are simulated using the finite element method (FEM). Silicon strip waveguide-based ring resonators are easy to fabricate but their sensitivity is quite low as compared to the other two designs. μ-ring resonator based on hybrid plasmonic waveguide shows the best sensitivity of 333.3 nm/RIU. While, slot waveguide based μ-ring resonator showed the best performance in the quality factor, the figure of merits and limit of detection. We believe that this comparative study will facilitate the researchers to choose the suitable waveguide design for ring resonators depending on their preferred application and fabrication technology available.
