  • Dual-action Platinum(II) Schiff Base Complexes: Photocytotoxicity and Cellular Imaging

    摘要: Nine photo-stable Pt(II) Schiff base complexes [Pt(O^N^N^O)] (Pt1-Pt9) containing tetradentate salicylaldimine chelating ligands have been synthesized and characterized as potential photosensitisers for photodynamic therapy (PDT). The effects of electron-withdrawing versus electron-donating substituents on their electronic spectral properties are investigated. Pt1-Pt9 show broad absorption bands between 400-600 nm, which makes them useful for green-light photodynamic therapy. The complexes showed intense phosphorescence with emission maxima at ca. 625 nm. This emission was used to track their cellular localization in cancer cells. Confocal cellular imaging showed that the complexes localized mostly in the cytoplasm. In the dark, the complexes were non-toxic to A549 human lung cancer cells, but exhibited high photo-toxicity upon low-dose green light (520 nm, 7.02 J/cm2) irradiation via photo-induced singlet oxygen generation. Thus, these photoactive Pt(II) complexes have the potential to overcome the problem of drug resistance and side effects of current clinical Pt(II) drugs, and to act as both theranostic as well as therapeutic agents.

  • A colorimetric, ultraviolet absorption and fluorescence three-signal probe based on bis-carbazole for Al3+ detection and the application in cell imaging

    摘要: A novel Schiff-base, [9-(2-Chloro-ethyl)-9H-carbazol-3-yl-methylene]-(9-ethyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)-amine (CECA) was designed and synthesized, which was highly selective and sensitive for the detection of Al3+ by colorimetric, ultraviolet absorption and fluorescence three-signal methods. The detection limit was evaluated to be as low as 74 nmol/L for the ultraviolet absorption method and 19 nmol/L for fluorometric method. These three methods could determine qualitatively and quantitatively the concentrations of Al3+ and been used in different conditions. The mechanism was explored that the double bond (C=N) of CECA was broken to form the carbazole aldehyde and carbazole amine complex accompanied by fluorescence enhancement by the Job's plot, 1H NMR, the electrospray ionization mass spectra (EI-MS) and fluorescence methods. More significantly, the fluorescence imaging showed that CECA could detect Al3+ in living cells.

  • Synthesis, characterization, optical and electrochemical band gaps of green poly(azomethine-ester)s containing oxalyl and succinyl units

    摘要: A new series of poly(azomethine-ester)s (PAZ-E)s with different (turning ortho, meta and para) positions were synthesized by condensation polymerization. The chemical structure of polymers was veri?ed by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FTIR and UV–Vis measurements. Electrochemical characteristics of the corresponding polymers were obtained with cyclic voltammetric (CV) analysis. Thermal characteristics of the obtained polymers were analysed by TG-DTA, DMA and DSC measurements. The ?rst degradation temperature values of PAZ-E compounds were found between 198 and 250?C from TGA measurements. Photophysical characteristics of the obtained polymers were explained with photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Molecular weight distributions of (PAZ-E)s were obtained by gel permeation chromatographic (GPC) analysis. Two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) properties and images of the synthesized (PAZ-E)s were analysed by SEM and AFM surface analysis techniques, respectively. Electrochemical band gap (E g) values of (PAZ-E)s P-9, P-10, P-11, P-12, P-13 and P-14 were calculated as 2.58, 2.14, 1.90, 2.06, 1.89 and 1.69 eV, respectively. The E g values of the (PAZ-E)s were found to be quite low.

  • Studies on optical, electrical, mechanical and theoretical investigation of 4-nitro-benzoic acid (3-ethoxy-2-hydroxy-benzylidene)-hydrazide: A novel Schiff base organic NLO material

    摘要: New organic non-centrosymmetric Schiff base material 4-Nitro-benzoic acid (3-ethoxy-2-hydroxy-benzylidene)-hydrazide was synthesized and grown as single crystal by slow evaporation solution growth technique. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals the noncentrosymmetric nature of the grown crystal with space group Pna21. The nonlinear efficiency of the grown material was studied by Kurtz-Perry powder technique and found to be 0.7 times that of KDP. The photoluminescence emission of the grown crystal shows emission at 360 nm. The mechanical stability of the crystal was examined by Vicker’s microhardness study and the yield strength of the material was calculated. Low dielectric constant at higher frequencies was observed from dielectric measurements. Reduction in charge carriers when the sample was illuminated by halogen lamp proves the negative photoconductivity of the sample. In addition, quantum chemical calculations were carried out using density functional theory for the NEH molecule optimized at B3LYP/6-31+G (d, p) basis set to calculate its frontier molecular orbital, Electrostatic potential and Mulliken charge analysis.

  • Fluorescein derived Schiff base as fluorimetric zinc (II) sensor via ‘turn on’ response and its application in live cell imaging

    摘要: A novel Schiff base L composed of fluorescein hydrazine and a phenol functionalized moiety has been designed and prepared via cost-effective condensation reaction, which is utilized for selective sensing of Zn2+ over other environmental and biological relevant metal ions in aqueous alcoholic solution under physiological pH range. The binding of Zn2+ to the receptor L is found to causes ~23 fold fluorescence enhancement of L. The 1:1 binding mode of the metal complex is established by combined UV–Vis, fluorescence, and HRMS (high-resolution mass spectroscopy) spectroscopic methods. The binding constant (Ka) for complexation and the limit of detection (LOD) of Zn2+ is calculated to be 2.86×104 M-1 and 1.59 μM, respectively. Further photophysical investigations including steady-state, time-resolved fluorescence analysis and spectral investigations including NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), IR (infrared spectroscopy) suggest introduction of CHEF (chelation enhance fluorescence) with the suppression of C=N isomerization and PET (photo-induced electron transfer) mechanism for the strong fluorescent response towards Zn2+. Finally, the sensor L is successfully employed to monitor a real-time detection of Zn2+ by means of TLC (thin layer chromatography) based paper strip. The L is used in the cell imaging study using African green monkey kidney cells (Vero cells) for the determination of exogenous Zn2+ by Immunofluorescence Assay (IFA) process.

  • Synthesis Characterization, Crystal Structure, and Fluorescence of a New Samarium Schiff Base Complex

    摘要: A new samarium Schiff base complex with the formula [SmIII(NO3)3(H2O)L2]?EtOH, where L = {(E)-2-(((4-(ethoxycarbonyl)phenyl)iminio)-methyl)phenolate}, is determined by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). The complex crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with the following unit cell dimensions: a = 14.1304(19) ?, b = 18.0218(13) ?, and c = 31.246(2) ?. Photoluminescence characteristics of the complex are investigated experimentally in the solid state and obtained theoretically using the Sparkle/PM7 modeling. Moreover, several methods such as powder XRD, FT-IR and UV-Visible spectroscopy are utilized to confirm the structure of the complex.

  • Synthesis and spectral analysis of fluorescent probes for Ce4+ and OCl? ions based on fluorescein Schiff base with amino or hydrazine structure: Application in actual water samples and biological imaging

    摘要: Two Schiff base fluorescein probes (FDA, FDH) based on fluorescein-aldehyde and nitroaniline derivatives were synthesized. The effects of amino and hydrazine substituents in fluorescein backbones were examined via fluorescence and absorbance spectra. In the presence of Ce4+, the fluorescence of FDA was quenched due to the ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT). Hypochloric acid can react with the C=N bond, and blocking the photo induced electron transfer (PET) of FDH leads to enhancement of the fluorescence. FDA showed detection limits for Ce4+ and OCl? as low as 63 nM in concentration range of 0 – 4 μM. FDH showed detection limits for OCl? as low as 0.8 μM in concentration rang 0 – 100 μM. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane containing the probes were prepared for the real-time qualitative detection of Ce4+ and OCl? in real water samples. The probes were successfully applied to biological imaging in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and are expected to find applications in biosensing.

  • Schiff base rare earth metal complexes: Studies on functional, optical and thermal properties and assessment of antibacterial activity

    摘要: We used the condensation chemistry with anthracene 9 carbaldehyde and 3,4 diaminopyridine to form Schiff base (SB) ligand, N2,N3 bis (anthracen 9 ylmethylene) pyridine 3,4 diamine incorporating Er, Pr and Yb rare earth metals to form a series of SB complexes. Surface, structure, thermal, and optical properties of the resulting complexes were investigated using a variety of tools. The characteristic luminescence properties were observed after rare earth metal inclusions in SB. Antibacterial studies were performed against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in terms of zone of inhibition for SB complexes. The SB-Pr complexes showed better immune behavior against all the pathogens than the other SB metal complexes.

  • Synthesis and Spectroscopic Investigations of Schiff Bases Transition Metal Complexes of Copper(II), Cobalt(II) and Nickel(II)

    摘要: This work presents an experimental and theoretical study on complexes of copper(II), cobalt(II) and nickel(II) with Schiff base ligand 3-propyl-(N-o-toluidine)quinazoline semicarbazone (PTQS). The spectroscopic properties of the complexes have been investigated by IR and electronic spectra. The molecular geometry of the complexes have been proposed on the basis of elemental analyses, molar mass and magnetic susceptibility. It is suggested that the ligand PTQS acts in a bidentate manner and coordination proposes with azomethine N and carbonyl oxygen atom of semicarbazone moiety. The remaining coordination sites are occupied by negative ions such as Cl?, Br?, I?, NO3? and ClO4?. The geometry of complexes was assigned to be octahedral.

  • Blue-emitting Photostable Hybrid Films for High-efficiency Large-area Light Converter and Photonic Applications

    摘要: A blue fluorophore of Schiff base zinc complex is prepared by a hydrolysis-free solution-based synthetic method. Under UV excitation, the complex produces blue emission with a quantum yield (Q) of 42.6% in methylene chloride and 24.0% in standalone powder form. Quantum mechanical calculations show that the blue emission is generated by the change in the chemical state of the ligand associated with the complexation with Zn cations. Thin films of Zn complexes incorporated in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) polymers are also prepared by dispersing the complexes into the polymer matrices. These hybrid polymer films exhibit several notable features, particularly enhanced luminescence efficiency (with maximum Q of 85.8% for PMMA and 30.0% for CAB) and scalability for fabrication over a large area while retaining the original properties of the host polymers. Light-emitting diodes are also fabricated using the CAB hybrid thin films, and they show a Q of 43.2% with excellent photostability. The complex and its hybrid films demonstrate their great potential for such applications as UV-to-blue conversion devices in photoelectronics, solar-cell concentrators, solid-state lighting and display, and green-house agriculture.
