  • Adaptive Decentralized Control of Residential Storage in PV-Rich MV-LV Networks

    摘要: The rapid adoption of residential-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems in low voltage (LV) networks combined with the falling prices of residential-scale battery energy storage (BES) systems is paving the way for a future in which customers could locally supply most of their energy needs. However, off-the-shelf (OTS) storage systems operate for the sole benefit of the customer (reducing grid imports). This means that charging might not occur during times of high PV generation, resulting in technical issues on LV and medium voltage (MV) networks. This work proposes an adaptive decentralized control strategy for residential-scale BES systems to reduce voltage and thermal issues whilst still benefiting customers. With this strategy, the power charging and discharging rates constantly adapt throughout the day based on clear-sky irradiance, PV generation, demand, and state of charge; significantly reducing reverse power flows and ensuring adequate storage capacity the next morning. A real Australian MV feeder with realistically modelled LV networks is studied using smart meter data. Results demonstrate that the proposed control strategy overcomes the limitations of the OTS BES. It is also shown it can be as effective as an ideal optimization-based approach, being able to manage all technical issues without significantly affecting customers.

  • Impacts of Array Orientation and Tilt Angles for Photovoltaic Self-Sufficiency and Self-Consumption Indices in Olive Mills in Spain

    摘要: Olive mills are extensive in the Mediterranean Basin, and Spain constitutes approximately 45% of global production. The industrial sector faces a new energetic paradigm where distributed generation provided by small renewable energy sources may reduce the dependence from fossil energy sources as well as avoid energy distribution losses. Photovoltaic self-consumption systems can play an important role in confronting this challenge due to their modularity and their decreasing cost. Most of self-sufficiency energy studies are focused on building sector and discussions about the idiosyncrasy of industrial load profiles, and their matching capability with photovoltaic generation profiles can be scarcely found. This work analyzes the potential of photovoltaic self-consumption systems as a function of the array power, array tilt, and orientation angles to face the electric consumption in olive mills. Different recording intervals and reporting periods are considered. Results show that a self-sufficiency index of 40% may be achieved on olive harvest basis. Moreover, due to the load profile particularities, percentage error lower than 1.6% has been found when considering a recording interval of 60 min when matching the olive load consumption and photovoltaic generation profiles. Chosen array tilt and orientation angles may be key parameters to maximize the self-sufficiency index.

  • Can a city reach energy self-sufficiency by means of rooftop photovoltaics? Case study from Poland

    摘要: The process of decarbonising economies has to take place on a multiple levels. One of the objectives is to ensure renewables-based energy self-sufficiency of cities. Cities have become home to the majority of the world’s population, and at the same time contribute enormously to environmental pollution. Considering the above, the purposes of this paper are threefold: to formulate a methodology for estimating rooftop photovoltaics (PV) potential in urban areas based on detailed Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) data; to calculate the spatial variability of load and photovoltaics energy supply, and thus to distinguish zones with various levels of energy self-sufficiency; and finally, to scrutinise the economic and environmental aspects of such a solution in given conditions. Wroc?aw, the capital city of the Lower Silesia voivodeship (NUTS 2 administrative division) in south-west Poland (Central Europe), was selected as a case study. The city has a population of close to 650,000 and an annual electricity consumption slightly exceeding 2.2 TWh. Industry constitutes 46% of that demand, and households 31%. The results show that up to 850 MW of rooftop PV can be installed in the city, which has the potential to reduce the electrical energy related emissions by almost 30% and simultaneously to increase the city’s energy self-sufficiency. Although energy storage, in the form of batteries, slightly improves both the autarky and environmental indices, the relation between potential PV generation and load makes them very infrequently useful (mostly in summer) and not economically justified.
