  • Mesh-Structure-Enabled Programmable Multi-Task Photonic Signal Processor on a Silicon Chip

    摘要: Photonic integrated circuits (PIC) have recently attracted extensive attention in advanced photonic signal processing to meet the ever-increasing demands on high-speed and ultra-compact data signal management. However, programmable and multi-task photonic signal processing is still full of challenges, especially the scalable photonic integration solution. Here, we design, fabricate and demonstrate a mesh-structure-enabled programmable multi-task photonic signal processor on a silicon chip. It relies on a scalable 2D mesh structure network with a number of hexagonal unit cells formed by building blocks of tunable Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs). We study several simple and complex optical filtering functions using configured single ring resonator, cascaded ring resonators, ring assisted MZI, cascaded MZIs, reconfigurable and tunable comb filter and (de)interleaver, and dual-injection ring resonators. For the proof-of-concept demonstration of on-chip programmable multi-task photonic signal processing, a monolithically integrated silicon chip with four hexagonal unit cells is fabricated with greatly reduced geometric dimension. By appropriately adjusting the thermo-optic phase shifters of MZIs, versatile programmable multi-task photonic signal processing functions are demonstrated in the experiment with impressive performance, including single ring resonator, cascaded ring resonators, asymmetric MZI, ring assisted MZI, optical delay line, multi-port router, N×N optical switch, and optical neural network (ONN) enabled self-configurable router and switch and their practical applications in fiber-optic communication systems. The demonstrations may open up new perspectives for on-chip solutions to ultra-compact, reconfigurable, programmable and multi-functional data signal management in advanced optical communication networks.

  • Broadband Cognitive Radio Enabled by Photonics

    摘要: Cognitive radio is considered as a possible disruptive force to improve the spectral resource efficiency through sensing and interacting with the environment. Traditional electrical technologies to implement the cognitive radio face challenges in terms of bandwidth, resolution, and speed. In this paper, the concept and architecture of broadband cognitive radio systems enabled by photonics are proposed. Key microwave photonic techniques for the architecture are reviewed, including the photonics-based spectrum sensing, the photonic arbitrary waveform generation, the photonics-based self-interference cancellation processing, and the microwave photonic dechirp processing and radar imaging. A preliminary demonstration of a cognitive radar system enabled by photonics is performed. The future possible research directions on this topic are discussed.

  • Mechanism of the Laser Flash Photolysis of Rydimeric e-Tautomers of 4-N,N-Diethylaminoazobenzene in a 2-Propanol Medium

    摘要: Difference transit absorption spectra (TASes) obtained via flash photolysis of isopropanol solutions of 4-N,N-diethylaminoazobenzene (DEAB) using 15 ns laser pulses at wavelengths of λex = 265 and 353 nm are analyzed. The inconsistency of constructing the mechanism of trans (t) → cis (c) photisomerization of DEAB based on the concept of this dye having a monomeric structure is shown. Based on the rydimeric concept of aminoazobenzene dyes, which include Rydberg dimers DEAB2, an adequate explanation is given of the nature of TAS signals with structures that change dramatically when in wavelength λex is altered. TAS signals of DEAB2 are compared to ultrahigh-speed (subpico- and pico-second) TAS signals of rydimers of a reference aminoazobenzene (AAB2) dye. It is established that the main difference between the structures of DEAB2 TAS signals generated by pulses with indicated wavelengths λex is due to the excitation of various rydimeric e-tautomers. In addition, a rydimeric e-tautomer that is unstable in the ground state acquires increased stability in propanol and, by absorbing radiation with λex = 353 nm, alters the structure of one of its monomers to quinoid while remaining a rydimer. It is shown that when excited with radiation pulses at λex = 265 nm, a rydimeric e-tautomer (which is more stable in the ground state) dissociates into individual monomers, one of which isomerizes to form cis-DEAB molecules.

  • Higha??temperature droplet epitaxy of symmetric GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots

    摘要: We introduce a high–temperature droplet epitaxy procedure, based on the control of the arsenization dynamics of nanoscale droplets of liquid Ga on GaAs(111)A surfaces. The use of high temperatures for the self-assembly of droplet epitaxy quantum dots solves major issues related to material defects, introduced during the droplet epitaxy fabrication process, which limited its use for single and entangled photon sources for quantum photonics applications. We identify the region in the parameter space which allows quantum dots to self–assemble with the desired emission wavelength and highly symmetric shape while maintaining a high optical quality. The role of the growth parameters during the droplet arsenization is discussed and modeled.

  • Demonstration of scalable microring weight bank control for large-scale photonic integrated circuits

    摘要: Microring resonators (MRRs) are reconfigurable optical elements ubiquitous in photonic integrated circuits. Owing to its high sensitivity, MRR control is very challenging, especially in large-scale optical systems. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate continuous, multi-channel control of MRR weight banks using simple calibration procedures. A record-high accuracy and precision are achieved for all the controlled MRRs with negligible inter-channel crosstalk. Our approach allows accurate transmission calibration without the need for direct access to the output of the microring weight bank and without the need to lay out electrical and optical I/Os specific for calibration purpose. These features mean that our MRR control approach can be applied to large-scale photonic integrated circuits while maintaining its accuracy with manageable cost of chip area and I/O complexity.

  • Polariton condensation in photonic crystals with high molecular orientation

    摘要: We study Frenkel exciton-polariton Bose–Einstein condensation in a two-dimensional defect-free triangular photonic crystal with an organic semiconductor active medium containing bound excitons with dipole moments oriented perpendicular to the layers. We ?nd photonic Bloch modes of the structure and consider their strong coupling regime with the excitonic component. Using the Gross– Pitaevskii equation for exciton polaritons and the Boltzmann equation for the external exciton reservoir, we demonstrate the formation of condensate at the points in reciprocal space where photon group velocity equals zero. Further, we demonstrate condensation at non-zero momentum states for transverse magnetic-polarized photons in the case of a system with incoherent pumping, and show that the condensation threshold varies for different points in the reciprocal space, controlled by detuning.

  • Experimental evaluation of silicon photonics transceiver operating at 120°C for 5G antenna array systems

    摘要: The use of optical transceivers in antenna array system applications requires reliable operation at high temperature. The experimental characterisation of a silicon photonics transceiver operating in a harsh environment with temperatures up to 120°C is presented and discussed. The transceiver was placed inside a climatic chamber and it was fed by an external depolarised light source. The bit error rate was measured, and the impacts on transmission performances were analysed and discussed, including reliability aspects. The authors believe that silicon photonics transceivers with an optimised design and with improvements in the optical connector and fibre adhesive technology are suitable for this kind of applications.

  • Silicon High-order Mode (De)Multiplexer on Single Polarization

    摘要: Mode-division multiplexing on an integrated photonic chip is critical for future optical networks. High-order mode multiplexing is desired to increase the transmission capacity. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a silicon on-chip high-order mode (de)multiplexer using subwavelength grating (SWG) structure, which supports 11-mode (de)multiplexing on a TE-polarized light (TE0 ~ TE10). The proposed mode (de)multiplexer comprises three directional couplers and seven SWG-based directional couplers. Measurement results show that all the 11 channels have low crosstalk values (?15.4 dB ~ ?26.4 dB) and low insertion losses (0.1 dB ~ 2.6 dB) at 1545 nm. To the best of our knowledge, our device achieves the highest-order-mode (de)multiplexing on a silicon photonic chip.
