    摘要: In recent years, conventional energy sources are depleting and getting exhausted. In replacement of this, solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems are used because of its free availability, renewability and less operating cost. But the constraints such as low ef?ciency, dependability on weather conditions are overcome by using maximum power point tracking(MPPT) algorithms and ef?cient converters to produce the maximum power output. MATLAB/Simulink is used to model and analyze PV array, MPPT algorithms, and converters. In this paper, recent research developments in PV array, various MPPT techniques, many ef?cient Converters are presented. This paper will give an overall idea about the present research trends in the ?eld of Solar Photovoltaic systems.

  • Complementary relationship between small-hydropower and increasing penetration of solar photovoltaics: Evidence from CAISO

    摘要: To achieve the 100% green electricity goal, we need to understand the relationship between resources in the market and identify the flexible clean resources (i.e., hydropower) to integrate power from wind and photovoltaic (PV). This paper reveals a complementary relationship between small hydropower plants and solar PVs in the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) based on the system-wide hourly generation data from 2013 to 2017. When the solar PV increases its portion in the generation mix by 1%, small hydro will increase its portion by 0.01-0.06%. Such response is obvious in the net demand peak hours, both morning and evening. The low operation cost, flexibility, and dispatchability of small hydro in CAISO explain this complementarity. Due to its benefit in emission and low Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE), it is suggested to consider more small hydro projects to accommodate additional PV capacity for the 100% green electricity goal. Our estimation indicates that the current feasible potential of small hydro is sufficient, if the relation stays the same over years. If developers can mitigate the environmental impact, more technical potential will become feasible. Thus, small hydro could integrate more solar PV and reduce the demand for natural gas plants and batteries.

  • Decentralized Optimal Control of a Microgrid with Solar PV, BESS and Thermostatically Controlled Loads

    摘要: Constructing microgrids with renewable energy systems could be one feasible solution to increase the penetration of renewable energy. With proper control of the battery energy storage system (BESS) and thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) in such microgrids, the variable and intermittent energy can be smoothed and utilized without the interference of the main power grid. In this paper, a decentralized control strategy for a microgrid consisting of a distributed generator (DG), a battery energy storage system, a solar photovoltaic (PV) system and thermostatically controlled loads is proposed. The control objective is to maintain the desired temperature in local buildings at a minimum cost. Decentralized control algorithm involving variable structure controller and dynamic programming is used to determine suitable control inputs of the distributed generator and the battery energy storage system. The model predictive control approach is utilized for long-term operation with predicted data on solar power and outdoor temperature updated at each control step.

  • Combined ecological and economic benefits of the solar photovoltaic industry in arid sandy ecosystems

    摘要: Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and the vegetation under them consist of a combined system that could provide not only clean electrical power but also an effective preventive measure against wind erosion in sandy ecosystems. Here, by evaluating the effectiveness of the two-tier model, this study focused on the socioeconomic and environmental co-benefits of the solar PV industry in sandy ecosystems. The results showed that the ecosystem services provided by the combined system land were 24 times higher than those provide by natural recovering land. The combined system could achieve $5258.86 (cid:1) 104 in benefits per year, including $3897.48 (cid:1) 104 from electricity and $1361.38 (cid:1) 104 from ecosystem services value. The ecosystem services value could reach 34.93% of the electricity benefits value and become a vital part of the total valuation. The results indicated that electricity benefits and considerable ecosystem value could be generated from the combined systems. These combined systems have great potential for combating desertification and should be considered appropriate public investment projects with high economic and social rates of return in arid areas.

  • Characterization of form-stable phase-change material for solar photovoltaic cooling

    摘要: Solar PV panel cooling is essential to achieve maximum efficiency of PV modules. Phase-change material (PCM) is one of the prominent options to cool the panel and reduce the temperature, since PCMs have low thermal conductivity. Expanded graphite particles are used to enrich the structure and stability as well as to increase the thermal properties. In the present research work, polyethylene glycol (PEG) 1000 is used as a base material and expanded graphite for inclusive particle. A novel form-stable PEG1000/EG composite PCM mixture is prepared, using impregnation and dispersion method. Expanded graphite and PEG1000/EG sample phase compositions are investigated, using X-ray diffraction technique. No new peak is identified in the composite PCM sample. The surface morphology and structure of EG and PEG1000/EG are investigated, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Chemical stability analysis is done by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Thermal properties of the prepared composite PCMs are analysed by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and KD2 pro analyser. Results show that addition of EG in various propositions (5%, 10% and 15%) enhances the thermal conductivity of PCM samples from 0.3654 to 1.7866 W mK?1, while melting point and latent heat of fusion of PCM samples are getting reduced. TGA thermographs are used to investigate the thermal stability of the composite PCM samples. TGA curves show that loss of mass happens above the operating temperature, and it is varied with different mass ratios of EG. Characterization of the prepared composite PCM samples is compared and found that PEG1000-85%/EG-15% is the best form-stable PCM, suitable for cooling the solar PV panel as well as to improve the electrical efficiency coupled with a decrease of temperature in the range of 35 °C to 40 °C.

    摘要: This paper presents the design and implementation of a multiplier Single-Ended Primary-Inductor Converter (SEPIC) for a Power-Hardware-in-the-Loop (Power HIL) emulator of a PV system. The emulation system has been developed in a dSPACE 1104, allowing to exchange the data from a voltage variable power supply and the SEPIC converter in order to extract the maximum power from a solar panel. This methodology is intended for the evaluation of supervision strategies using a Power Hardware-in-the-Loop approach. The proposed project would offer laboratory studies closer to the collection of raw data in a fieldwork, thus facilitating the development of new technologies by obtaining faster and more comfortable results.

  • Airport-based photovoltaic applications

    摘要: Nowadays, airports' interest in solar photovoltaics (PVs) is increasing. It is a way to lower the burden of energy costs and to show environmental stewardship. This paper aims to study the application of PVs in the airport environment. Solar projects in airport areas across the world were studied to find the techno-economic and environmental aspects of airport-based solar PV application. The favorable factors for solar PV are observed to be effective land utilization, low height profile, versatility, flexibility, and mature silicon PV technology. The major considerations for airport-based solar PV applications were glare occurrence, radar interference, and penetration into airspace. Airport's weather and soil conditions, selection of PV technology, glare impact, site selection, and grid interconnection issues were the technical challenges. It was observed that economic factors such as reduced energy cost, life cycle cost, and sustainability grants and incentives make solar projects in airports attractive. Carbon mitigation and achievement of sustainability goals through solar PV installation emphasized the environmental stewardship of airports. From case studies, it was understood that prior planning, glare assessment, and careful implementation are essential for the success of airport-based solar PV farms. Airport-based solar PV has immense scope in the near future.

    摘要: These days multilevel inverters are more popular for grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems due to their low cost and high efficiency, as they effectively reduce total harmonic distortion (THD) and electromagnetic interference which results leakage current. Traditional multi-level inverters can only inject real power that cannot provide quality output power. A new international standard VDE-AR-N4105 states that for a grid tied inverter of power rating below 3.68kVA, a power factor (PF) of 0.95 leading to 0.95 lagging should be achieved. So, in this paper the proposed five-level inverter topology for grid-tie PV is controlled using a reactive power control method that ensures higher efficiency while enhancing the stability of the system. The proposed closed loop reactive power control technique additionally provides the ability to inject reactive power into the system. In this proposed topology the reactive power flow standard of operation is explained in details in relation to the proposed multi-level inverter topology. To validate the accuracy of the theoretical analysis, the control technique was applied to the existing multi-level inverter topology and then has been simulated in MATLAB/Simulink software. Comparisons were done on the basis of using and not using PLL for the existing multilevel topology and it is found that, synchronization is achieved with current and voltage if PLL is used, as a result PF is maintained close to unity whereas without PLL the PF decreases. Moreover the five-level output provides a much better output and better PF then other existing topologies.

  • Grid-Assisted Rooftop Solar PV System: A Step toward Green Medina, KSA

    摘要: The increasing demands of fossil fuels and its depleting resources are a major concern all over the world. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the electrical energy is produced mainly by petroleum products. This is not only increasing the carbon footprint and pollution levels, but also depleting the natural resources faster. Therefore, there is a need for the use of renewable energy sources. Considering the high levels of solar radiation, solar-powered systems are potentially the best suited for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The techno-economics of a grid-assisted solar powered water pumping systems is presented for two different cases using HOMER software. This paper presents two case studies for the city of Medina KSA for rooftop solar PV panels. For the purpose of reduction of load on the electrical grid, a grid-assisted solar PV system is proposed in the paper. By using this system, a considerable amount of pollution mitigation is also achieved for the city of Medina.
